Trump, Clinton: Racial Stalemate Or Unfair Fight

2016-08-27-1472317428-4602998-ObamaPhiladelphia2008.jpg

(Barack Obama, speaking of race, in Philadelphia, March 18, 2008)

In the midst of his first campaign for president, Barack Obama was forced to explain his long association with a pastor spotlighted for racially incendiary remarks from the pulpit of an African American church in Chicago.

“The anger is real,” Obama said then, speaking not only of the “memories of humiliation and doubt and fear” that the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s generation raised amid racial segregation still bear. He addressed “a similar anger” among white Americans who’ve worked hard yet “feel their dreams slipping away” only to see “an African American is getting an advantage in landing a good job or a spot in a good college because of an injustice that they themselves never committed…

“Opportunity comes to be seen as a zero sum game, in which your dreams come at my expense,” candidate Obama said in Philadelphia, in March 2008, with words that still apply near the close of his second term. “This is where we are right now. It’s a racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years. Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naïve as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy – particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own.”

The president, his public job approval riding above 50 percent in his final year, will return to Philadelphia in September, this time campaigning for his intra-party rival in that 2008 campaign, Hillary Clinton, immersed now in countervailing accusations of bigotry and racism in a contest with Republican Donald Trump.

“From the start, Donald Trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia,” Clinton said in a multi-faceted assault on Trump’s lack of character or qualification for the nation’s highest office delivered this week in Reno. “He’s taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over one of America’s two major political parties,” she said of “a man with a long history of racial discrimination, who traffics in dark conspiracy theories drawn from the pages of supermarket tabloids and the far reaches of the Internet.”

And with the hiring of campaign CEO Stephen Bannon, publisher of the breitbart.com site favored by the “Alt-Right” – which the Wall Street Journal describes as a mostly online movement that “rejects mainstream conservatism, promotes nationalism and views immigration and multiculturalism as threats to white identity” – Clinton suggested that “the de facto merger between Breitbart and the Trump campaign represents a landmark achievement for the Alt-Right. A fringe element has effectively taken over the Republican Party.”

“It’s the oldest play in the Democratic playbook,” Trump complained in his own attempt at a prebuttal in Manchester, N.H., before Clinton’s address in Nevada. “When Democratic policies fail, they are left with only this one tired argument: ‘You’re racist, you’re racist, you’re racist.’ It’s a tired disgusting argument.”

For a couple of weeks now, in an attempt to convince moderate swing voters that he is not a racist, Trump has made an odd appeal to African American voters who tend to vote 9-1 Democratic in presidential contests: “What the Hell have you got to lose?” It’s Clinton, he contends, who views black Americans simply as votes to be won, and he argues that for generations “millions of African-American and Hispanic-American citizens… have been betrayed by Democratic policies.”

Yet this war of words is not merely another manifestation of the “racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years,” as Obama put it. Some contend that the reporting of the week’s cross-fire between the candidates – which continues on Twitter and will loom large in the Sunday morning talk shows – is actually purveying a “false equivalency.” The idea here is that Clinton actually possesses far more ammunition in her case against Trump than he holds in his claim that she’s “a bigot.”

And it’s no coincidence that Trump is launching his first appeal to minorities at a juncture in which Clinton has gained a double-digit lead in some national polls.

“I think Trump is fairly desperate at this point and to a certain extent has painted himself into a corner,” says Carl Tobias, professor of law at the University of Richmond. “His outreach to African Americans seems to ring hollow, and once Obama is out there talking, that is sure to help Clinton in a lot of ways, certainly with that constituency.”

In a contest dominated by two of the most unpopular nominees in the history of modern opinion polling, there may be little gain for either in a debate on racism.

“I think everybody all the way around is going to hold their noses and vote, which is unfortunate,” Tobias says. “I think people almost stop listening at this point. I don’t know where the high ground is, but nobody seems to be on it.”

Trump arrived at this fight with a history of questionable acts and remarks. In November 2014, the Twitter aficionado tweeted this about the president: “Sadly, because president Obama has done such a poor job as president, you won’t see another black president for generations!” Asked by ABC News’ Jonathan Karl at the time what he meant by that, Trump said: “He has set a very poor standard. I think that he has set a very low bar and I think it’s a shame for the African American people… And by the way, he has done nothing for African Americans.”

Before that, Trump was among the highest-profile and most vocal proponents of the rumor that Obama is not a naturally born American citizen. Clinton running mate Tim Kaine, campaigning on the campus of historically black Florida A&M University the day after the Trump-Clinton exchange over racism, said: “Donald Trump was a main guy behind the scurrilous, and I would say bigoted, notion that President Obama wasn’t even born in this country.”

The actual accusation of racism reached its highest volume in the campaign underway after Trump accused the federal judge handling a lawsuit alleging fraud at Trump University of bias because he’s “a Mexican” and Trump wants to build a border wall against illegal immigration. It was the Republican Party’s own House Speaker Paul Ryan who delivered the strongest rebuke of Trump’s remark about Judge Gonzalo Curiel, a Mexican-American born in Indiana who has fought Mexican drug cartels as a prosecutor. Ryan said: “Claiming a person can’t do their job is sort of the like the textbook definition of a racist comment.”

