The Hillary Clinton I Know

I am back from the Democratic convention, and beyond all the socializing and speeches, it made me reflective about these weird, wild, but truly historic times. Those of us who are part of the progressive movement should understand that we are living in a moment of unique opportunity, if only we choose to seize it.

One of the on-going dynamics this year at the convention was the presence of so many passionate Bernie people. Some of them were involved in various kinds of protests, fueled in part by their understandable anger over the wikileaks email release that forced Debbie Wasserman Schultz to resign. But most of them were doing the regular delegate thing of participating in the life of the convention, and it was so good to see them there. As a long time progressive movement organizer, I was truly delighted to see people at a Democratic convention who looked and talked like the kinds of grassroots lefties I have seen at a hundred rallies and Netroots Nation kind of events. The angst that a lot of movement people have over Hillary Clinton, though, reminded me that I need to write something I haven’t yet written in this election cycle: why I am genuinely excited about a Hillary Clinton presidency.

A lot of progressive folks think of Hillary as the establishment, and associate her with Bill Clinton initiatives such as NAFTA and the repeal of Glass-Steagall, even though she had little involvement in those issues. That association led many people to support Bernie, and- especially as the primary’s intensity racheted up- to be suspicious of Hillary in every way. Most Bernie people will, sooner or later, follow his lead in supporting Hillary, mainly because Trump is so awful. But I want to make a strong argument that this election is important not just because Donald Trump is such a terrible man. We progressives have a lot of reasons to get genuinely excited, first of all because the bigger prospects in this election: if we get fired up and show genuine enthusiasm, if we build the movement and engage with progressive voters, we can turn this into a wave election. A big turnout of people of color, young people, unmarried women, and other progressive segments of the electorate could mean that we sweep this nasty Republican Congress out of power, and that we start to take back from the far right conservatives local officials up and down the ballot.

Beyond building such a wave, though, I also want my progressive friends to understand that Hillary Clinton is not the caricature that either the right wing attack machine or some progressive critics think she is. There is more you need to know about the Hillary Clinton I got to know in the 1990s.

A little background on me. I came out of progressive movement organizing starting when I was in high school. I was involved in student organizing, cut my teeth with an Alinsky style coalition of community organizations, and did environmental and labor organizing. In the last couple of decades I have worked or consulted for, helped start, or otherwise been involved with a wide variety of progressive organizations and issue coalitions. I have been a proud died in the wool lefty organizer for almost 40 years. But because I moved to Iowa in the 1980s, I also got to know a lot of the people who do presidential politics, and after Bill Clinton won the primary fight in 1992, I was convinced to join his campaign to help out in organizing progressives. After Clinton won that election, I was the Constituencies Director in the transition, and then became a Special Assistant to the President, where again my main focus was engaging with the progressive world, mostly on budget and economic issues and the health care fight. I got to know Hillary Clinton very well in those years, and I think a lot of my progressive allies would be surprised by the stories I am about to tell you.

Hillary Clinton gets a lot of blame for the Clinton era policies progressives don’t like, but what people don’t understand is that she was the leading advocate for progressive policies in Bill Clinton’s administration. As the main person working with progressive groups to push things in a more progressive direction, Hillary was the one I would go to help me fight those battles, and she consistently went to bat for me. One of the earliest examples: in an early budget meeting in 1993, Bob Rubin was pushing hard for lowering the deficit, and at one point he suggested we cut back on the increase we had laid out in the campaign for the Earned Income Tax Credit for the working poor. I spoke up at the meeting in opposition to Rubin, but I knew that in a battle of me vs. Rubin, I had no chance, so I went to Hillary, and she immediately got fully engaged. We quickly won that fight. That pattern played out again and again over the time I was in the Clinton White House: whenever I was in a pitched battle with more conservative people in the administration, Hillary was my ally in making our proposed legislation better. Even on issues she wasn’t working on much at all because she was so focused on health care reform and other budget issues, she had my back. For example on NAFTA, she supported me when I tried to get the US Trade Rep’s office to at least listen to progressives who had concerns about NAFTA.

On health care reform, she was a fierce advocate for a more progressive bill than a lot of the DLC types wanted to pass. Very early in the process, our chief lobbyist told her we should dramatically scale back the bill because it would be too tough to pass, and- her voice rising- she said “there are children in America dying every day because they don’t have health care, and you want me to back down because we think this will be hard? It is our job to fight for those dying kids, don’t tell me to give up before we even make the fight.” At another point, we were in a meeting talking through some policy ideas being pushed by business lobbyists and some inside the administration, and she just said flatly “these guys want the HMOs to have the power to run everything. That is ridiculous, they are not getting their way.” She fought off efforts by the health care industry to get us to strip out the provision of our bill that gave the states full freedom to pursue the single payer option, and she insisted that our bill make businesses carry more of the load for health care than individuals.

Hillary fought for that bill until the very end. I remember organizing a big meeting for progressive leaders close to the end, and I have never seen her fighting spirit better, as she rallied advocates to keep fighting the good fight. When the bill finally died, she immediately started talking to Teddy Kennedy and other congressional leaders about what we could do to at least get children covered, and the eventual result was the CHIP program, which today covers 8 million kids.

Another thing I loved about Hillary was the way she mentored and empowered progressive women and women of color. Her Chief of Staff, Maggie Williams, is an African-American woman who had come out of the Children’s Defense Fund. Her Deputy COS, Melanne Verveer, had come out of People For the American Way. Her scheduler (and later 2008 campaign manager), Patti Solis, was a feisty young Latina. Her eventual COS at the State Dept, Cheryl Mills, is African-American. Two great young women of color, Huma Abedin (still on her staff) and Neera Tanden (now President of the Center for American Progress, a leading progressive think tank) started out as very young women in her office, and she saw their potential and mentored them into the powerhouses they now become. Hillary’s office was a dynamic place in the Clinton administration, where many of the most progressive people and ideas found their champion.

Hillary is also a really good human being. Chelsea’s amazing speech last night reminded of one time when I was with Hillary in the residence when Chelsea, who was at that awkward middle school age when most kids and parents can barely stand each other, came into the room. They both looked so happy to see each other, such genuine love and affection. When her staffers would have babies and bring them to work, she would sweep them into her arms with joy. She would always take time out of her totally crazy schedule to spend a few minutes with a staff person’s parents or other family or friends who came to town, and when people she knew would get sick, Hillary would always call to check in on them.

I have so many other stories I could tell about the Hillary Clinton that I know would surprise my progressive allies, but I just want to say this: I know that us progressive movement folks won’t agree with Hillary Clinton on every issue when she becomes president. There will be plenty of powerful big business interests, as well as those in Congress that she has to work every day with, pushing her to support the usual pro-corporate policies. There will be plenty of conservative defense industry types and generals wanting her to be more aggressive militarily. We will have to work our hearts out after she is elected to influence her, her appointees, and the House and Senate to do the right thing. But this election is in no way the lesser of two evils. Yes, it is important to beat Trump, and we should never lose sight of that imperative. But progressives should also understand that it is equally important to elect Hillary president because we will have a genuine chance to get a lot of good things done in a Hilary Clinton presidency. The Hillary I know has deep progressive values and a big heart. She will work with us on a lot of issues, and will move our direction if we organize effectively even when she starts out in a place we don’t like initially.

This election is a choice between the most openly bigoted man to run for president since the early 1900s and a woman who has genuinely fought on behalf of progressive values her entire life. With our enthusiastic support, we could help her create a wave election that will decimate Trumpism for a long time to come, and give our ideas a genuine chance to become policy. We need to get to work.

10 Reasons You’re Stuck In A Life You Don’t Want To Be Living

Everyone says they want to live a great life, have healthy relationships and look and feel their best, but how many are willing to put in the work day-after-day? If you look around your life and listen to all of the whining you’ll soon find that most people are situated comfortably in their discomfort. If you are trying to break free but not sure why life isn’t moving forward, you may need to do a bit of an assessment.

Read on for 10 reasons you’re not happy with your life (and what to do about it).

1 | You complain about the same thing over and over (and over).

Here’s a rule: If you have complained about something three times, you need to accept it or change it yourself. Whether it’s your frustration with your weight, relationship or the way your colleague treats you, complaining should be taken as more than simply a momentary release of frustration; it’s a warning sign than you’re rejecting something in your life. Non-acceptance takes up a lot of energy and creates an internal and external toxic environment. If you have shared your unhappiness with someone and they have not worked with you to make things better, it means you need to make decisions that will help you get back to a place of peace. They may not be easy initially, but most of the time, we are not at the mercy of situations or other people unless we choose to be. We all have options.

2 | You tie yourself to people who bring you down.

Loyalty is something all healthy relationships need to have, but it can work against us when we confuse it with being a good person, love or even habit. Being loyal to someone who does not reciprocate, holds you back from progressing or who is participating in situations that go against our value system is truly one of the most self-destructive things we can do. It’s OK to assess your relationships and let go of the ones that no longer fit who you are. The idea that every relationship has to last “for life” is a fantasy. Most will not and that is OK.

3 | You get caught up in stupid crap

Getting stuck on the little hooks of life will not only hold you back, it will irritate you and tear you apart. Does it really matter if the friend of a friend didn’t “like” your new job status or some acquaintance from college disagrees with your stance on breastfeeding? Do you really care what your neighbor thinks about your not having kids? Remember that you are living your own life and stay focused on what matters most to you. Keep your eyes on your goals, stay true to your own values and don’t allow yourself to get sidetracked by trolls and people who care more about being “right” than being decent.

4 | You don’t draw a line on the spot.

Back in the day, I was one of those women who believed that biting my tongue when someone insulted, upset or offended me made me “nice” or showed “decorum”. The reality was that it made me feel terrible, I was treated as a pushover and there are plenty of ways to stand up for yourself without looking like you belong on a reality show. Once I started saying things like “don’t speak to me like that again” or “I am sure you don’t realize how you’re coming across, but I am finding it very aggressive” or simply staying silent, my life changed. Not only did most people stop, many apologized, and guess what? They knew not to do it again. Yay for no drama and loads of self-respect!

5| You’re a martyr.

We live in a world where people love to show off how much they can achieve in a day-and then complain about how exhausted and unappreciated they are. The truth is we have 24 hours in a day and 7-8 need to be for sleep and a few need to be for you. I don’t care what is going on in your life, a person who doesn’t take a few minutes to connect with themselves and take a few deep breaths is going to be bitter, angry and resentful quite a few moments each day. These small moments will add up and corrode your happiness and seep out in ways you never expected. You are not a superhero or a saint. You’re a human being who needs food, shelter, water, spiritual nourishment, mental stimulation, affection and an identity that stems beyond what you do and what other people call you. Only give what you can while still making time to take care of yourself and ask for what you need to make that possible.

6 | You’re not willing to do the work.

This is such a big one. If you don’t do what you need to do, you’ll never get what you want. Even if, by some stretch, you prove me wrong and someone hands it all to you, you won’t keep it. While life can throw us curveballs, the truth is most people are not willing to do the work it takes to achieve what they want. We don’t always like to hear it, but the reality is that, if you want something, it is your responsibility to do the research, reach out, ask for advice, sharpen your skills and make the effort. Those who work hard and smart tend to find a version of what they are looking for (or something better) whereas those who stand there with their proverbial hand out spewing out wishes and whining they are unlucky are guaranteed to go nowhere.

7 | You’re rude.

There are some people who mistake snarky for clever and others who just straight-up hate. They rarely get emails about job opportunities, invites to birthday parties and have loads of drama in their friendships. Guess why? Nobody likes them.

8 | You don’t make the effort.

We all have busy lives and things to do, but when you can’t be bothered to show up for someone’s birthday (every year) and think a text is an appropriate of sharing your condolences to a “dear” friend who has suffered a loss, you send the message that you don’t care. Do this enough and your friends will hear the message loud and clear and respond accordingly.

9 | You take more than you give.

Doing things for people we care about is one of the joys in having relationships, but when you’re constantly giving to someone without ever being on the receiving end, it gets draining. Worse, if you’re more concerned with what you want than what the person in front of you needs, there’s a massive issue. Say you’re sorry when you need to and let the friend who has just been hit with hard news have a few days before you ask them to do you a favor.

10 | You’re afraid.

Here’s an undeniable truth: fear is a very real part of life, but unless we learn how to manage it and move through it, we will stay paralyzed in situations we don’t want to be in instead of moving forward to something better. To have a full, complete and authentic life, you are going to need to take risks. The risk to speak up and out, to move on, to open your heart, to pack up and move to another country…and the list goes on. The good news is that most of what we worry about happening never does and confidence are built by making small efforts each and every day. One small act of courage can have a massive domino effect. Give it a try!

Pharma cos. and celebrities flood DNC festivities

by Ashley Balcerzak and Emma Baccellieri

The klieg lights were on full strength Wednesday at a star-studded lunch highlighting obesity treatment and, later, a Fergie concert, both put on by the Creative Coalition — with help from pharma giants like Novo Nordisk — on the third day of the Democratic National Convention.