Trump also has seized upon some stray Clinton comments to make his case for bigotry. “Hillary Clinton needs to address the racist undertones of her 2008 campaign,” he tweeted to his 11 million followers on Friday, offering a video montage of news clippings. In one, Clinton is pictured on an old episode of NBC News’ “Meet the Press” delivering a speech in which she said: “Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act.” In that clip, it’s the late host Tim Russert who suggests to Clinton: “It’s as if you are minimizing, ‘I have a dream.’ It’s a nice sentiment, but it took a white president to get blacks to the mountaintop.” The comment goes unanswered by Clinton.

It was during her contest against Obama in the 2008 Democratic primaries that Clinton suggested that Obama is an eloquent speaker lacking a record of action and it’s proven political leaders who’ve brought about real change. “I would point to the fact that that Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when he was able to get through Congress something that President Kennedy was hopeful to do, the president before had not even tried, but it took a president to get it done,” she said. “That dream became a reality, the power of that dream became real in people’s lives because we had a president who said we are going to do it and actually got it accomplished.”

Obama was forced to deny that his campaign was circulating the remark to rally black voters. “Senator Clinton made an unfortunate remark, an ill-advised remark, about King and Lyndon Johnson. I didn’t make the statement,” Obama told reporters. “I haven’t remarked on it, and she, I think, offended some folks who felt that somehow diminished King’s role in bringing about the Civil Rights Act. She is free to explain that, but the notion that somehow this is our doing is ludicrous.”

Trump is playing another remark attributed third-hand and without direct quotation to Bill Clinton. Two years after that 2008 campaign, in their book Game Change, John Heilemann and Mark Halperin reported about the former president attempting to convince Sen. Ted Kennedy to support Hillary Clinton. “Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.” In the years since, the unattributed comment has been repeated in news accounts as an alleged direct quote.

Then there is the business of the “super predators,” which Trump is replaying online. “How quickly people forget that Crooked Hillary called African-American youth SUPER PREDATORS’ – has she apologized?” Trump tweeted this week. In the 1990s, after President Clinton won passage of the Violent Crime Control Act, the first lady warned in a 1996 speech of “the kinds of kids that are called ‘super predators…’ no conscience, no empathy, we can talk about why they ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel.” In this year’s Democratic primaries, Bernie Sanders took issue with the remark: “It was a racist term,” he said in their final debate, “and everybody knew it was a racist term.” Clinton later allowed: “I shouldn’t have used those words, and I wouldn’t use them today.”

“The Clinton’s are the real predators,” Trump has tweeted.

For her part, Clinton claims Trump has demeaned the African American community with his portrayal of black neighborhoods as “war zones.”

“He doesn’t see the success of black leaders in every field… the vibrancy of black-owned businesses… or the strength of the black church,” she said in Reno. “He doesn’t see the excellence of historically black colleges and universities or the pride of black parents watching their children thrive…And he certainly doesn’t have any solutions to take on the reality of systemic racism and create more equity and opportunity in communities of color.”

She has reached far back into the billionaire’s own business career to portray a record of racism. “When Trump was getting his start in business, he was sued by the Justice Department for refusing to rent apartments to black and Latino tenants,” she said. “Their applications would be marked with a “C” – ”C” for “colored” – and then rejected.”

The New York Times reports that the legacy of discrimination in Trump housing developments started with the developer’s father. In the 1960s, as Civil Rights legislation was advancing in Washington, the Times reports: “Over the next decade, as Donald Trump assumed an increasingly prominent role in the business, the company’s practice of turning away potential black tenants was painstakingly documented by activists and organizations that viewed equal housing as the next frontier in the civil rights struggle. The Justice Department undertook its own investigation and, in 1973, sued Trump Management for discriminating against blacks. Both Fred Trump, the company’s chairman, and Donald Trump, its president, were named as defendants. “Absolutely ridiculous,” the son said.

“When it was over,” The Times reports today, “Mr. Trump declared victory, emphasizing that the consent decree he ultimately signed did not include an admission of guilt.” But the paper’s investigation – ”drawing on decades-old files from the New York City Commission on Human Rights, internal Justice Department records, court documents and interviews with tenants, civil rights activists and prosecutors – uncovered a long history of racial bias at his family’s properties, in New York and beyond.”

“It takes a lot of nerve to ask people he’s ignored and mistreated for decades, ‘What do you have to lose?'” Clinton said this week. “The answer is everything!”

Clinton went on to enumerate the support Trump has attracted from white nationalists such as David Duke, whose backing Trump took some time to disavow. She spoke of Trump’s plans for a religious test for Muslims entering the United States – a requirement to disavow Sharia law. “Under Donald Trump, America would distinguish itself as the only country in the world to impose a religious test at the border,” she said. “Come to think of it, there actually may be one place that does that. It’s the so-called Islamic State.”

And finally, Clinton says, Trump’s campaign is being run by the publisher of a platform, Breitbart, which the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as embracing “ideas on the extremist fringe of the conservative right. Racist ideas. Race-baiting ideas. Anti-Muslim and anti-Immigrant ideas – all key tenets making up an emerging racist ideology known as the ‘Alt-Right.'”