“I think you couple the artistry with celebrity to create a commodity and currency that has tremendous value to raising awareness and advancing the agenda of whatever cause we are backing at that time,” said actor William Baldwin, the former president of the Creative Coalition, an entertainment industry advocacy group that focuses on social issues as well as those affecting its members.

And the celebrities certainly turned out in force for both events, including actress Ashley Judd, Reid Scott of Veep, Diane Guerrero of Orange is the New Black, Troian Bellisario of Pretty Little Liars, Dean Norris of Breaking Bad and Elizabeth Banks of Pitch Perfect, who had a big role at the convention on Tuesday.

Spotted in the concert crowd in Philadelphia’s legendary Electric Factory were Sen. Bob Casey (D-Penn.), host committee chair and former Gov. Ed Rendell and The Newsroom‘s Alison Pill. Taboo, from Fergie’s former pop group the Black Eyed Peas, even joined her onstage for the encore of “I Gotta Feeling,” even though the band played its own concert the same night at the Fillmore for Rock the Vote.

All guests at the invite-only performance walked a red carpet, but only VIPs were admitted upstairs to enjoy a private bar and view of the show from above. Fergie took the stage after 1 a.m. and played for nearly two hours, dropping an endorsement of the party nominee between club favorites such as “London Bridge” and “Glamorous.”

“Hillary Rodham Clinton is a mom I’d like to follow, so this one’s dedicated to her,” Fergie announced before launching into her new single “M.I.L.F.” (While the acronym’s “M.I.L.” do stand for “mom I’d like to,” the “F” does not typically stand for “follow.”)

The healthcare industry was responsible for the lion’s share of the concert’s sponsors; besides Novo Nordisk, the big names included Abbott Laboratories, AmerisourceBergen, Novartis, and Pfizer. All have a history of generous political giving, with most making $ 1 million or more in direct contributions so far this cycle, and all are active in lobbying on healthcare issues.

The energy industry was also well-represented, with Edison Electric Institute, the Nuclear Energy Institute and Southern Company on the sponsors’ list. Other companies that put up to make the event happen: the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, railway company Norfolk Southern, political consulting group Shorr Johnson Magnus, law and lobbying giant Squire Patton Boggs and tech companies InterDigital and eBay. Just one individual was named as a sponsor — Renee Cafaro, a freelance political consultant without a history of big campaign contributions, though she has given nearly $ 18,000 to candidates in this cycle. She is also the sister of Ohio State Sen. Capri Cafaro.

And at lunch, a word from our sponsor…

Earlier in the day, Novo Nordisk and the Creative Coalition teamed up to present a lunchtime panel discussion on obesity treatment. Featured were a former mayor of Nashville and director of Harvard’s Institute of Politics; a retired major general in the Army; a patient advocate; a business nonprofit focused on health care; and a doctor at the National Center for Weight and Wellness. The group held a similar seminar in Cleveland last week.

As it turns out, the Danish pharmaceutical power has a big stake in the matter. Panelists praised the use of weight loss drugs and stressed the importance of getting other doctors and medical providers to buy in — and Novo Nordisk produces Saxenda, an injectable weight loss drug for people with a body mass index greater than 27 (about 20 percent overweight), approved by the FDA in 2014.

The company brought in about $ 37.1 million globally in Saxenda sales in the first quarter of 2016. Novo Nordisk produces a handful of drugs aimed at treating diabetes and obesity, bringing in about $ 3.1 billion globally in sales for this class of treatments so far in 2016, compared to a total of about $ 12.7 billion in 2015. The company has a whole brought in $ 4 billion in net sales in 2016 and $ 16 billion in 2015.

“We have a couple of others in our pipeline, but they’re years away from consideration,” said Ken Inchausti, director of branding at Novo Nordisk. A 2015 report shows at least four compounds that target obesity are currently being developed.

So it wasn’t surprising, perhaps, that at the close of the panel, the corporate vice president of Novo Nordisk took the stage with a call to action.

“We need help from the policy makers in the room to support the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act,” Curt Oltmans said. “We just wanted to make you aware of that.”

One of the things the proposed legislation does? “Authorizes HHS to cover. under Medicare part D, medication for treatment of obesity or for weight loss management for an overweight individual with one or more related comorbidities,” reads the bill summary.

The firm mentioned that particular bill at least 13 times in 2015 and 2016 lobbying reports, according to an OpenSecrets analysis. The firm has reported spending $ 1.6 million on lobbying activities through June 30 of this year, putting it on track to top the more than $ 2 million it spent in 2015.

The obesity bill appears to need a nudge to get it moving. It has been introduced in Congress more than once but has never moved past the committee level.

“Our efforts are focused on working with partners to raise the awareness about obesity and overweight, and provide medicines (now and in the future) that can give patients more options for success,” Inchausti told OpenSecrets Blog in an email.

Novo Nordisk has given $ 427,000 to candidates and political parties this cycle, almost all of it through its PAC; Republicans have received 63 percent of the $ 286,379 in PAC money that has gone to candidates. More evenhanded gifts were given to the party committees: $ 30,000 each to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and its Republican equivalent, both of which raise funds for House candidates, and $ 25,000 each to the corresponding senatorial committees.

So what did the policymakers, medical industry representatives and celebrities dine on while listening to a panel on obesity? Salad, grilled chicken and asparagus — pretty healthy so far. For dessert after the talk? Ice cream. Hmmm.

Sit-down meals can be a third rail for any federal officials paying attention to ethics rules, but an expert we consulted said this one probably passed muster. “A three course meal sounds extravagant but well within the bounds of ethics rules,” said Ken Gross, a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in Washington.

The meal seemed to pass a several-pronged test set out in the rules: It was widely attended (25 people or more), included a diverse group (more than one company represented) and the educational panel could fall “in connection with their duties as officeholders,” Gross said.

Women rule, even with glass roof

Later that afternoon, about a mile away, a bit more star power was on display — Shonda Rhimes, head of such hit shows as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, was among the speakers at an event sponsored by EMILY’s List. Rhimes added a bit of Hollywood flair to a lineup of Democratic heavyweights, including Rep. Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and Sens. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), all speaking about supporting women in politics.

But they weren’t the only lawmakers on the scene: Sens. Claire McCaskill (Mo.), Amy Klobuchar (Minn.) and Debbie Stabenow (Mich.), as well as Senate candidates Tammy Duckworth (Ill.), Katie McGinty (Pa.) and Maggie Hassan (N.H.) helped fill the room, too.

EMILY’s List, a PAC that distributes millions of dollars to pro-choice female Democrats in each election cycle, rented out the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts for the afternoon’s event. Under a literal glass ceiling, attendees packed the area in front of the stage and mingled throughout the space.

Between speakers, some guests snapped pictures in a photo booth with prop signs reading “Women Can Stop Trump” and “She’s with Us,” while others applied shimmery metallic flash tattoos “Pantsuit Up” and “Shirley 1972, Geraldine 1984, Hillary 2016.”  And the PAC’s merchandise tables featured also had tables selling merchandise, including an EMILY’s List tote bag for $ 35 or a 30 t-shirts that read “Run Like a Girl.”

On the way out, attendees picked up free water bottles printed with “A Woman’s Place Is in the White House” and the EMILY’s List logo.

EMILY’s List has become a giant in the Democratic fundraising apparatus. The PAC has given more than $ 2.7 million directly to candidates so far this election cycle, nearly all of them female Democrats, including more than $ 400,000 to Hillary Clinton. But EMILY’s List makes its biggest impact not with direct contributions, but with outside spending done through its affiliated super PAC, called Women Vote! It has made more than $ 9.5 million in independent expenditures this cycle — nearly $ 5.4 million supporting Democratic candidates, and the remainder devoted to countering the messages of their opponents. Almost $ 2.6 million of the money of has been used against Republicans, while the other $ 1.5 million has been used in primaries against Democrats opposing candidates favored by EMILY’s List.

An EMILY’s List representative confirmed that Wednesday’s event had no corporate sponsors and was hosted solely by the PAC itself.

From what we could see, no rocks or stale chunks of bread were thrown at the glass ceiling. Maybe that’s for Thursday night.

Setting Expectations That Support Team Balance

Expectations are everywhere in our life – at home, at work, in our relationships with others and self. They can be about anything we want or hope to have happen. Sometimes they are grounded in reality and other times not, and many times – especially at work – they are unclear.

When it comes to the topic of work-life balance – many times the expectations are unclear because creating a two-way opportunity between managers and their team to openly share, set, and communicate expectations is not commonly done, especially around this topic. When it comes to expectations at work, there are three ways to consider them, those for and of your team, those between you and your manager, and those you have of yourself.

Team Expectations
Let’s be honest: Employees LOVE to blame their managers for their imbalance, level of stress, workload, or lack of context. Not because your team members are ill meaning, but because it is much easier to blame you or maybe your manager than to take accountability for the choices they are making or ways they are working that might be the actual reason for the pain points they are experiencing.

It is not up to you to manage your employees’ balance, workload, goals or commitments. It is up to you to teach them they have a choice in how they manage these things for themselves and to have ongoing conversations with them to provide guidance. That’s about it. Your job is to understand the expectations your team members have on you and you on them, and to encourage conversations for clarity when needed and as often as needed.

Conversations that typically are avoided between a manager and his or her team include, expectations around what “on call” really means, weekend and evening work hours, e-mail response time, requests for help and meeting behaviors. Pick one to start with to begin to develop the habit of openly talking about expectations and providing clarity around common issues people feel uncertain and uncomfortable bringing up with their managers.

Your Manager’s Expectations of You
You have expectations of your team, and your manager has expectations of you. Having conversations around expectations for balance and team stability is rather new, so your manager might not be proactively having these conversations with you. The good news is that you can start the conversation with your manager just as easily as you can start the conversation with your team.

Have an intentional conversation with your manager that addresses their expectations regarding you being reachable at all times and on weekends, email response time, their perspective on company policies and how they are willing to help you push back as needed for unreasonable or out-of-scope work requests. Your willingness to begin this conversation with your manager, not only can bring you clarity but can role model a new type of conversation with them that they might be willing to have with their other reports.

Expectations on Yourself
Finally, there are the expectations you have for yourself as a manager and the ideas you have around how you want to be perceived as a manager. Many managers want to be liked by their team, which is only natural as all humans yearn for acceptance. However, there is a difference between a leader who pleases and a leader who inspires.

For you to address the impact of imbalance, it is essential that you become clear on what you expect for yourself when it comes to work-life balance. Consider what work-life balance means to you, and what you need to support creating that type of balance. Examine how you want to be perceived by your team when it comes to work-life balance and in what ways you are (or are not) leading by example.

An open conversation about your expectations with your team allows you to provide clarity around purpose, needs and outcomes for your team. An open conversation with your manager allows for you to receive the same clarity you set with your team. An internal dialog with yourself can help validate alignment for the path you have chosen.

When expectations are shared, everyone is on the same page. It doesn’t mean everyone will agree, but it does mean everyone has the same understanding and clarity about what is expected to move forward.

Sly Guy Secretly Swaps His Family Photos For Steve Buscemi Pics

It took a while for this mom to get the picture.

Kevin Manion, 21, of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin decided to play a hilarious trick on his parents by secretly switching framed family photos around his parents’ home for pictures of actor Steve Buscemi.

And his parents didn’t notice right away, either.

His sister Clare,19, tells The Huffington Post that her brother started the prank on July 20, and swapped one photo a day for five days. On day two, his father figured it out, but it took her mom a whole five days to discover that something fishy was going on.

“She saw [Kevin’s] senior picture from far away and was so confused because his head was too big and the colors were wrong,” Manion told HuffPost. “So she walked over and saw it was Steve.”

Manion said her mom thought it was hilarious, and apparently so did Manion.

She posted photos of her brother’s gag to Twitter, where it has received over 50,000 likes and over 30,000 retweets.

But why Buscemi? Manion had a very simple response:

“My brother thought Buscemi was the best face to have around the house.”

Why Democrats Don’t Have More Tim Kaines

2016-07-27-1469647150-2187339-imrs.php.jpeg

Last week, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton announced Virginia Senator Tim Kaine as her running mate. Many Democrats are happy with Kaine, a respected bilingual Senator with an impressive resume. Others, who were hoping for a more diverse pick, are less enthused.

In an election cycle where names like Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren and Julian Castro were floated around as potential running mates, I’ll be the first to admit that I can understand why some Democrats might feel disappointed that Hillary Clinton chose a white man. After all, wouldn’t it be great to have the first female President serving alongside the first Vice President of color? Or, just as exciting, how about an all-female ticket?

But to the progressives who are lamenting the fact that Clinton chose Tim Kaine to be her running mate, I have one thing to say: just like that Meghan Trainor song, “It’s all about the bench.” Before being elected senator, Tim Kaine was first a city councilor, mayor, lieutenant governor and governor. No person of color has ever held all of these offices. When women and people of color continue to be so underrepresented in the political process, fewer of them are able to rise to the offices that typically precede a vice presidency.

Don’t get me wrong — there are prominent women and people of color who are incredibly qualified and would serve well as a Vice President to Hillary Clinton. One of them is someone I’m a huge fan of, Cory Booker, who generated some early buzz. But, like Elizabeth Warren, he’s a Democratic senator in in a state with a Republican governor. Choosing one of them would have meant losing a key seat in the Senate, which we really can’t afford. Cory Booker is the only African American Democratic senator. The only one. And, right now, there’s not a single person of color serving as a Democratic governor in the United States.

I wholeheartedly agree that it’s important to have individuals on the ticket that represent a demographic other than white men, who make up only 31 percent of the population but hold 65 percent of elected offices in the U.S. However, if we want major party nominees to pick running mates from underrepresented groups, then the first and best thing we can do as voters is to give them a larger pool of accomplished and diverse leaders to choose from.

This means that there is some good news for the progressives who aren’t wild about the addition of a white man to the ticket: you can take actions to help solve the bigger issue. Volunteer. Vote. Donate. Support an organization like mine, Emerge America, which recruits and trains Democratic women to run for office. Or Higher Heights for America, which seeks to expand the Black women’s leadership pipeline; New American Leaders Project, which trains first and second generation Americans to run for office; or Running Start, which introduces young women to the importance of political leadership. Even consider running for office yourself. Do everything you can with the resources and skills at your disposal to help elect more people of color and women to offices at every level of government.

I challenge progressives to think long-term and take action. It’s not going to be a quick fix, but true progress rarely is. By working to elect more leaders from underrepresented groups, we can help change the face of leadership – and the pool of potential VP candidates will look different four or eight or 16 years from now.

So tonight, let’s hear what Senator Kaine has to say. And tomorrow, let’s start working to make sure that the next time we have the opportunity to nominate a new Democratic candidate, we’ve got more women and people of color with credentials like his to choose from.

The Way Of The Outlier: A Scientific Mystic Or Mystical Scientist?

Based on my theory of biocognition, as navigators of our personal journey we can access science to measure with our senses or with the instruments that serve as extensions of our senses, whereas with mysticism, we can explore the dimension that transcends measurements while providing valuable information for our navigation. One is not more valuable than the other because they both are part of the totality of the cultural agreements that our brain applies to find meaning in our world.

In my view, there are two options to find our time and place in our humanity: mystical scientist or scientific mystic. Anything other than that restricts our perception to reductionist science or fussy New Age. There’s a better way if we move from the restrictions of extremes to the middle way of experience.
Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, and Mahatma Gandhi, were scientific mystics because they recruited science to understand their vision. Conversely, Albert Einstein, Max Planck, and Richard Feynman were mystical scientists because they imposed their vision to understand science. The former group was comfortable with the mystery beyond life, and the latter was at peace with the mysteries of life. Both were seekers with insatiable curiosity and conviction to serve humanity.

So, I ask you to search within your personal experiences and sense of purpose, to find which path will serve you best. Both journeys provide answers, but if you disconnect from the hybrid value they provide, you will seldom find peace.

Decide today, and enter the journey that serves you best.

Could Your Job Help You Be Less Stressed?

Work is a major source of stress. That may be obvious to anyone who’s ever struggled to meet a deadline or reported to a difficult boss, but it’s also borne out by research. Work (along with money) consistently ranks among the biggest sources of stress for adults, according to the American Psychological Association.

If work ― and being at work ― creates stress, it might reasonably follow that the most effective ways to reduce stress lie outside the workplace. But a range of companies aiming to help employees reduce work-based stress claim the issue should be dealt with at the source.

While experts may disagree over the effectiveness of de-stressing strategies and services, a cottage industry has emerged to help workplaces track and mitigate employees’ stress and, at least in theory, boost performance and productivity.

“We spend most of our waking hours at work ― so the workplace is a natural starting place for dealing with stress,” Dr. Andrew Shatté, chief science officer of the stress management company meQuilibrium, told The Huffington Post. “If companies can help employees to experience less stress, it’s a win-win – the employee is healthier and happier in their own life and more successful at work.”

It’s this prospect that has many employers paying attention. Workplace stress costs companies up to $ 190 billion a year, according to one 2015 study. That helps to explain why, as of last year, about 70 percent of American companies included some form of a workplace wellness program.

At a time when health perks like company gyms and fitness challenges are relatively mainstream, the bet is that mental health – including stress management – is the next frontier.

Anti-stress programs take many forms. MeQuilibrium, for instance, offers software that companies can buy to give their employees digital lessons and coaching on how to deal productively with setbacks. LifeDojo is another digital platform that creates customized 12-week programs for people to address their personal stressors. Both are accessible through computers and mobile apps.

There are also real-life consultants, like those offered by Clarity Seminars, which is run by a traveling duo of wellness consultants.

Matthew Grawitch, a Saint Louis University professor who studies workplace stress, said that increased media coverage of topics like wellness and happiness has also contributed to the rise of workplace programs, including stress-reducing offerings, from therapy to yoga.

“Whether we’re talking about the Affordable Care Act or books like The Happiness Project, happiness and wellness are big sellers,” he told HuffPost. “There also seems to be an increased push for financial wellness programming and education, given that financial stress can have a huge impact on people, and it tends to spill over into the workplace.”

So, do people actually use corporate stress management programs? And do those programs actually make any difference?

On the first point, an NPR survey found that 51 percent of respondents said their company had a wellness program, and about 40 percent said they utilized them.

Whether that constitutes a huge success or a lukewarm response, Diane Domeyer, executive director of the staffing firm The Creative Group, told NPR the investment is worth it.

“There’s a recognition that the cost of burnout — either in the form of lower productivity or, in extreme cases, the loss of employees — is more costly” than taking steps to reduce workplace stress, she said.

And as to whether the programs really help with stress, Grawitch, the St. Louis University professor, said most programs amount to “tertiary interventions,” which address the visible symptoms of stress, like yoga for a tensed body. It’s harder, he said, to address the underlying factors that aggravate stress like lack of sleep, a demanding workplace culture, and layoffs that increase people’s workload.

“Stress is a subjective phenomenon,” said Shatté, of meQuilibrium. “So a subjective measure, like a self report, does not get at the very heart of stress. But it’s also important to evaluate your stress management program in terms of all aspects of stress: sleep quality, physical health, emotional health, productivity and performance ― each of which can use ‘harder’ measures.”

One big, relatively simple thing companies can do to help with stress management is to encourage workers to take regular time off, said Grawitch.

“But that doesn’t just mean vacations,” he said. “That also means recovering in the evenings and on weekends.”

Companies need to support employees’ “self-regulation” between their work and non-work lives, Grawitch said, adding that a day or two off work on a regular basis, outside of a long chunk of vacation time, can help decrease stress in the long run.

Why You Should Meditate While Lying Down

If you think you have to be sitting up in order to properly meditate, think again. Latham Thomas, founder of Mama Glow, advocates for meditating while lying down, a method she refers to as “beditation.”

“There’s a different feeling that you have when you’re lying down versus when you’re seated upright,” she said, explaining that you can practice this type of meditation just about anywhere.

“You could be at home in bed, in your office on the floor, or even under a tree outside,” Thomas said. She recommends lying flat on your back with your palms up. You can also modify the position by placing your legs at an angle or lying on your side.

Thomas believes beditation can also help you get a better night’s sleep.

“We already have this directive that when we’re lying down we’re supposed to be falling asleep. You’re already basically sending a signal to your brain that it’s time to relax,” she said.

Watch Thomas explain more of the benefits of meditating in bed in the video above.

This video was produced by Rebecca Halperin and Katrina Norvell.

Ice Bucket Challenge Funded A Major Breakthrough In ALS Research

If you dumped a bucket of ice over your head two years ago, this will give you goosebumps all over again.

The viral Ice Bucket Challenge helped fund the discovery of a new gene associated with ALS. The identification of the NEK1 gene, by Project MinE, provides scientists with a new potential target for therapy development for the progressive neurodegenerative disease that can rob the body of its ability to speak, eat, move and breathe, according to the ALS Association.

Project MinE’s discovery was made possible thanks to funding from a number of sources, including money that was collected during the ice bucket craze.

The social media phenomenon was key to supporting the initiative because it brought in funding from “new sources in new parts of the world,” Bernard Muller, an ALS patient who helped found Project MinE, said in a statement.

Spearheaded by Pete Frates, a former Division 1 athlete with ALS, the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral in the summer of 2014. It pushed people worldwide to pour buckets of iced water over their heads and to share the moment on social media to raise awareness and funds for ALS research.

The campaign was wildly popular, engaging celebrities from Oprah to Bill Gates.

The Ice Bucket Challenge raised $ 88.5 million in a matter of weeks, allowing the ALS Association to fund several research projects, including Project MinE.

“Global collaboration among scientists, which was really made possible by ALS Ice Bucket Challenge donations, led to this important discovery,” John Landers ― who led the study, which involved 80 researchers ― said in a statement, “It is a prime example of the success that can come from the combined efforts of so many people, all dedicated to finding the causes of ALS.”

In addition to the support it got from the Ice Bucket Challenge, Project MinE was also funded by donations from the ALS Association’s Georgia and Greater New York chapters, and New Amsterdam City Swim, according to the release.

An estimated 20,000 people in the U.S. have the disease, according to the ALS Association ― and 15 new cases are diagnosed each day. There is still no cure.

Project MinE research was the largest-ever study of familial ― or genetic ― ALS, according to the release. Muller was inspired to start Project MinE after he toured an ALS research center in the Netherlands and saw that thousands of DNA samples were left unused due to lack of funding.

Thanks to ALS Association’s funding in 2014, Project MinE, an international initiative, was able to establish a research arm in the United States, led by Landers at University of Massachusetts.

The newly discovered NEK1 gene now ranks among the most common genes that contribute to the disease, providing a new potential target for therapy development.

This is the third ALS-related gene discovered thanks to funds raised through the massive fundraising effort, according to CNN.

“I’m incredibly pleased with the discovery of the NEK1 gene,” Muller said, “adding another step towards our ultimate goal, eradicating this disease from the face of the earth.”

24 Black Men Can No Longer Stand Up For Justice, So We Did

At least 24 unarmed black men in America have been killed by police officers since January, according to data collected by The Counted

Many of these killings have gone largely ignored by mainstream media but their lives, and their deaths, absolutely matter. On Monday, Ryot, which is an extension of HuffPost that produces virtual reality videos, teamed up with the organization Black Men for Bernie to produce a powerful video that pays tribute to those killed.

Together, they helped to rally social justice advocates who were gathered in Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention to read aloud the names of the 24 black men who have been killed by police this year.

Engage in the immersive experience by using your mouse to navigate through the video below to see the faces of those who have died. May they rest in peace.

Can’t Move Forward? Maybe This Is Holding You Back.

The other day, in a mad dash for lost information, I pored through old and recently deleted emails, getting lost in a sea of old news. I went back as far as ten years, connecting random threads from what I thought was the source of the missing information I sought. The search inadvertently led me sideways and backwards into a mass of family health and medical history that was both compelling and disturbing. After an hour of this sleuthing, I received a phone call and left my office, one thing leading to another in a familiar distracted style, until finally, I walked my dog.

Fluffy, exuberant dog on leash, earbuds inserted, Bob Seeger blaring, I found my thoughts miles away from my feet, entirely missing the sun-soaked path on the river’s edge. Mentally I was reviewing the years-old emails. Many of them were desperate attempts from friends and acquaintances to connect with me in my previous strife. Jogging along the river, I felt that strife. My mood shifted, my gut wrenched, my neck stiffened. My foot hit a shrub root, and I tripped over the leash, skinning my knees and elbows.

Back at the house, I cleaned and bandaged my wounds. It could have been a lot worse, I knew. The phone rang, and I was diverted by a radio interview I’d momentarily forgotten about, followed by a series of book signing requests. It was another two hours before I returned to my inbox, hidden behind a slew of browser tabs. Reading the mail, I was at first perplexed and a bit disoriented. Why were people sending me impassioned messages about prayer and healing? It was a moment before I realized that what I’d been reading was the same trash I was buried in this morning.

The thing about trash is — it’s a waste.

It’s obvious that old news is a time drain. There were so many other things I could (and should) have been doing. But while I was following that email thread, I did notice a couple of things. One was that some of the most impassioned emails had gone unanswered by me. The other was that those same acquaintances had not been in touch with me since.

First I thought–why should that bother me? After all, at the time I’d been tending to the critical medical details of the prolonged emergency of a family member. And anyway, the statute of limitations on email etiquette had surely expired. I returned to my computer and shipped all the troublesome mail to the recycle bin where it belonged. Out of sight, out of mind. Not that the recycle bin is the end of the information road, God knows. To actually delete old news in a permanent way is a separate and very deliberate step in the process of freeing the computer of storage clutter and moving forward.

Life is a lot like that.