“There’s an old Mexican proverb that says, ‘Tell me with whom you walk, and I will tell you who you are,” Clinton said. “We know who Trump is. A few words on a teleprompter won’t change that. He says he wants to ‘make America great again,’ but his real message remains ‘Make America hate again.”‘

Obama, who plans to campaign for Clinton in Philadelphia on Sept. 13, went there in March 2008 to disavow the comments of a pastor he’d known for years – while standing by the man himself and offering a social context for his sentiments.

This time, Obama plans to speak of Clinton’s ideas for improving the economy. But his words from 2008 still resonate today.

“Race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now,” he said then. “We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America – to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality.”

Ironically, Obama in 2008 took a turn at describing the very electorate to whom Trump has appealed in his own campaign for president this year:

“Most working- and middle-class white Americans don’t feel that they have been particularly privileged by their race,” Obama said then. “Their experience is the immigrant experience – as far as they’re concerned, no one handed them anything. They built it from scratch. They’ve worked hard all their lives, many times only to see their jobs shipped overseas or their pensions dumped after a lifetime of labor. They are anxious about their futures, and they feel their dreams slipping away…

“Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the real culprits of the middle class squeeze – a corporate culture rife with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices and short-term greed; a Washington dominated by lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many,” Obama said in Philadelphia. “And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns – this too widens the racial divide and blocks the path to understanding.”

Thought-Provoking Questions

Often, when I am booked for lectures or radio and television interviews, I am provided questions in advance to help me prepare. Some of the questions are provocative, the kind that make me stop and think. So much so, I am sharing a few here with my replies.

1. What are three principles you live by?
a) “Identify the fear and then go there.” Usually I’m afraid because it is something I have never done before, and so I figure I will at least learn something new. I always ask myself: What is the worst-case scenario? If it’s one I can deal with, I go for it.
b) “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” Being stuck striving for perfection will not allow you to move on. For me, this pertains to writing. It is never finished and can always be improved upon. But at some point, it must be abandoned. Of course, this does not apply to everything; be sure to use discernment.
c) “Maintain an open mind.” I try to not be judgmental or assume that I know best. I listen and attempt to understand other points of view, seeing them in the contexts of culture and personality. When presented with a new opportunity, I ask myself: Will I learn something?

2. Do you believe nature or nurture has more impact?
People are born with specific tendencies; some children are shy, some are outgoing. This is a natural component of our genes, but then life experiences also impact our brains. Successes can reinforce behavior while failures discourage future attempts. So it is both. First it is nature, then nurture. Both have an equal influence.

3. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
I wish I had not cared so much about what other people thought of me. As women, we try to please others more than necessary. Speak the truth as often as possible and be willing to be disliked, but respected.

4. What did you wish to be when you were a child?
My childhood dream was to be a poet. I won a poetry contest for a poem I wrote when I was eight. This early success inspired me to continue writing poems, which I still do today.

5. What role does luck play in success?
Obviously, luck plays a part–you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people. However, success is also “opportunity meeting preparation.” I am always scanning my environment to look for ways to make a contribution and a difference.

6. What are the barriers to female leadership?
“MEN!” There is still gender discrimination, both conscious and unconscious, even by well-meaning men. Our culture continues to be dominated by male values, and, in the majority of cases, even when shown the same resume with a male or female name, men are chosen over women for both promotions and as new hires.

7. What was your biggest challenge?
a) Acceptance. As the only woman on the faculty of a business school, the first woman in a Rotary Club, the only female consultant in all-male organizations, I faced issues of acceptance. I did not try to blend in, as I knew this was not possible, so I stood out by wearing red suits, sitting on the arms of chairs to make me look taller (I am barely 5 feet tall).
b) A close second was being ignored–not only feeling invisible, but, also, not heard, and (when earned) not rewarded.

8. What changes in the workplace would you like to see?
I would like to see flexible working hours as a norm at work. This would permit time off not only for child-related needs, but, also, for the increasing needs of aging parents. Men must be provided with the same opportunity to take an equal share of these responsibilities without negative consequences in the workplace. What do you attribute your success to?
The willingness to ask the first question, using an assertive voice, looking others in the eye while conversing, giving credit when credit is due, looking and sounding confident (even when I do not feel that way), being well-prepared by knowing the agenda and relevant facts, and lastly, believing in myself.

9. What are the three rules you live by?
a) First of all, have fun. b) Do no harm. c) Be as helpful to as many people as possible.
I am urging you, my readers, to do the same. Think of each question as it relates to you, your values, philosophies, experiences, your life overall. Take time to answer these questions honestly and you might gain new insights–perhaps discover some unconscious motivations.

Here’s What Parents Of Kids With Life-Threatening Allergies Think Of The EpiPen Price Increases

Jennifer DiMercurio’s 7-year-old son, Liam, relies on the EpiPen, an auto injector used to treat anaphylactic shock, to save his life in the case of a severe allergic reaction. The device delivers a dose of epinephrine that’s worth about $ 1. But over the past nine years, Mylan, the pharmaceutical company which makes the EpiPen, has increased the price of the patented injecting device from $ 100 to $ 600.

That increase put the DiMercurios in a bind. In January 2015, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job that didn’t include health insurance. The family turned to the private market, where they found a plan that would cover Liam and Jennifer, who had developed a Latex allergy ― but it had a hefty deductible. So on two occasions, after using up their stash to save each others’ lives, the family had to borrow funds from relatives to replace their EpiPens.

This summer, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job ― one that came with good health insurance. But the family couldn’t afford to buy the year’s EpiPens until the new insurance kicked in.

So for four months, they had to rely on expired models.

“I was scared to take my son out, especially as summer was coming ― even at the grocery store I’d be more worried and more on alert because I’ll be afraid,” DiMercurio said. “Especially having to use them myself I’ve seen now how important it is to use it quickly and how fast it happens, and you don’t know if your pen is going to work because it’s expired.”

Presidential candidates, politicians and the press have spent the past week slamming Mylan for the price increases. Since no rival generic products have Food and Drug Administration approval, Mylan has an almost complete monopoly. Mylan’s CEO Heather Bresch, who is the daughter of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), announced Thursday that the company would not cut the price of the injectors, but would increase the maximum it would offer to families in its copay assistance program from $ 100 to $ 300.

Parents of children with life-threatening allergies are still worried.

“So many of us are wondering if we’re going to be able to pay our mortgage if we pay for the pens,” DiMercurio said. “It’s bad enough when kids’ lives are lost just because they didn’t use an EpiPen quickly enough, but to not have it for a financial reason is despicable. It’s all we have and Mylan monopolized the market.”

FINANCIAL SACRIFICE

Aleasa Word, a working single mom in Atlanta, started saving last September to buy enough EpiPens for her two kids with food allergies to make it through the school year. The packs expire, so they need to be replaced each year, even if they aren’t used. Even with her insurance, a two-pack of EpiPens (they’re only sold in sets of two) costs her about $ 600, and she needs four packs to cover both her children ― one for each of them to carry, and one for each of them to have at school.

That comes out to a total of $ 2,400.

“I am willing to sacrifice whatever I need to sacrifice to get my children their medication,” Word said. “EpiPen is not optional in my house. I can’t not have it.”

Joy Velozo, a mother from Massachusetts, said she worries about the impact the price increase has on families that can no longer afford them. Her son, who will be 12 at the end of the month, is allergic to all nuts, eggs and shellfish. He has been home-schooled since last year in part because his local school would not guarantee that he would not be exposed to allergens in the upper classes, where students switch desks and classrooms throughout the day.

“I can’t imagine having to pay full price to have four sets of EpiPens to know he was covered in every situation,” she said.

Julianne DeNicola’s 7-year-old son, Joseph, died after he came into contact with pizza oil that had touched cheese ― enough to set off his extreme dairy allergy. Although his father administered an EpiPen shortly after his reaction, Joseph didn’t get the drug fast enough.

“This isn’t just an over-the-counter product,” DeNicola said. “This is Russian Roulette. You can’t put a price tag on life.”

DeNicola said she has talked to other parents who say they have been forced to choose between a mortgage payment, putting aside money for college tuition, or buying a new set of EpiPens.

RISING RISKS

Other parents told HuffPost they’d heard of families splitting packs ― one EpiPen for home, one to carry ― as the cost of EpiPens has risen. This is dangerous. EpiPens are sold in packs of two in case someone needs more than one dose or the first EpiPen fails to deploy due to user error.

The possibility that more families could end up splitting the EpiPen packs terrifies Georgina Cornago Cipriano. She became an food allergy activist after her 14-year-old son, Giovanni, accidentally ingested something with peanuts and died.

“It’s becoming a luxury to be able to have an EpiPen. There are people that have multiple children with food allergies ― how can you afford them?” Cipriano asked. “You have to have more than one set. And you have to have two everywhere you go ― you never know if the first one could malfunction. You don’t know if the first one is going to be enough.”

When asked about families splitting the packs, DiMercurio said that she once had to use two of the EpiPens at the same time on her own son to get his reaction under control. But she’s had to rely on expired pens herself, so she understands the inclination to cut corners for cost.

THE NECESSITY FOR ACCESS

In September 2013, Josephine Espinosa’s 13-year-old son Cameron was bitten by a swarm of fire ants during a football huddle in Corpus Christi, Texas. He’d had no previous allergy issues ― much like 25 percent of children who suffer their first allergic reaction in school ― but the mix of ant bites and adrenaline caused a severe allergic reaction that killed him.

The school did not have an EpiPen on hand, which Josephine believes could have saved his life.

“Once I found out an EpiPen could have saved my son, I knew I had to do something so that other parents don’t have to go through what we go through every day,” Espinosa said.

Last summer, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed Senate Bill 66, known as the Cameron Espinosa Act, into law, which requires public and charter schools in Texas to stock EpiPens and train staff on how to use them. Last school year was the first the law went into effect.

“It does give me a little peace of mind that [this is the law in Texas],” Espinosa said. “This is a nightmare, every day is a struggle. No parent should have to go through that.”

Eleven states in the country require all schools to carry EpiPens. The law in Texas does not apply to private schools.