We humans runneth over with old, unprocessed, undeleted news. As fast as things happen in our modern world, it’s no wonder that we race on as if nothing has happened at all. I personally know people in the New York area who have never even discussed 9/11. They just…could not. So they ‘moved on’ or ‘through’ to a safer stretch of road on the information highway. The problem is if we’re not deleting old news, especially traumatic news, we’re building on its unbalanced foundation even when we think we’re not. Like an old-fashioned game of Jenga, we pile new experiences on top of old unresolved experiences, hoping no one will remove the stabilizing pieces, reducing our fragile wooden towers to rubble.

Gurus reinforce the importance of the present moment, and computer trash is a good way to understand its weight. If you’re spending the day saturated in old news, especially bad news, you can’t possibly create anything new or good. Old experiences ransom our ‘mindshare’, creating a mental/emotional brain drain that causes overreactions to unrelated issues. The truth is–nothing fresh can be created from old material, already set or dried. Picture a potter throwing clay already baked and hardened, or an artist trying to manipulate dried paint from an old canvas. It can’t be done.

That afternoon, reflecting on these thoughts, I wondered–why had I not emptied my own bin? Both digital and emotional? Why were those files so handy? What possible good did I think could come of holding onto so much grief and sorrow? I was over it, wasn’t I?

Maybe not.

And so began the self-examination that led me to this question: What had I missed in that experience that still awaited resolution? After a period of meditation, I realized that in that strife I had felt alienated from everyone I knew. (Or at least from those who had not had a similar experience, which was pretty much everyone I knew.) A gregarious person, I was suddenly alone and in charge of a terrifying situation for which I had no reference points. People were eager to give advice, and yet, they had no idea what we were experiencing. How could they? So I hunkered down to figure it out myself. Isolation, even self-imposed, creates walls of resistance that for a while may be a protective reflex, but over time can become a hardened form of ingratitude. I realized that for a time, I too had become ungrateful, even for those offering all they had–prayer and solace.

That evening I walked into my office, sat down, and deleted my entire recycle bin. Hidden files were everywhere, so it took a while. But this time it was well worth it, because now I was creating room in my computer for new stories, new threads, new events. Afterwards, I picked up the phone and called a few old pals, creating room in my heart. Awkward at first, I soon felt my burden lighten precipitously. Some day, I thought, it would be these people who would need help. I wanted them to know that I had taken the time to create room, not only for myself, but for them.

Room to move forward.

Dare To Be 100: Santa Barbara Again

Maybe 35 years ago I was in this lovely town by the sea. I can’t recall specifically the reason I was here, maybe a spillover of a family visit to the Hearst Castle a way up the coast. In any case during my visit I happened to be here the night that Norman Cousins was speaking about his memorable book, The Anatomy of an Illness that he had published in 1974. This book became very important to me, as it was to many others. It was vital because of Norman’s unique way of expressing the turmoil that all of us experience when we are seriously ill. Except that he did it better than any of us could. Anyhow he was presenting his book at a series sponsored by the City College of Santa Barbara, with a spectacular campus overlooking the Pacific.

I did not know then that Santa Barbara City College, SBCC, is generally regarded as the top city college in America. Its faculty, curriculum, and facilities are outstanding. The continuing education division with which I’m currently involved has a wide variety of topics ranging from needle pointing to medieval music. I am proud to be a part of it.

Little did I know that this encounter was to impact the rest of my life as it did. First, Norman and I were to become intimate friends. For a number of years we shared many visits at his home in Los Angeles and he at our home in Palo Alto. We co-spoke at several wellness get-togethers, including an AMA meeting in Las Vegas where Linus Pauling, Norman’s close friend, sat in the front row. A treasury of memories are recorded.

The second imprint of that first meeting was a familiarity with the City College where now, in September, I am preparing my own series, an eight week course entitled the Science of Longevity. This is my mantra. I’ve given my course twice at Stanford, once at Berkeley, once at Santa Clara University, and snippets at many other places. Together with my writing my ninth book, in progress, Aging is Negotiable, these two activities sum up my raison d’etre, my search for my life’s meaning. I was a loyal husband for 63 years, now finished with Ruth Anne’s death last year, I fathered four wonderful children all now on their way to stardom, I have grandfathered nine great kids each ready to play in the main ring. I’ve completed all of these biologic tasks. But when I look in my personal mirror I ask that since my biologic role is finished what further role is there yet to play? My answer emerges that Mother Nature is not yet ready for me to end my personal contribution. This is the reason behind my course here in Santa Barbara which starts on September 17. I still have work to do to complete my human potential, which I take to be the universal answer to:”Why Live?” Not having lived a long fully responsible life I assume to be an abortion. I don’t like this word in connection with myself.

Now all of this takes on an even rosier resume because my second daughter, Gretchen has a lovely home here that always has a welcoming bedroom. I am living the best of two worlds, still deeply involved in the rich intellectual broth of Stanford that is perpetually stimulating, and now having this wonderful new platform here in Santa Barbara I’m doubly enriched. I still have work to do.

This lovely city of Santa Barbara comes as close to being a contemporary version of Eden as any city anywhere. Blossoms abound. No wonder Oprah hunkers down here.

Me too, again.

What if we stopped speaking negatively and instead used words of kindness?

By Elizabeth Santiago
UCF Forum columnist

Children usually begin speaking their first words about 11 or 12 months old. From “mama” and “dada” come more complex words and thoughts.

These infants begin to take in the outside world and make it their own with each new experience. With those new experiences and growth come a perspective on the world and the ability to share it. We learn our methods of communication quickly, but how many of us truly understand the impact our words have?

Words have the power to console those in grief, uplift the downhearted, and inspire those who feel defeated. History shows us how influential speeches are to groundbreaking movements and changes. It’s hard to imagine where we would be without Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream…” speech, or Ronald Regan’s speech calling for Russia to tear down the Berlin Wall.

Although best as a positive influence, words can also lead to painful ramifications. Through his persuasive techniques, Hitler managed to persuade numerous countries to kill more than 6 million innocent people just because of their religion. What started out as a way to communicate to survive, has the capability of being the vessel in which hate and destruction flow through.

At a young age, I experienced how hurtful words could be. When I was bullied at school, my mom incessantly recited “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me” as a form of comfort. As bad as I wanted that phrase to be true, life had taught me a lesson that I could not ignore.

I learned that the pen is truly mightier than the sword. The impact of words has the ability of molding the lives of others. For example, my mother was constantly ridiculed for her Hispanic accent while speaking English. Hollywood hadn’t glamorized the way Latinos spoke English yet, so this proved to be a traumatic experience for her. This, in turn, caused her to emphasize English over Spanish when raising her children. Having a limited grasp of Spanish, however, caused me to struggle with my identity as a Latin American woman.

Though mightier than the sword indeed, the pen shares the double-edged blade characteristic with its counterpart. It is for that reason we must be cognizant of what we say and how we say it.

With the tragic events that have taken place recently around the world, we have seen the power of our words at work. We have witnessed vile words turn into actions of hate, only to leave us with an unbearable loss. We can put an end to this; we must put an end to this.

In theory the answer is simple, but the answer is far more complex in practice. What if we listen to others and learn to communicate? What if we promote and invest in love as much as we do our businesses, companies, and sources of income? What if, we stop ourselves from speaking negatively and instead speak words of encouragement and kindness?

It is easier to refrain from something when it is not actively portrayed in our society. In these past couple weeks, I have made it my mission to spread positivity in any way I can. Whether it is making small talk in a waiting room, smiling to those who cross paths with me on the way to work, or even voicing my appreciation, I have noticed that the attitude becomes infectious.

It’s amazing that after learning how to convey our thoughts and emotions as we age, we don’t do it nearly as much as we should. In fact, I challenge everyone reading this to do a random act of kindness or genuinely vocalize their appreciation for someone today.

As Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Have the strength to speak your mind, the wisdom to know when to hold your tongue, and the compassion to love continuously.

What Would Happen If Toddlers Could Negotiate Like Adults

It’s no secret that toddlers are not especially keen on sharing their toys. But they seem to have trouble explaining exactly why.

In the latest installment of their “If Toddlers Could Put Their Feelings Into Words” series, the funny moms of The BreakWomb show what would happen if toddlers could calmly articulate their thoughts on sharing.

Instead of throwing tantrums, the “toddlers” in the video use logical reasoning to negotiate like adults and explain why their parents’ efforts to make them share their toys are totally in vain.

As one toddler says, “Kids my age are incapable of altruistic prosocial behavior.” Asks another,  “Why don’t you share your wallet with Sharon?”

Well played, kiddos.

Dear Ivanka, Good Start, Keep Pushing…

The final balloon has dropped and the GOP Convention, intended to unify and present the case for why the Americans should vote Republican, is over. For mainstream Republican women, the Party platform, Party record, and Party rhetoric, despite speech points designed to woo “women,” are more concerning than ever.

I am a fiscally conservative Republican who is also Pro-choice. For years I have worked to weigh my dedication to both – they are NOT mutually exclusive. I am pro-choice because of my stalwart beliefs in traditional conservative values that allow families control over their major life decisions and in a government whose role is to safeguard its citizens, not limit their choices.

I’m pro-choice because I believe in safe access to the full range of reproductive choices –education, abstinence, contraception, adoption, motherhood and safe, legal and rare abortion. I may disagree on abortion rights with many in my Party, but the Supreme Court ruling in Whole Women’s Health, protecting access to abortion care pre-viability, is, for now, settled law. Republicans should now turn their focus on ways to actually lower the high rates of teen and unplanned pregnancy, as well as the rates of abortion in our nation.

True fiscal conservatives support reproductive planning, because if, when, and how many children to have impacts the economic viability of families and of taxpayers, perhaps more than any other issue.

Don’t take my word for it; let me give you a few facts from one of the most lauded speakers at the GOP Convention, Ivanka Trump. Ms. Trump noted that women represent 46 percent of the US labor force and that 40 percent of American households have a female primary breadwinner.

She also highlighted research revealing that gender is no longer the major factor creating the greatest wage discrepancy in this country, motherhood is. That’s right, reproductive choices ARE economic choices for millions of families and taxpayers.

I was thrilled (and a little surprised) to see convention delegates applaud Ivanka’s call for equal pay for women and for improvements to our nation’s labor laws. However, it is not just our labor laws that are outdated, but also anti-choice, anti-family planning laws which reflect a time when women were not recognized as a significant portion of the workforce or equal players in their family decisions.

Ivanka’s call for affordable childcare is to be applauded, but equally important, and attainable, is a Republican plan to lower the rate of teen and unplanned pregnancy in our nation.

Take a look at a few more facts on how reproductive choices impact opportunity for teens and women, and how laws lowering access to reproductive health care adversely impact efforts to lower abortion rates and promote healthy families.

  • U.S. women report that roughly half of all pregnancies are unplanned. More than 3 million annually; 40 percent of these pregnancies end in abortion.
  • 48 percent of all births in the U.S. are paid for by Medicaid.
  • The average cost for one Medicaid-covered birth is12,770, while the annual per-client cost for publicly-funded contraceptive care is an estimated239 per year.
  • 1 in 4 girls in the US will become pregnant before the age of 20.
  • In the U.S. more than 600,000 teenage girls who will become pregnant each year.
  • 30 percent of teen girls who have dropped out of high school cite pregnancy/parenthood as a key reason. Fewer than 2 percent of those who have a child before age 18 attain a college degree by age 30.
  • Teen childbearing costs taxpayers9.4 billion yearly.
  • The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, funded at a tiny fraction of this cost for105 million, has already had a major impact in lowering the rate of teen pregnancy and has saved millions of dollars in related health, hospital and entitlement costs.

Reducing teen and unplanned pregnancy will save billions in tax dollars; it will reduce poverty, increase educational achievement and workforce competitiveness, and improve health and social outcomes for children and families. Moreover, since unplanned pregnancy is the cause of the vast majority of the nation’s abortions, reducing teen and unplanned pregnancy reduces abortion. See how much sense that makes?

If our Party truly stands for opportunity, promise and healthy families — then why did our new Platform promote the most anti-choice, anti-family planning rhetoric in the history of the Party? And why did House Republicans just push a committee bill that cuts the very programs, the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program and Title X, that are proven to lower the rates of teen and unplanned pregnancy?

Policies that allow women with children to thrive should not be novelties, they should be the norm. These are not my words but a line from Ms. Trump’s speech that drew significant applause from the GOP standard-bearers on the floor of the Convention.

Mainstream women voters need more than just good words, in good speeches, we want good policy that help American families and their pocketbooks; policies that help American taxpayers and promote opportunity and economic prosperity for all. Ivanka, keep at it; those of us on the common-sense side of the reproductive rights debate welcome you anytime.

Room At The Table

Custom has it that on a Passover Seder you set a place for a stranger.

Adding another plate should be natural. But sometimes people forget their welcoming customs.

When my brother Jonathan was living in Santa Monica after college and wasn’t able to fly home for Passover, he asked my aunt, my father’s sister who lived in Brentwood, if he could bring his then-girlfriend along for the Seder. My aunt said no, repeating an insult she had committed decades before. In the 1970s, she refused a dinner invitation to my maternal grandmother who came to visit Los Angeles.

Ah… so now, “why?”

It would take a lot of history to explain why my aunt’s heart contracted the ways it did. There was the Depression and poverty in the 1930s and 40s, there was early loss of her father (my aunt was only 9 at the time) to lung cancer, and there was the instability and cruelty of her mother, my paternal grandmother, who once welcomed me into her home in Culver City by hanging up the phone with that very aunt and asserting “she’s a bitch,” before even uttering a “hello” to greet me. A lot of layers of deprivation and pain there — like an onion. However, even knowing my aunt’s backstory, I’m still baffled by her refusal to set a place for another guest to join the table. For her, there just wasn’t room.

My aunt had her reasons. She was actually highly intelligent. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College at 18. She was actually politically progressive and active in civil rights causes. Yet as the years wore on, she concocted fantastical scenarios and could drone on for hours about of the righteousness of her convictions. Anger and deprivation can lead people to build walls for protection.

Facebook provided an image that succinctly captured my aunt’s dinner guest problem. The words: “when you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence” were superimposed over a photo of a table covered by food and flowers with laughing people seated on both sides. The image was meant as a rebuttal to Trump’s proposal to build a wall to keep out Mexicans. Those who need a meal and safety are often the first to be criminalized. Separating and dehumanizing others is all too familiar to those of us who celebrate Passover, those whose relatives were refugees in the Second World War. I’ve seen the numbers tattooed into the arms. Art and speech can be rejected art as “degenerate” (as Giuliani did when Mayor of New York). But Passover tells a story of freedom. The refugees wandered and found a home. During a Seder, we set a place for a stranger, extend the table, and break down the walls.

My aunt meant and did well in many areas of her life but she forgot to extend a place at her own table. Amassing a lifetime of grievances, it was no longer in her nature to do so. A lot of people seem to be forgetting their welcoming customs as they claim deprivation, fear, and anger. But while the RNC hate-circus at Cleveland was underway, an act of resistance was going on in Vermont, a kind of Seder of diverse faiths.

On a farm on a mountain overlooking a vast expansion of land and free roaming cattle, horses and vegetation, a group of people gathered for a meal and discussion. The topic at hand: How to help welcome refugees? Around tables covered in wildflowers (picked by yours truly in the mist of brambly fields under the hot sun – I even fought a bee for one unique purple blossom) discussion percolated. There was Christopher Louras, the Mayor of Rutland Vermont, who is leading his town in welcoming 100 Syrian refugees. There was Hans Van de Weerd, Vice President for US Programs for the International Rescue Committee (IRC). There were professors from Dartmouth, MIT, and Harvard Law School. There were philanthropists and farm hands, teachers and aid workers, and there were many children. Summer thunderstorms temporarily threatened to blow down our tent, but dinner guests grabbed the wooden poles and held the dining hall together until the sun returned.

The hosts of our IRC Room At the Table event are the kind of people who always welcome another guest at their table. They remind me of the Righteous Polish Catholics, Irena Zawadszka and Zophia Olzakowska, who hid and saved my cousin Rachel during the Holocaust. Both women answered me so simply when I asked “why did you risk your life to do what so many did not?” Their answer: “It was natural.”

My aunt couldn’t set a place at her table for her sister-in-law’s mother or her nephew’s future wife because deprivation and hardship hardened her heart. Maybe it’s too crowded in the room or the food budget is already stretched too thin. My uncle, who was older and stronger, had beat up my aunt and my father for a piece of food. The effects of that abuse lingered. Maybe the conversation could lead in unpredictable or scary directions as new minds and ideas add to the mix. She have felt threatened by my grandmother or by Jonathan’s girlfriend. But as the signs at the DNC convention read: “Love Trumps Hate.” I wish we could find it in our natures to set a place for the stranger.

Olive Garden Waiter Goes Beyond Call Of Duty To Help Sick Baby

An Arkansas mom was left speechless when a waiter at Olive Garden went above and beyond to help her family during a difficult time.

On July 21, Dallas French and her family stopped at the Olive Garden on North Rodney Parham Road in Little Rock after spending a difficult day at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. French’s 4-month-old daughter Ellee tested positive for E. coli earlier this month and needed to undergo another series of tests at the hospital.

Exhausted from the stress of her daughter’s illness, the mom was struggling to feed the baby and eat her own meal. That’s when a very special waiter stepped in to help. French shared her story and a sweet photo of the waiter with Ellee on Olive Garden’s Facebook page.

“[A]fter all that had happened that day, I was really out of it,” the mom wrote in the caption, adding that she hadn’t gotten much sleep over the past month. When the family arrived at Olive Garden, Ellee was hungry, so French tried to prepare a bottle for her, she explained. However, the mom spilled the bottle all over herself and the floor, so she prepared another one.

At that moment, their waiter offered to help. Having just brought salad and breadsticks to the table, he told French, “Here let me feed her and you eat,” the mom recalled.

“This melted all of us and this is what we need more of!” French wrote. “He fed her, I ate my salad and bread sticks and that milk on the floor got cleaned up after we left because he just understood! He didn’t even know what we had went through that day and showed us love and understanding ― not irritated that I had made a mess and my baby was screaming.”

“Gosh I wish I woulda got his name because he deserves the recognition!!” she added.

In just two days, the mom’s post received over 155,000 likes. Commenters identified the waiter in the photo as Robert Davis, and French subsequently friended him on Facebook.

French told The Huffington Post that she shared her post on Olive Garden’s Facebook page at the suggestion of friends. “Everything was such a blur that day, and I was so frazzled and mind-blocked,” she said, adding, “We just left a good tip and left, but I didn’t get to tell him how much I appreciated him doing that one act of kindness and that it changed my whole day and made what’s been going on this past month a lot lighter.”

French explained that Ellee had been sick since July 8. “She was diagnosed with a UTI and hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney), so her kidney and tube to her urethra will be monitored,” the mom said, noting that doctors were optimistic she would recover with time.

Today, Ellee is doing very well. “You wouldn’t know anything was wrong with her now,” French said. “She is still getting back on her normal routine ― we are almost there!”

The mom hopes that the story of the waiter’s good deed will be a beacon of light in the midst of the negative events in the news lately. “I hope … that everyone will see pure love between two strangers and that is what we need more of,” she said. French said she also wants others to be inspired to do good deeds and “just be respectful of one another and appreciate life.”

“We can accept the differences between us all and still show love!”

Many Victims Of Gun Violence Are Suicides. We Can Save Lives With Smarter Policies.

On a morning in April of 2014, a Northern Virginia political activist and photographer named Drew Kleinbrink was facing a time of deep emotional crisis. He responded to that crisis by purchasing a gun. Within hours he had taken his own life with that gun, leaving behind a wife and daughter with a hole in their lives.

For many Americans, thoughts of gun violence typically turn towards horrific headlines ― the public acts of destruction that happen in our churches, in our schools, and in our nightclubs. And why wouldn’t they?

But the sad reality is that the majority of our nation’s shootings happen behind closed doors in homes across our country.

Every year over 20,000 Americans die from suicide with a firearm. The United States has one of the highest gun suicide rates of any developed nation.

One reason why we have such a high gun suicide rate is that we have loopholes in our laws that make it too easy for people in crisis to get their hands on a firearm. Through research, we know that commonsense laws can help reduce gun suicides and save lives.

In states that require a background check on all private handgun sales, there are 48 percent fewer firearm suicides. A basic background check has the power to deter suicide and prevent thousands of firearm deaths every year.

We must also do more to empower law enforcement, family and friends to help their loved ones during their times of need.

In most states, law enforcement are unable to remove firearms from people who exhibit dangerous or threatening behavior unless they are prohibited from owning a gun. This gap in our nation’s gun laws makes it difficult for families and law enforcement to keep guns away from people who are threatening violence against themselves or others.

In states that require a background check on all private handgun sales, there are 48 percent fewer firearm suicides.

Why should the people who are the first to see the signs of a person in crisis be rendered powerless to do anything about it?

It’s time for our leaders to come together and listen to our nation’s leading law enforcement experts to address our nation’s gun suicide epidemic.

We also think that in order to address our nation’s gun suicide crisis, it’s important for us to fully understand it.

Since 1996, at the behest of the gun lobby, the federal government has failed to fund any research into gun violence at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, our nation’s leading public health institution. Congress must renew federal research funding into the causes and costs of gun violence, and strategies to reduce it.

These ideas are not radical ― they are commonsense solutions. Solutions that help deter suicide from firearms.

Solutions that close the loopholes in our laws that make it difficult for families and law enforcement to keep guns away from people in crisis.

Solutions that allow the federal government to research and fully understand the scope of our nation’s gun suicide problem.

Solutions that will not only make our communities safer ― but will also save lives.

The few private researchers who study gun suicides have found that guns are the most lethal means of suicide, resulting in a death rate of over 85 percent.

They have also found that the decision to end one’s own life is often spontaneous and can be deterred by making it more difficult to access a firearm during a crisis.

That’s just what we know now. Imagine the changes we could see in 20 years, if we pass responsible policies that are proven to reduce gun suicides and provide funding for America’s best researchers to address this epidemic.

Imagine how many lives we might save.

Standing In The Flames Of Our Soul’s Fire

I love Tuesday mornings. It is the time when I get to stroll the farmer’s market, chatting with friends whom I see as I take in the beauty of the fresh local vegetables, fruits, dairy and meats. Last Tuesday, I stopped at a small cheese stand. Soon after I arrived, two young boys approached. Eagerly, one of the boys exclaimed, “Oh my gosh! Cheese!” The other boy replied rather unenthusiastically, “Yea. So.” Followed by a bewildered question from his friend, “You mean your mom lets you eat cheese?” The farmer and I both smiled endearingly and when he left, he said with a gentle laugh, “First world problems.” “Indeed” I replied.

Having lived two years in a small underdeveloped town in Brazil as well taking yearly pilgrimages for the past seven years to work with a Q’ero family, an indigenous tribe in Peru, I have come to a more intimate understanding of what this means. In the high villages of Peru at 16,000 feet, the only food that grows there is potatoes. I joined them at every meal as they carefully and adoringly peeled back the potato skin and gleefully popped them in their mouth. I watched them for two weeks, every day and every meal eat potatoes with the same joy as if they were eating them for the first time.

On my first visit I stayed in these high mountain villages which had no electricity nor running water. I met a young Q’ero woman and it seemed very apparent that she had never seen a Westerner before. Having no arm hair, she was enthralled by mine and gently touched it as she rolled my skin in between her fingers. Speaking only Quechua, she asked me why I didn’t have my hair double braided as all the other women did. Then she offered to braid it for me. As I let her braid my hair, I felt a wellspring of grief wanting to arise out of nowhere. I made my way to the river where I wept a thousand complicated desires of my life. All of the taking, the wanting to be seen, the desire for more, to have some recognition and to thrive were all attempts to fill this gaping hole which didn’t seem present in their culture. In my psyche, the hole was constantly reoriented to my enculturation which keeps the cycle of ‘what about me’ perpetuating.

Being with them was a culture shock for my psyche into a ‘we’ culture. In Peruvian traditions, the underwords (our inner worlds) isn’t ‘hell’ or a negative place. It isn’t filled complicated repressed emotions. It is the home and cavern of Pachamama, the World Mother who is the Creatrix of all Creation and is often depicted as a dragon or a serpent.

A significant loss in my life occurred the year after this first visit where the river of my grief brought me into many unattended sorrows. In a culture, where I learned the opposite of expansion was failure, it has taken a lot to come into an intimate relationship with loss. When loss was present, when my work wasn’t flowering, it was so easy to try to whip myself back into a state of expansiveness, an attempt to blame myself into perfection for not being good enough. It was also easy to blame others, see how ‘they’ weren’t doing it right or blame the culture.

It takes a lot to loosen this grip of control to my inner depths and allow this sacred shattering from this ‘me’ perspective as it gradually opens to an awareness of a greater whole. Having years of therapeutic training, it has been a shedding for my therapeutic sense of self where I tried to consciously or unconsciously fix, master or control my depths. It was useful for a while. There is also a time to not follow these habits to grasp, maintain or take and to burn in the flames of our soul’s fire. There is a time to get rubbed down of a thousand complicated desires of what we have been told to want or who we need to be. This is a holy fire filled with both grief and grace of sacrifice. Or as Rumi wrote, “To change, a person must face the dragon of his appetites, with another dragon, the life-energy of the soul.”

The rise of the feminine Earth is truly here and roaring. Also arising are the cultural shadows and how quickly things can become co-opted in a survival grip of the dragon of appetite if it goes by unexamined. The shadow may even appear glittery with hopes and promises that we too can have the quick and easy road where we fulfill our dreams and create a blissful life of abundance effortlessly. It seems to me the real work of coming into the sacred dimension of soul is a slow journey. It is the constant willingness to turn towards our shadows, to be humbled and knocked off our thrones of where I/we prop ourselves up, make ourselves better than (or less than), so the real roar of our soul can emerge with passion and purpose in deep equality and care for all of life. Are we going to grasp for a grandness of culture where we constantly look for immediate satisfaction of our own desires, the next best experience, fame, recognition, etc? Or as we going to dive deep and open to the grandness and glory of soul and co-create from here? Can we dare make the shift from the new age perspective of co-creation which still orients around “What can I get?” To the radical soul question of “What is life asking of me?”