Many emergency vehicles do not carry EpiPens or epinephrine on board. And many basic emergency medical technicians do not have access or may not be allowed to administer anything other than the patient’s own EpiPen, according to Food Allergy Research & Education, a nonprofit that advocates for the 15 million Americans who suffer from food allergies.

THE FEAR NEVER GOES AWAY

Parents of children with food allergies wonder every day if they’re going to get a phone call saying their child is having a life-threatening reaction, Velozo said.

The parents of those who have lost a child “are like the salespeople for EpiPens,” DeNicola said. “We’re the advocates on why they need to have it.”

“We walk on land mines every single day,” said Word, who organizes Love Remembers Day, an annual commemoration for those who have lost a loved one to food-induced anaphylaxis.

“I hate to get the phone call, I hate to get the emails,” she said. “And I don’t want to have a conversation on Love Remembers Day, and it’s because someone couldn’t afford their EpiPen.”

Diabetes brought big changes for eleven-year-old Adair and his family. He learned to prick himself to test his blood-sugar level and got used to two insulin shots a day. A true story about a boy who has learned to manage his illness and continues to do the things he loves.

Attention, World: Chelsea Handler Is Set To Interview Ann Coulter

Chelsea Handler is making our dreams come true and will interview Ann Coulter within the next three weeks, she told The Huffington Post.

The comedian and talk show host extraordinaire explained to host Alyona Minkovski on Thursday that she “might have to bring in the big guns” when she interviews the conservative commentator on her Netflix show, “Chelsea.”

“Intellectually, I don’t think I can match her, but I mean, I like anybody with a difference of opinion,” Handler said. “I like conflict and I’m not averse to that. I like having conversations that are uncomfortable.”

Handler, an outspoken liberal, answered a resounding “no” when asked whether she liked Coulter’s views, as one might expect. Coulter is “good at eliciting that feeling of grossness inside,” Handler added.

Who’s The Boss In Your Relationship?

At a recent dinner party, I witnessed a group of friends teasingly ask one another who was in charge in their relationship. The question was meant to be playfully provocative, with most people laughing as everyone else at the table shouted, often in unison, who they perceived as being the boss. “Well, he decides when they go out, but she decides everything else.” Or “She sounds like the bossy one, but he’s running the show behind the scenes.” Sometimes, the couple themselves would chime in, with one person claiming, “I wear the pants in this relationship!” and the other rolling their eyes as if to say “you wish that were true.” While the whole conversation was meant in good fun, and the sheer lightheartedness of the friends’ tone made me doubt any of them would seriously condone any power dynamic operating in a relationship, they were actually hitting on some serious issues that exist between most couples.

Culturally, it seems we’ve grown a little too relaxed about accepting that one person is the boss or in control of certain aspects of an adult romantic relationship. Equality is one of the most important elements of a successful relationship, and yet, countless couples fall into dynamics and roles that are inherently unequal. One person tends to be more childish, the other more parental, one more submissive, the other more dominating.

Very often, individuals are drawn to these roles, because on an unconscious level, they allow us to play out dynamics from our past that are familiar, and therefore, in some ways, make us more comfortable. For example, if we felt like we didn’t have a voice in our family, we may choose a partner who speaks for us. We may even find ourselves being much quieter around our partner, thus encouraging them to represent us. If we grew up in a family that made us feel incompetent, like we couldn’t do things for ourselves, we may have the tendency to act helpless with our partner. We may find ourselves struggling with simple tasks and depending on our partner to take care of us. Conversely, if we grew up feeling rejected or like we had to take care of ourselves, we may find ourselves seeking control anywhere we can find it. We may not easily trust others, and we may try to control our partners’ movement to help us feel more at ease in the relationship.

Each of these scenarios can lead to a pattern of behavior with our partner in which one of us becomes like a parent and the other a child. Without knowing it, we tend to play out a half of the dynamic that provokes our partner to play out the other half. Although, we may regret these ways of relating, we’re actually helping to create them. Again, it may not feel pleasant, but it often feels familiar. While it isn’t a conscious process, for many people, feeling like we either have control or have someone else to control us relieves our anxiety or insecurity.

Although, we’re initially attracted to these roles as a means to make us feel more comfortable or secure, these power dynamics tend to generate a lot of tension and conflict in our relationships. They may lead to arguments and actual contempt, or they may subtly subdue our feelings of love and attraction. When we start to overstep each other’s boundaries and stop treating each other like two separate people with two sovereign minds, we can seriously diminish our own feelings of respect and attraction toward our partner. When one person is exercising control over the other, we tend to experience less loving interactions in which we really see and feel seen by our partner. We start to replace substance with form, imposing expectations and routines on each other, rather than accepting a more natural give and take that characterizes an equal, adult relationship.

As these patterns develop, we may start to experience more negative emotions surrounding the relationship. If we feel like we’re in control, we’re likely to feel more critical or pressured. If we feel like our partner is in control, we may feel victimized or imposed upon. Unsurprisingly, studies have shown that having our partner exercise dominance leads to anger and resentment, while having our partner be submissive can make us feel guilty. As explained in the book Interpersonal Relationships:

Equity theory predicts that a relationship in which a partner is over-benefitted or under-benefitted will not be a happy one. Because the imbalance generates psychological distress, which erodes the relationship, under-benefitted individuals tend to feel angry, resentful and deprived. Those who are over-benefitted may feel shame, guilt and discomfort.