What is our most sacred longing and how can this be our guide?

This Couple’s CrossFit Wedding Will Get Your Heart Pumping

Kettlebells are ringing!

On Saturday, Oliver Drewes and Christina Moore of Brooklyn tied the knot at the 2016 CrossFit Games in Carson, California.

The bride donned a sports bra and tennis skirt for the occasion, while the groom wore a T-shirt and shorts as they recited their vows in front of an audience of fellow CrossFitters. Both Drewes and Moore completed the athleisure look with personalized “bride” and “groom” sneakers.

When asked who he thought would win the CrossFit games, Drewes replied, “I won because I got to marry the woman of my dreams in the middle of the StubHub Center.”

The couple was chosen after entering the Reebok WOD Wedding social media contest and sharing their CrossFit love story.

Fittingly, the bride dropped some CrossFit lingo during her vows.

“I promise to push you to achieve PRs while still no-repping you when you don’t break parallel,” she said. “In sickness and in health, until death do us part.”

Moore said her big day was everything she could have hoped for, calling the wedding a “phenomenal experience.”

“Our CrossFit Box is a community like nothing I’ve ever experienced,” she said in a press release. “And the relationships and support are what brought Oliver and myself back each day and then together for life!”

Afterwards, they cut a cake ― paleo, of course! ― and the newlyweds spent the rest of the day watching the finals hand-in-hand.

Watch these “swolemates” tie the knot in the video above.

The Huffington Post reached out to the couple for comment, but had not heard back at the time of publication. This story may be updated.

The Mammoth Book of Travel in Dangerous Places: Arctic

The Mammoth Book of Travel in Dangerous Places: Arctic

Four Years in the Ice – John RossDisgraced and dishonored for his report of an imaginary mountain range blocking the most likely access to the North West Passage, in 1829 Ross returned to Canada’s frozen archipelago to vindicate his reputation. He rounded the north of Baffin Island and entered what he named the Gulf of Boothia. Here the Victory, his eccentric paddle-steamer, became frozen to the ice. Through three tantalizingly brief summers the expedition tried to find a way out and through four long winters then endured the worst of Arctic conditions in a makeshift camp. In July 1832, with the ship long since abandoned, Ross made what must be their last bid to reach open water. Living off Lichen and Leather – John FranklinIn 1845, looking again for the North West Passage, two well-crewed ships under Franklin’s command sailed into the Canadian Arctic and were never seen again. There began the most prolonged search ever mounted for an explorer. For Franklin had been lost before and yet had survived. In 1821, returning from an overland reconnaissance of the Arctic coast north of Great Slave Lake, he and Dr. John Richardson, with two Lieutenants and about a dozen voyageurs (mostly French), had run out of food and then been overtaken by the Arctic weather. Franklin’s narrative of what is probably the grisliest journey on record omits unpalatable details, like the cannibalism of one of his men, the murder of Lieut. Hood, and Richardson’s summary shooting of the murderer; but it well conveys the debility of men forced to survive on leather and lichen (triple de roche) plus that sense of demoralization and disintegration that heralds the demise of an expedition. Adrift on an Arctic Ice Floe – Fridtjof Nansen Norwegian patriot, natural scientist, and Nobel laureate, Nansen caught the world’s imagination when he almost reached the North Pole in 1895. The attempt was made on skis from specially reinforced vessel which, driven into the ice, was carried from Siberia towards Gree

Sitting this Election out is no way to Take a Stand

I recently had someone share with me that they had no plans to vote for either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump in November. They were repulsed by both candidates and were considering leaving the presidential portion of the ballot blank.

Though the sentiments seemed heartfelt and sincere, they were reflective of a self-righteous arrogance that leads to an apathetic impulse that has marred American society for some time.

Ironically, not voting is still voting. It’s voting for what one desires least. It is to crave for the type of Supreme Court nominees and appointees to the federal bench one wants least in order to maintain a sanctimonious stand of nonparticipation.

It’s true that taken together, Clinton and Trump have the highest negative ratings at this point of any nominees in recent memory. But does one actually believe that nonparticipation will cause the major political parties to nominate someone in the future more to their particular liking?

Granted, the aforementioned example was selective apathy, but apathy nonetheless. In its many forms, apathy has been a harmful corrosive, methodically destroying our democratic values. It may very well be the greatest existential threat to our democratic republic form of government. Apathy poses a larger threat to society than terrorism, illegal immigration, or Wall Street oligarchs.

If left unchecked, sustained apathy could lead to chronically bad government, political malfeasance, the erosion of communication between government and public. We obviously are not there at this point, but for more than 50 years, voter participation has been largely on a downward trajectory.

What appeared in 2008 to be a hopeful sign that would change the direction of voter participation would be viewed later as the outlier in an undeniable trend of decline.

In what The New York Times cited as “the worst voter turnout in 72 years,” the 2014-midterm elections were an opus dedicated to apathy. No state reached the 60-percent plateau in terms of voter turnout. The three largest states — California, Texas and New York — had voter turnouts below 33 percent.

Large swaths of the electorate have opted not to participate. Yet the anger, passion and frustration that we currently witness somehow belies that reality. With a Shay’s Rebellion-like fervor, people have taken to streets in ways not seen in the 1960s. But an undeniable incongruence exists between those passions and actual participation at the ballot box.

How long before the increasing apathy will outpace Alexis de Tocqueville’s definition of “American exceptionalism?” Unlike the sophomoric manner that the aforementioned term is defined in contemporary discourse, de Tocqueville’s definition was at best a backhanded compliment.

According to de Tocqueville:
The position of the Americans is therefore quite exceptional, and it may be believed that no democratic people will ever be placed in a similar one. Their strictly Puritanical origin, their exclusively commercial habits, even the country they inhabit, which seems to divert their minds from the pursuit of science, literature, and the arts, the proximity of Europe, which allows them to neglect these pursuits without relapsing into barbarism, a thousand special causes, of which I have only been able to point out the most important, have singularly concurred to fix the mind of the American upon purely practical objects. His passions, his wants, his education, and everything about him seem to unite in drawing the native of the United States earthward; his religion alone bids him turn, from time to time, a transient and distracted glance to heaven.”

For de Tocqueville, America’s exceptionalism is achieved in spite of itself. Can we simultaneously embody de Tocqueville’s definition of exceptionalism and remain apathetic while staying on the difficult path in pursuit of that “more perfect union?”

I also understand that call for increasing voter turnout, while good for the health of our democracy, does not necessarily make for good politics. The trend this century has been that higher turnout benefits Democrats while lower turnout benefits Republicans — a fact borne out by Democrat dominance in presidential elections and Republican supremacy in the midterm elections.
Politics notwithstanding, we’re a better nation when more people participate.
How long can we continue on our collective apathetic pace, equating the sound bites that meet with our suppositions as fact, while dismissing those that fail to correspond as nothing more than hyperbolic propaganda?

Maybe we could partner with the makers of Pokémon Go so that the ballot booth could be a destination that one must locate on Election Day.

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Can STDs Be Transmitted Through Swimming Pools? An Expert Weighs In

The Question: Is it possible to catch STDs from swimming in a pool or hot tub?

No, not unless you’re having sex in the pool with someone who has an STD.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an individual can only pass on an STD through direct person-to-person contact. Take syphilis, for example. The disease cannot be transmitted through casual contact with doorknobs, seats, eating utensils, or pools.

Dr. Edward Brooks, an infectious disease specialist  at Stanford Health Care, explains that there is no evidence that an individual can get an STD from casually swimming in a pool. Transmission of STDs through a hot tub or pool are only possible if two people are engaging in sexual activity while in the water. An intimate exchange of bodily fluids is necessary in order for those types of diseases to be passed along to someone else.

Although you may have dodged that STD bullet, it’s important to remember that there are other diseases one can get from being in a pool.

“The most common are diarrheal illnesses, transmitted by ingesting the organism accidentally while swimming in the pool,” Brooks said.

These types of illnesses are mainly caused by fecal contamination, which is when someone who has diarrhea goes swimming and contaminates the water with an infectious microorganism. Once the microorganism is in the water, people who ingest enough of it while swimming could become sick.

In order to protect yourself from such diseases, Brooks explains that it’s important to make sure all pools or hot tubs you choose to swim in are well-maintained. If you are using public facilities, it would be smart to verify that the facility is meeting chlorine and PH balance standards. If you have a pool of your own, learn how to correctly maintain it or hire an outside service to ensure it is being done adequately.

All public freshwater pools should be cleaned and disinfected with chlorine products, the substance used to kill bacteria, most viruses and algae. Without the use of these chemicals, we would almost always be swimming in a giant puddle of germs. Let’s just take a moment to let that sink in ― yuck!

The CDC has set of science-based guidelines that local and state public health authorities can use to create their own regulations to monitor the safety of public pools.

Brooks also said that it is very important to practice good hygiene. Take a shower before and after you go swimming to prevent the transfer of diarrheal illnesses. Also be sure to clean your bathing suit with soap and water after use.

To sum it all up, the only STDs you can get while swimming are those passed through intimate sexual contact with someone who has an infection. Practicing good hygiene, like showering before and after swimming and properly cleaning your swimsuit, can help keep you safe from the most common waterborne illnesses that could be lurking beneath the surface.

Hillary Clinton Introduces Tim Kaine As ‘Everything Donald Trump And Mike Pence Are Not’

Hillary Clinton made her first appearance with vice presidential pick, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), hailing him for being extremely qualified for the job and offering a stark contrast to Donald Trump and his VP choice.

A beaming Kaine took the stage with Clinton in Miami and sat behind the presumptive Democratic nominee after she introduced him on stage at the rally in Miami Saturday.

While Trump has called Mexicans “rapists,” vowed to build a wall and deport millions of undocumented immigrants, Kaine spoke in Spanish during his opening remarks. “Bienvenidos a todos en nuestro pais, porque somos Americanos todos,” he said. (“Welcome to all in our country, because we are all Americans.”) Kaine continued to pivot back and forth between Spanish and English throughout his comments and at one point thanked naturalized citizens in the audience for choosing to become United States citizens.

“Senator Tim Kaine is everything Donald Trump and Mike Pence are not,” Clinton said. “There’s no doubt in my mind, because I’m here with him, that Tim is qualified to be vice president.”

Echoing the language she used to describe herself during the presidential campaign, Clinton painted Kaine as a pragmatic progressive.

“He’s a progressive who likes to get things done. That’s my kind of guy, Tim.”

Clinton said that one of Kaine’s first cases as a lawyer was doing pro-bono work representing an African-American woman who had been denied an apartment because of her race. While Kaine was taking on housing discrimination, Trump was denying apartments to African Americans, Clinton added.

Noting that the NRA was headquartered in his state, Clinton said Kaine wouldn’t hesitate to push for gun control.

“Make no mistake, behind that smile, Tim also has a backbone of steel. Just ask the NRA,” she said. His voice rising, Kaine repeatedly said “we will not rest” until the U.S. has gun control.

Clinton also criticized the negative picture of America that Trump painted in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention and his claim that he alone could fix the country.

“When someone says I alone can fix it, that should set off alarm bells in not just Democrats’ minds, but Republicans’, independents’, people of all ages and backgrounds,” she said. “That is not a democracy,” she said.

The rally stood in stark contrast to Trump’s introduction of Pence, which was held at a Manhattan hotel last weekend. The GOP presidential candidate spoke mostly about himself for 30 minutes at the event before he got around to introducing his VP pick. And while Trump left the stage as soon as the Indiana governor stepped up to the lectern, Clinton sat behind Kaine as he spoke.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article mistranslated part of Kaine’s opening remarks as saying, “Welcome to our country.” In fact, he said, “Welcome to all in our country.”

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

The One Habit For Better Sleep You Might Have Overlooked

You know that sleep is essential for good health, and you’ve tried everything: munching on sleep-enhancing superfoods, banning screens from the bedroom, and getting sleep tips from Arianna Huffington (she’s serious about it).

But it turns out there’s a super easy, science-backed method for improving your snoozing, and it’s probably one you haven’t considered: sleeping naked. (Sounds great in this humidity, anyway!)

According to a report on The Cut, sleeping in the nude can help you clock those prescribed seven to eight hours and improve the quality of your zzz’s. So prepare to say adios to your trusty pajama set–it’s just not necessary.

Read on for three benefits of going to bed in the buff.

1. It’s cooler
According to a study by the University of Amsterdam, you get better–AKA deeper–sleep when you have a lower body temperature. So when your skin is cool from not wearing anything (ever felt the heavenly sensation of cold sheets?) it’ll be easier for your body to drift into a quality sleep. Added bonus: It’s cheaper than blasting your air conditioner.

2. It may boost your metabolism
A study done in 2014 showed that cool temperatures alter your body fat and metabolism. Lowering your body temperature by sleeping naked will do that, by burning calories as your body attempts to keep warm. It’s kind of like the best workout ever.

3. It helps with intimacy
Sleeping nude not only benefits your body–it can help with your relationship as well. Having intimacy issues? Hit the sack without any clothes on, which can trigger a release of oxytocin, AKA “the love hormone.”

And if nudity is not your thing, just make sure your PJs are made out of breathable material (bye, synthetics). The cooler you feel, the deeper you’ll sleep.

Brexit And The South China Sea: Why Politicians Lie

2016-07-13-1468373311-7400519-image_update_img.jpg

China’s so-called historic rights in the South China Sea are bogus (see here, and here.) Since the 1990s, Chinese leaders and politicians have consciously been spreading false historic evidence about purported ancient Chinese possessions in the disputed waters, not only to rally domestic support for China’s maritime expansion, but also to justify the seizure of territories occupied by other neighboring states.

Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage and the majority of politicians campaigning for the United Kingdom to quit the European Union have consciously been feeding the British public untruths in the run up to last month’s Brexit vote. The most blatant example being the Leave campaign’s promise to spend the (£) 350 million Great Britain purportedly sends to the EU every week on the National Health Service. (The UK Statistic Authority repeatedly exposed the number as false.)

In the two instances cited above, both Chinese and British politicians are liars. However, they appear to lie for two different reasons. Whereas the former are telling strategic lies–falsehoods in the service of the national interest or raison d’état–the latter have spread selfish lies-untruths spread to protect their own selfish interests–during the Brexit campaign. (Simon Kuper recently classified the referendum as an Oxford Union election gone awry.)

Of course this classification is a subjective assessment. Nevertheless, one thing is objectively true: Both Chinese President Xi Jinping and former London Mayor Boris Johnson have primarily lied to their people rather than lying to leaders of other countries, which unfortunately for the two, however, may have a greater negative net effect than inter-state lying on their respective countries’ institutions and population, as John J. Mearsheimer points out in his 2011 book Why Leaders Lie:

[T]he most dangerous kinds of international lies are those that leaders tell their own citizens. They are more likely to backfire and damage a state’s strategic position than the lies leaders tell other states. Moreover, they are more likely to corrupt political and social life at home, which can have many harmful consequences for daily life.

In the case of both China and Great Britain, Mearsheimer appears to have been proven right.

Enforcing dubious historical rights through so-called gray zone coercion in the South China Sea–justified by an obvious historic untruth akin to the Donation of Constantine–China has isolated itself internationally and helped cement a burgeoning anti-China coalition in the Asia-Pacific region. The United States, while not always prone to speak the truth on the South China Sea either, only had to sit back and bear witness to China containing itself in the murky waters of the Western Pacific.

The lies of Boris Johnson and his cohorts threaten the very existence of Great Britain with a Scottish referendum on the country’s independence again on the table. Northern Ireland might follow suit. Great Britain might turn into the Little England of the 15th and 16th centuries “with trouble at home and an uneasy relationship with the continent, at once needing trade with it yet fearing its influence,” as the historian Margaret MacMillan recently wrote in FT Weekend.

It would be, however, too easy to just blame the leaders and politicians of the countries for spreading lies in one form or the other. Lying about a historical record is often tied to the presumed necessity of creating nationalist myths in order to build and maintain a state. China’s “historical rights” in the South China Sea are partially predicated on this assumption that national myths are essential in the country’s rise to power, and that they are, even if not true, needed to hold the country together.

Brexit supporters in the United Kingdom have also tried to invoke English nationalism by recalling an idyllic but simultaneously glorious past, when Great Britain was sovereign over its destiny; Britannia was ruling the waves, and–most importantly–foreigners and immigrants were confined to their proper place (presumably not England). However, English national myth making (unsurprisingly) appears to have had a centrifugal effect on the United Kingdom that has divided rather than united the country so far.

Ere yet another frontal assault on the Elite, it is worthwhile to point out that Mearsheimer asseses that the people, not just a country’s leaders, are complicit in creating national myths, or, put more bluntly, national lies:

The creation of national myths, however, is not simply a case of elites concocting false stories and transmitting them to their publics. In fact, the common people invariably hunger for these myths; they want to be told stories about the past in which they are portrayed as the white hats and opposing nations as the black hats. In effect nationalist mythmaking is driven from below as well as from above.

Nevertheless, this observation should not be taken as an excuse by leaders and politicians to whitewash their dishonesty. While a good case can be made about the necessity for inter-state lying on occasion, a case for leaders to lie to the public is much harder to make, and one does not even need to recall Kipling’s chilling epitaph on the British dead of the First World War: “If any question why we died, Tell them, because our fathers lied.”

The principle issue with leaders and politicians consciously lying to their constituents is that it prohibits people from making informed and rational choices. In the case of China, this is specifically the reason why they are being lied to, since an informed and rational Chinese public, in all likelihood, would not support Xi Jinping’s brinkmanship over a few rocks in the Western Pacific (“Mourir Pour Scarborough Shoal?” Anyone?).

In the case of the United Kingdom, a Western democracy, the fact that Boris Johnson’s acolytes got away with lying to the public without serious repercussions not only spreads mistrust between those who govern and the governed, but more importantly, and alas more troublesome to a democracy, it is poised to undermine the rule of law–the lifeblood of the democratic experiment–since trust in elected leaders and the law is the sinew that holds any democratic system together.

Ultimately, lying in any form, whether in domestic or international politics, more often than not increases the chances of unintended consequences–Brexit is happening, and the anti-China coalition in Southeast Asia is consolidating.

“If we’ve been telling lies, you’ve been telling half-lies. A man who tells lies, like me, merely hides the truth. But a man who tells half-lies has forgotten where he put it,” a British civil servant tells a disgusted T.E. Lawrence in the film Lawrence of Arabia highlighting an additional danger in lying. Liars sooner or later will have difficulties separating facts from falsehood. In that sense, both Boris Johnson and Xi Jinping may simply also have forgotten where they put the truth.

Dial Up The Frequency Of Love — It’s All Good

“The world has gone crazy!”

“People have lost their minds!”

“It’s not a safe place!”

“The world is going to hell in a hand basket!”

SO.MUCH.FEAR.

How about instead of getting sucked up into that vortex, we dial up the frequency of Love?

Yes, there is a lot of upheaval, chaos, if you will. And instead of trying to control it and being afraid of it, we can look at it for what it is:

The perfect unfolding in which many blessings lie. The new paradigm emerging as the old ones crumble.

It’s all good.

Fear, scarcity and lack are not sustainable anymore. That’s why it’s showing up more than ever. It’s fighting for it’s last breath. It’s always been there – all the horrors that are happening around the world – we just know where it lives now.

It’s in our face.

Why?

Because we are waking up!

I learned that in space when light expands and hits darkness, there is initial friction when they meet before light expands some more.

So, shine on and embrace the friction, knowing that on a grander scale, everything is playing out as it should for one simple reason…

To restore balance and harmony.

Does that rub you the wrong way?

Ah, there’s the friction.

Do you want to defend the limitations of being right? After all, there’s so many stories to support why the world has gone mad. Just turn on the news, read the paper, or log in to the social networks.

Instead, dare to Love even when it seems impossible or even when it feels wrong – after all, shouldn’t we be raging when yet another act of violence has been reported across the globe? Doesn’t that show we care? So, how can we love when atrocities are happening around the world?

How can we not?

I do know from experience that Love is the most powerful frequency on the planet and it’s always there because it’s all there is. We are conduits for that frequency. We can at any moment choose to allow Love to flow through us.

Talk about true power.

Ask yourself how it feels and what it looks like to dial up the frequency of Love when, in that moment, you want to react and post away on social media the expression of your rage.

Pause and pay attention to what comes up for you.

I definitely have my reactions to what’s happening in the world and I have my feelings about it. When I’m triggered, I step away and deal with my emotions first. I allow them to show me what it is I’m really upset about.

I check in with myself before I post anything. Am I coming from a place of Love? If not, I do not post.

These are extraordinary times to be living on the planet. Extraordinary times to be choosing Love.

So no matter what’s happening around you, I dare you to dial up the frequency of Love.

And then pay attention to what happens.

Because, as a friend of mine always says, “It’s all good.”

And it is.

How I Went From No Way To Namaste: How Yoga Saved My Life

Last year I was a heap of depression. I was a 35-year-old new mother who suffered major complications after the delivery of my daughter. Those complications gave way to the aftershocks of PTSD and a heavy dose of postpartum depression. The dream of summer days spent enjoying my little one, taking long walks with the stroller, working the garden, and getting a night or two out with my partner were shattered into shards of anxiety, anger, lethargy, a deep mistrust of my own body. It was lonely, and it sucked the life out of me. I got real bitter before I got better.

My younger sister came to visit from California where she lives as a yoga instructor; reached out down to the depths of me and encouraged me to just “try” a yoga class. I was completely turned off, there was no way that I was going to Namaste my way out of the sinkhole that surrounded me. Or so I thought. She went back home and I spent a few more months in my misery until one evening I received a phone call from another friend asking me to join her for an all to early morning yoga class the next day. I accepted her invitation and the next day I found myself sweating and sliding across a yoga mat.

There were women twice my age holding poses as I flipped and flopped all over the floor. My sweat turned to tears as I realized how far I had fallen away from my body. Despite my poor performance something peaked my interest. I was moving through my body to reach my monkey mind. I felt just the slightest bit more settled after that first class, so I went back the very next day, and I have kept going back for five months now.

After the first week or two of scrambling to get a sitter so I could show up to the studio every day my life began to change. I was sleeping better, eating better, I had more patience for my children and for myself. Physically I was still not anywhere near the others in the class, but my mind started to calm down. My anxiety began to subside slowly. I was hooked.

I began a steady practice, missing perhaps one or two days per week. I tried all different kinds of yoga. Hatha, Vinyassa, Restorative, and Kundalini. Each class had its own unique benefits and I began to round out the rough edges in my head and in my heart. The studio where I practice noticed my dedication and asked me to intern; and now I have found a community amongst the other yogis from all walks of life. The teachers would begin and end each class in meditation and it was in those moments where all the physical work of yoga integrated into mental stability and calm. I began to emerge better than I was before my bout with depression.

Yoga and meditation has completely transformed me. Physically I am stronger, leaner, more flexible; my skin even glows. But inside, mentally is where the real change has occurred for me. I am quicker to note the positives in life before the negative. I am more kind to those closest to me. I want to help others achieve their goals. I think the practice allowed me to step outside of myself and become part of a bigger picture painted with patience, understanding, compassion, and endurance.

Where once I was skeptic, I am now an advocate. I have my sister and all the wonderful teachers to thank for that. They inspired me on my journey from “No Way, to Namaste”; and I am forever grateful.

5 Questions For Rick Smyre And Neil Richardson About America’s Political Future And ‘Preparing For A World That Doesn’t Exist – Yet’

As we head into convention season, it has become apparent that something is broken in America’s federal politics. Gridlock has ground much of government to a halt and the process of choosing presidential candidates has never been so drawn out, expensive, and for many, disheartening. According to a recent Gallop poll, Party affiliation has dropped to a new low. People are asking: Is the Federal system failing its citizens?

Rick Smyre and Neil Richardson are futurists who have seen the growing dysfunction of government coming for some time. Their book, Preparing for a World that Doesn’t Exist – Yet, offers some surprisingly optimistic pathways for a more vibrant and more resilient future in politics, economics, community development, education and healthcare. The book’s launch takes place Saturday, July 23rd at the 50th World Futures Conference in Washington D.C. This falls right in between the Republican and Democratic Conventions – as if they are two slices of bread, and the book launch is the sandwich filling. I decided to interview Smyre and Richardson about the book, with a focus on what needs to change in our political process:

Question 1: Why do you think the federal political system is in trouble, and what do we need to do to fix it?

Answer: The federal system is broken. It no longer works as it did 200 or 50 years ago, perhaps even 20 years ago. All systems evolve and transform over time to be able to adapt to constant change. A key problem with the political system in the United States is that fundamentally it is the same system as it was when George Washington was president. It was designed to slow down decision-making to insure that the principle of “sovereignty of the people” limited the power of government. When mass communication and the Internet emerged, it created a context of real time, exponential change. As a result, our representative system of government began to struggle to deal with complexities of the society that did not previously exist. Added to this concern is that Americans do not see themselves represented by either of the major parties and, therefore, hold a high level of distrust for elected officials who, too often, have replaced rampant self-interest for the common good.

We believe that we are in transition from an industrial society to an ecological one in which deep collaboration and interdependency increasingly will be required. Until recently leaders searched for and believed that there was “one best answer” to every problem. This reflected the Industrial Age’s emphasis on efficiency and standardization. As the pace of the society and economy grew faster and faster due to the impacts of emerging radical technologies, faster travel and real-time communication, the interaction of multiple factors now predominates. Yet we are not prepared for a time that is increasingly fast-paced, interconnected and complex. All citizens are searching for new ways to feel that they can make an impact as traditional forms and methods are increasingly obsolete.