Based on these destructive effects, for any couple, it’s worth considering and challenging the power structures that may be in place in their relationship. It’s helpful to catch on to these patterns, many of which are characteristic of what my father Dr. Robert Firestone terms a “fantasy bond,” an illusion of connection that replaces real relating and allows couples to overstep each other’s boundaries and function as a single unit. Genuine loving actions are replaced with the form and routine of being a couple. As we develop this type of bond and see the other person as an extension of ourselves, we’re more likely to act out controlling or submissive behaviors, no longer respecting our separateness.

When we catch on to these patterns, we can break out of the power dynamics that lead to feelings of inequality in the relationship. For example, if we notice that one of us always decides where we go to dinner, we should let the other person choose. If one of us has stopped seeing friends or participating in activities we loved because of submitting to our partner’s interests, we should make a point of resuming our interests again. We should both be supportive of the things that light each other up, whether sharing these activities or enjoying them independently. Relationships stay lively and exciting when we support rather than control each other.

As we challenge ourselves to be more equal in our relationships, we’ll start to catch on to many subtle and not-so-subtle ways we may be sending messages to our partner. It’s important to recognize that it isn’t always the louder or stronger personality who’s exerting power. The one who’s yelling doesn’t necessarily control the relationship. Many people engage in passive aggressive behaviors and manipulations in an, often subconscious, effort to control their partner. Rather than overtly say what we want, we show what we want through elusive behaviors. Whether we yell at our partner or ice them, because we didn’t get our way, we’re sending a message about how we want him or her to behave. Whether we punish our partner by storming out or by falling apart, we’re likely inciting guilt that teaches the person what is and isn’t acceptable.

In every case, it’s better to be adult, that is, to be mature and direct in our communication. We should always aim to treat our partner with respect. We can create a spirit of equality by seeing each other as two whole people with our own unique points of view and desires. We can offer each other a balanced exchange of thoughts and affections, which leads to a natural give and take in the relationship.

It isn’t our duty or our right to be the boss in our relationship, even if we think we’re helping the other person by doing so. Instead, we can be a team, supporting each other in our strengths and being honest about our shortcomings. In doing so, we offer each other new possibilities, rather than limiting each other in our growth and experience. By maintaining equality, we can create a long-lasting romantic relationship, where both people feel fulfilled.

How Do EpiPens Work?

The price of EpiPens has increased more than 400 percent since 2007. People who need to keep them on hand — often because they may need the emergency drug in case they have a life-threatening allergic reaction — brought the price increase to light, and eventually it reached Congress: In a letter to Mylan, the company that makes EpiPens, Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa has now asked the company to explain its pricing.

But how do EpiPens work?

EpiPens are a type of epinephrine auto-injector, which means they work by automatically injecting a dose of the hormone epinephrine (also called adrenaline) into a person’s body. This could be done, for example, during a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. [9 Weirdest Allergies]

In a person with anaphylaxis, the immune system releases a flood of chemicals in response to an allergen, according to the Mayo Clinic. These chemicals can cause an onslaught of severe and life-threatening symptoms throughout the body, including a drop in blood pressure and constricted airways, the Mayo Clinic says.

A person can die from anaphylaxis if his or her heart stops beating or the person stops breathing. These symptoms can come on quickly, so it’s important to get a person medical treatment immediately.

Epinephrine works by reversing the symptoms of anaphylaxis. For example, a person’s blood pressure plummets during an anaphylactic reaction because the blood vessels relax and dilate — epinephrine causes the blood vessels to constrict, which raises blood pressure, according to Mylan, the maker of EpiPens.

In addition, anaphylaxis can cause a person’s airways to constrict, making it difficult for that person to breathe. Epinephrine relaxes the muscles of the airways so that the person can breathe, according to Mylan. Epinephrine also increases a person’s heart rate, which helps improve blood flow.

Creating Change: Lessons From a Private-Prison Victory

Sometimes you win.

That can be an unfamiliar sensation for people on the left. When you fight for good causes against powerful forces and overwhelming odds, you lose a lot of battles.

But sometimes you win. Take last week’s announcement from the Justice Department that it’s planning to phase out the use of for-profit prisons. Like many such victories, it is only a qualified success. But qualified success is still success.

This victory seemed politically impossible as recently as last year. What changed? Like many such victories, it began with consciousness. Attacks on the “prison industrial complex” were once considered the province of radical activists and crusading (but possibly lonely) left journalists.

Some church groups got wind of the issue in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and divested themselves of for-profit prison stock. Writers and thinkers and activists continued to shine a light on the problem. Michelle Alexander, author of “The New Jim Crow,” has been writing about this issue for years. Books like “Prison Profiteers: Who Makes Money From Mass Incarceration” explored the issue in depth.

Journalists – from the Nation, the Marshall Project, Mother Jones, and elsewhere – have continued to provide the public with more information about the problem. Activists in the communities that have suffered most from incarceration, including Black Lives Matter, fought to highlight the problem.