We believe that Americans want to have access to the right information at the right times in order to make informed choices. There is a strong sense that interest groups, lobbyists and the wealthy have too much influence. We propose that elected officials and citizens work together to reconceptualize how to design a system of broader and effective citizen involvement in an ongoing “futures generative dialog” that uses the power of transformational thinking and the web to co-create and birth of a new concept of the common good for the 21st century.

Question 2: In America’s first elections, the population of the nation was around three million people; less than 2% of them could vote – only white, male property owners. Today, in a population of roughly three hundred million, over two hundred million can vote. This increases the gap between people and their politicians, and makes responsive democracy seem out of reach. What’s the way forward?

Answer: We believe that in order to reenergize our democracy, we need to rethink how to close the gap between citizens and their elected officials. Although not necessarily advocating for direct or referendum focused democracy , we do believe that new systems of decision making will need to emerge over time in order to balance the needs of adapting to constant change, co-creating new ideas, and insuring the ability to make appropriate real time decisions as fast as possible.

For example, many, if not most politicians, base their policy initiatives on polling data. It’s been our experience that policy that is driven and created from back and forth dialog is the best way to come to consensus and set the stage for decision making. For issues that are extremely complex we recommend something we call Future’s Generative Dialog that builds capacities for transformation over time by seeding new ways of thinking and acting in the short-run.

The next step in democracy is Polycentric Democracy that connects networks and allows for free thinking groups to come up with original solutions. In a Polycentric Democracy, instead of networks of lobbyists and single-issue interest groups working on specific, predetermined goals, we see interlocking networks and ecosystems of diverse people and groups coming together to work on emerging issues that will be increasingly complex.

Question 3: What do you see as the role of local community governments in the future?

Answer: Local government has a responsibility to be the first responders to public challenges. It is our view that local elected officials should also be held accountable for sensing, anticipating and preparing new ways to deal with emerging issues within a “futures context”, not just reacting to existing, full blown problems.

At the local and the national level, we foresee self-organizing groups of citizens forming together to dialog about and recommend imaginative approaches to deal with emerging issues. At the local level especially, we see amazing opportunities for elected officials to tap into the desire of citizens to undertake research and development and create a “citizen’s congress of the future” to identify the most important issues of concern for today as well as the emerging future.

Locally elected leaders need to be facilitators and bridge builders more than they need to be autocrats or generals leading a charge. The more brains involved in parallel decision-making processes for current issues and future capacities for transformation, the better.

Question 4: At the local level, what skills will future leaders need?

Answer: Future leaders at the local and the national level are going to need to develop the abilities and skills we call “master capacity builders,” such as: how to identify “weak signals” before they become trends; how to seed new ways of transformational thinking and action; how to design a system of parallel processes where “capacities for transformation” are created.

A society that is evolving from a structure of hierarchies, standard answers and predictability to one that is based on interlocking networks, multiple outcomes and a comfort with ambiguity and uncertainty, will increasingly demand thinker who can process diverse and often opposing information and make sense of it, as well as facilitators of transformational change able to connect disparate ideas, people and processes.

Also, leaders will need to be able develop the skills and techniques of “adaptive planning” when tangible strategic planning is not possible, and understand the role of networks whose connections lead to multiple outcomes and truths. Effective decision making in the future will take into account as many perspectives as possible.

Question 5: How do we get from here to there?

Answer: Our society and our economy are both changing too fast to be able to determine where “there” is more than one year out in most cases. And people are ready for change. They know the current political system of checks and balances, factional and ideological conflict is not working. We believe, more than any other time in American history people are fed up with elected officials and the network of lobbyists and wealthy special interest groups who have an outsized influence on politics.

It is time to let democracy evolve and acknowledge that ordinary residents have amazing access to information and can be engaged to help solve the most complex issues. For too long information was the ultimate powerbroker. Now with a few clicks on a search engine, one can learn and share thoughtful original research, and can dialog with neighbors near and far. It’s essential we connect this creative activity with our government’s decision-making processes. This will promote insight and innovation to our design of our collective future.

We see this transformation leading to a new emerging civilization, an ecological civilization. Not one defined by hierarchies and bureaucracies, but one that is interconnected, informed, imaginative, and in which all citizens are working to co-create their future.

Some things that we see happening are increasingly elegant ways that government is bringing people together to deal with increased complexity, whether using large-scale citizen input processes as was done focusing the vision on how to rebuild the World Trade Center complex, renew New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, or redesign parallel processes to rethink the future of education that is happening at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, NC.

We are working with local government leaders in Washington DC and elsewhere on how to engage people authentically in the very beginning of campaigns and how to keep them engaged over time. Of special interest is helping smaller communities learn how to prepare for a different kind of future.

Sh*t’s Bad Right Now, So Here’s A Short Story About A Rescued Cat

2016-07-21-1469123925-9440893-lauren1.jpeg

Shit’s kind of heavy for all of us right now, and we have a long road ahead, but I thought maybe, just maybe, you’d like five minutes of light reading about how I saved a cat and she saved me.

Her name is FatFace.

She’s been feral for at least five years and she has three teeth and she weighs under five pounds.

2016-07-21-1469123962-4057465-lauren2.jpeg

FatFace was part of a feral colony my neighbor took care of, and which I’ve subsequently taken over after my neighbor moved across town.

I enjoy our cat colony, which totals between 10-12 mostly black or Russian blue cats, but let me tell you something about taking care of cat colonies: Don’t publicly share that info at parties. One time I was at a networking event and met a handful of interesting people and had to stop this sentence from coming out of my mouth: “Oh, man. I have to get going! My cat colony is going to be piiiiissed if I don’t get home soon for feed time.”

(Side note: Our colony is fixed and if any genitalia-sporting cats come into the colony, my former neighbor traps them and gets them fixed through the Austin Humane Society’s trap-neuter-release program.)

2016-07-21-1469124003-4024795-lauren3.jpeg

FatFace was one of the oldest cats in the colony, and like most of the other ferals, she was terrified of us. Most of her time was spent hiding under the neighbor’s house or keeping herself at a distance, squinting, watching our every move. However, we took a shine to the little goober because of her tiny stature and her expressive face. When I acquired the colony and discovered she only had three teeth, I began feeding her soft food.

2016-07-21-1469124049-7101457-lauren5.jpeg

Over the course of nine months, FatFace went from eating soft food we left out, to letting us get very close to her, to letting us touch her, to letting us brush her, to letting us pet her. Now I’m happy to say she lives in our house and enjoys sleeping on my butt and sniffing my armpits. She also enjoys curling up like a tiny donut.

2016-07-21-1469124111-559913-lauren6.png

Here are some other fun fact about FatFace:

She’s between 5-10 years old.

We called her “he” for five years until I asked my vet to check out her netherparts.

She also likes to sleep on my chest and stare at me from about two-to-three inches from my face.

She does not like to be picked up; she makes this pathetic “muu-annn” sound when you do it.

She doesn’t like fancy-ass soft food; she likes good-ol’ mystery meat from Friskies.

We’ve managed to put one pound on her; she now weighs over five pounds.

My bf thinks she is part dwarf cat.

She has mouth herpes.

She loves when you push on her nose really hard. She gets so into it that she might bite your face.

She doesn’t mind if you scratch her stomach — but not the feet.

She’s a very affectionate, chill cat. Even when she’s ready to party at 3AM or eat at 7AM, she just stares at us or head bunts us.

She’s kind of a slob. Because she has mouth herpes and few teeth, she can’t eat or groom well. Most of the time we get salmon sneezes all over our faces.

During the day, I’ll lay on the bed next to her and instantly fall asleep.

At night time I can no longer get work done because she sleeps on my neck.

She’s very much loved by us.

2016-07-21-1469124146-6102112-lauren7.jpeg

I’ve never owned a cat before, and I never thought I could love a cat as much as I do. She has brought great joy to my life, and I hope I bring joy to hers.

Eugene Monroe Retires Early Over Concussion Fears

Seven-year NFL veteran Eugene Monroe announced his retirement from the league Thursday on The Players’ Tribune. In a blog post, he cited concerns that the game was affecting his brain and mental health as the main reason for hanging up his cleats at the age of 29.

“My wife used to joke about the ‘little things I forget,’” wrote Monroe, who played left tackle for the Baltimore Ravens for his final three seasons. “Things like that were just a joke around the house until this past winter, when my four-year-old daughter said, ‘Daddy you don’t remember anything!’”

By retiring due to mental health concerns explicitly, Monroe joins a growing list of former NFL players who put their brains before their money, including Buffalo Bills linebacker A.J. Tarpley and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland. The primary fear of these players is developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a degenerative brain disease cause by repeated hits to the head, which can only be diagnosed after death. According to Boston researchers, the disease was found in 87 of the 91 deceased former NFL players that were tested.

“The last 18 years have been full of traumatic injuries to both my head and my body,” Monroe wrote in The Players’ Tribune. He attributed those injuries to a “never-ending cycle” that seems to be the norm for most players in the NFL: “injury, shake it off, ‘recover,’ repeat.”

Monroe admitted that his decision might be perplexing to many people, but added, “I am thinking of my family first right now — and my health and my future.”

Preparing for a Trump Presidency

2016-07-20-1469042466-3000370-download.jpg

Although we progressives don’t like to contemplate the prospect of a Trump presidency, it would be wise to at least be prepared for such an eventuality, especially since polls show Clinton and Trump in a virtual tie. (Clinton is still favored roughly 60-40 in Nate Silver’s 531 analysis, down from 75-25 about a month ago). Even if Trump loses, the dynamics of American politics and government will have changed considerably, and progressives need to think about how to deal with those changed dynamics.

There are obvious dangers for progressive policies with Trump in the White House. Clearly, Trump will go after Obamacare, tighten immigration policies and promote a law and order crackdown. If the Republicans retain the Senate – the House is pretty much guaranteed to remain Republican through 2012 because of gerrymandering – then Obamacare will likely be repealed, although it is unclear how quickly it will be replaced and with what.

Depending on the nature of Trump’s anti-immigrant proposals, they are likely to be blocked by a Democratic Senate, or even watered down by a Republican Senate. However, Trump could go the executive order route, in which case Democrats would find themselves taking a similar tactic against Trump’s executive orders as the Republicans took against Obama’s actions. Trump might also use executive orders in law-and-order initiatives if his proposals risk running afoul of the Constitution or the Democratic Senate.

If incidents of domestic and foreign terrorism increase – as they are likely to — a Trump administration might attempt a crackdown on civil liberties, which would certainly provoke a fight from progressives and even some libertarians on the right. However, since Trump is skilled at stoking public fears, he could probably succeed in winning over public support for limits on speech and movement, as well as beefed-up surveillance of suspect communities.

Another, less obvious but equally important outcome of a Trump presidency could be a severe economic decline. Most of Trump’s trade and tax policies, not to mention the volatility of his personality and the political instability he represents, would likely impact economic growth and faith in the American economy. This could lead to more inflation, loss of jobs and financial instability. To counter these adverse economic effects that would hit middle-class, working-class and minority communities the hardest, progressives might have to make political alliances with some strange bedfellows – particularly the business community and big banks – who strongly oppose Trump’s damaging economic proposals.

Similarly, Trump’s nationalist and isolationist foreign policy could create lots of problems in our relations with other countries. His anti-China rants could conceivably lead to a trade war with China, our biggest creditor, and severely impact not only our economy, but also our national deficit and fiscal stability. And his get-tough attitude towards terrorism, as well as his “you-gotta-pay” approach to our allies, threatens to destabilize the globe. Here again, progressives may have to line up with a more globalist and interventionist world view to combat the xenophobic isolationism of Trump.

Obviously, Trump’s personality – which has been a central focus of both of his campaign and of the Clinton campaign – will be critical in any Trump administration. It is probably inevitable that he will commit offenses that would be regarded as impeachable by many in Congress, and therefore it is important for progressives to think about how they might position themselves in an impeachment proceeding. Simple revenge or retribution cannot be the theme of an impeachment, as the Republicans learned from the Clinton impeachment.

There may a few – very few – positives for progressives in a Trump presidency. For one thing, he has soundly rejected both establishment Republican and Tea Party orthodoxy, which may be good news for pro-choice supporters and those who support higher taxes on the wealthy. He also may be softer on climate change, bank regulation and other traditional conservative positions than either the establishment or Tea Party factions. However, the racism and xenophobia of his core supporters will spell trouble for minority communities, immigrants and other progressive constituencies.

Even if Trump loses, the political landscape will have changed dramatically. It is unlikely – even with a Democratic Senate and White House – that immigration reform, universal health care, strong environmental rules, increased taxes on the wealthy, infrastructure and education spending or a boatload of other progressive programs will make it into law. There will be an opportunity to change the direction of the country after the 2020 Census by correcting the Republican gerrymandering that will guarantee a Republican House until 2012. In the meantime, progressives would have to continue their uphill battle.