The idea entered the mainstream world of electoral politics last year, when Bernie Sanders made it a centerpiece of his presidential campaign. That move was met with some surprise in insider circles, since prison reform has long been considered a “hard left” issue. Progressive organizations picked up the banner.

Soon Hillary Clinton felt compelled to return the campaign contributions she had received from lobbyists who represent for-profit prisons. Within months she was telling Black Lives Matter activists that she, too, would close down for-profit prisons if she became president.

And now comes this decision from the Justice Department. This idea moved from the margins of our political discourse to its heart. In this brief history, we can see something like a life cycle begin to take shape:

An idea was brought into consciousness.

It was written about and discussed.

Then activists promoted it – in the streets, in conversations, and in organized campaigns

And it became part of an insurgent political candidacy.

Now, despite big money’s overwhelming hold on our two-party system, it has become the de facto position of the Democratic Party. Concrete action has been taken. The New York Times Editorial Board, that national arbiter of liberal thought, has echoed the message that private prisons are corrupt, violent, inefficient and wasteful.

There’s much more to be done. Only about 8 percent of federal inmates – less than 23,000 people – are housed in for-profit prisons. The vast majority of people in the for-profit prison system are incarcerated in state or local facilities, and won’t be affected by this decision. For-profit facilities for detaining immigrants – where some of the worst abuses have taken place – won’t be affected by this decision.

Profiteering will continue to impact the lives of federal prisoners through corporate ventures that medical care, phone and video calls, and even ankle bracelets.

What’s more, the affected prisoners represent a tiny fraction of the 2.2 million Americans currently in prison.

Much more needs to be done. The carceral state runs on greed, on racism, on social control, on fear and on vengeance. These forces are not easily eliminated. The commodification of human bodies, especially black and brown bodies, will continue.

But this is a victory all the same – an instructive one.

Lesson #1: We can’t depend on political leaders to change the system. Change is an inside/outside game, and it usually happens from the outside in. It took the radical visionaries, the street activists, the writers, the church groups, Bernie Sanders and the progressive organizations to make this happen. Lastly, it took insiders willing to listen and respond.

Together these forces form a kind of ecosystem. Want to change things? Find a place there and inhabit it.

Lesson #2: 23,000 prisoners are a tiny fraction of this nation’s bloated prison population. Still, an improvement to the lives of 23,000 people is worth celebrating.

That improvement is an opportunity to communicate the need for much broader change – not only in the management of our current prison population, but in the more fundamental problem of our nation’s destructive addiction to incarceration. Like all addictions, it’s a parasite that is destroying the host. When we internally colonize millions of our own people, we undermine our society from within.

This can also become a teaching moment regarding our political system’s misguided infatuation with privatization. Politicians in both parties have told us for decades that the private sector is better than government at providing many public services. Our experience with for-profit prisons has taught us otherwise, as has our experience with highways and other privatization projects.

That makes this an opportunity to renew our understanding of the social compact. It allows us to emphasize the value of communitarian idealism over individualistic greed.

The task of promoting these principles is profound, challenging, and daunting. There will be many setbacks. The moral arc of the universe may bend toward justice, but it can look more like a jagged line than a curve. If you take on this work you will lose, over and over. That’s a fact of life. But here’s another:

Sometimes you win.

What Crutches Taught Me About Life

It was a beautiful, Wednesday morning when I hobbled my way onto the campus bus and entered the Health Center. I was in a state of utter confusion and shock. Something that was just a mild discomfort the night before had turned into an unbearable pain which wouldn’t allow me to put any pressure on my left foot. I knew I had to get it checked.

As I tried urgently to get a last minute doctor’s appointment, I was forced to explain my situation again and again – to the front desk, the nurse, the other nurse, the doctor – and each time, it was the same flow, the same look of disbelief:

What’s the problem?

Well, I can’t put any weight on my left foot. (*as I’m leaning my whole body on my right side)

Might be a sprain, let’s get it looked at. What’d you do?

Umm, I landed it on it poorly while skipping.

(Look of disbelief) …did you say skipping?

Yes… skipping. I was joyfully skipping down the sidewalk.

*Chuckle* (probably laughing hysterically on the inside)

Once we got over the initial disbelief, they got me into an x-ray. An hour later, I was informed that it was just a minor ankle sprain (no broken bones), prescribed to give it some rest, and then handed a pair of crutches – for the first time in my life.

After a quick “how-to” from the nurse, I quickly crutched my way out the front doors ready to start the day. Little did I know that I was about to embark on one of the toughest, most insightful, most gratitude-inducing, perspective-changing moments of my life.

Lesson #1: We live in such an able-bodied world and we don’t even realize it.

Five minutes after I left the Health Center, I was struggling to step onto the high stairs of the campus trolley. An hour later, I was trying to wrestle open the doors to my apartment building, which were too heavy and didn’t have handicap access.  It felt as though I had just entered into an entirely different reality. I went from able-bodied to physically challenged (albeit temporarily) and suddenly the world became so much harder to deal with.

For the first time in my life, I noticed and was heavily influenced by every single building that had no elevator, all the ramps that would abruptly end and lead to stairs, doors that would have poorly placed handicap buttons where you’d have to jump out of the way to avoid getting hit. I realized just how poorly designed our world is, made entirely for people who can perfectly walk, see, hear, and smell.

What’s worse is that by having infrastructure designed only to serve those who are able-bodied, there becomes an implicit marginalization of those who are not. In order to keep up with a crowd, I would have to find elevators and ramps that were often created haphazardly or took an extra five minutes to even find. On a day-to-day basis, I found even my own friends overlooking me as I crutched along slowly from class-to-class; in many ways, the crutches became an invisibility cloak, as most people chose to ignore and walk past that which seemed abnormal.

Lesson #2: We are incredibly inefficient with our time, energy, and resources.

It was only when I could no longer walk easily that I had to learn how to optimize every aspect of my life that required movement.

Need to find a place to sit? Let me make sure that’s within a few steps of a bathroom and water fountain.

Want to hang out with a friend? Let me combine it with lunch, so they can help me carry my food.

So much attention had to be diverted on just surviving and accomplishing basic tasks like eating, going to the bathroom, and getting to class, that I realized how much energy I used to waste in making ten trips to the same place for different errands. With the luxury of being able to walk, we tend to be much less concerned with the amount of time and energy we’re wasting on a daily basis.

Lesson #3: People can be so kind and loving.

While the crutches were certainly tough and came with their frustrations, they also opened me up to special moments of human generosity and kindness. For the first time since I was in diapers, I found myself in situations in which I physically could not do basic tasks without someone’s assistance. As a result, every bit of support that I received mattered.

No matter where I was, I would almost inevitably encounter two or three friends, acquaintances, or even strangers who would ask “Can I help?”. But the ones that really touched my heart were the people who didn’t just inquire if I needed assistance but went a step further and helped before I could even ask.

It was the classmate who would see me enter the lecture hall and immediately set up my chair and carefully place a seat in front of me so that I could elevate my ankle.

The stranger who helped to carry my backpack saying “I’ve been on crutches before, I know how much it can slow you down”.

The person who went and brought my car to me when I was struggling to get to the nearest trolley stop.

The numerous friends who would check in with me every few hours to make sure I had enough to eat, that I had a ride to get to the bathroom, and that I had enough people to keep me company.

With every door that someone opened, food that someone brought to me, and assistance that someone gave for nothing in return, I felt so moved and filled with gratitude and hope.

Lesson #4: Never expect people to always be there for you.

As wonderful as it was to have so much help from people, I quickly realized that no one could ever be there for me all the time. Inevitably, I’d be faced with a situation in which people just weren’t available or able to help out.

Just because I was in need of more physical assistance than those around me didn’t mean that the world would spin around me, always attending to my needs. Naturally, people would have other meetings to go to, errands to attend, things to do, and who was I to insist that they stop living their lives?

Above all, one of hardest challenges that I faced was mental. No matter how many were physically there for me, very few could help in the battle to stay positive. It was one of the most lonely things to experience when I realized that no one could always be there for me.

However, those moments, no matter how many times they kicked me down, they also pushed me to develop an inner strength and stronger connection with myself that I would not have had to build otherwise. They tested my character, my values, my worldview, and forced me to remain humble but become mentally strong.

Lesson #5: Impatience is not a virtue.

From the moment I was given my crutches, it felt as though life was giving me a lesson in patience in as many ways as it possibly could, just hoping that I might finally get the message.

There were just so many ways in which I was forced to slow down or personally suffered because I was being too impatient.

A week after the incident, I was starting to feel better so, without knowing any better, I stopped wearing crutches. Within just two days, my ankle began to hurt again and I found out that I had slowed my recovery. Better yet, a few days later, I had a flight to India that I had to go on alone.

The day of the flight, I went back to the Health Center begging them to figure out a way that I could travel without crutches – there was just no way that I could bring all my luggage while also limping on two sticks. Unfortunately, they refused to budge – no matter how minimal the sprain, rest was the only option – I had to go with my silver sticks. Once again, I was forced to slow down and avoid over-exerting.

While I was in India, I insisted that I could cover large distances on my own and without fully realizing it, I was moving faster on my crutches than people with average walking speeds. Within the second day of being there, my right foot began to give way and was struggling to hold my weight. Suddenly, neither of my feet were able to carry me, even with the help of the crutches. And once again, life had found its way of teaching me patience, in this case, by literally forcing me to stop and temporarily preventing me from being able to move.

Ultimately, it was only when I slowed down, took rest, and became more deliberate in making decisions that I was able to properly recover.

Lesson #6: Look underneath the surface.

As a relatively healthy looking male whose injury wasn’t always obvious or apparent (especially if I was sitting down), I was frequently subject to misjudgments from people who wouldn’t realize that I had a physical injury.

People would accidently insist that I come help them with carrying things, usually until they saw my crutches.

People would ask why I wasn’t walking over with them, not realizing that I was usually waiting for a car or some form of transportation.

Even once the doctor had given me the go-ahead to stop using crutches, I had to undergo another two months of slow recovery and physical therapy in order to bring my ankle back to (almost) full strength and motion. Without the crutches, my injury and recovering ankle were even more inconspicuous, meaning I was also subject to more misunderstanding.

People would get annoyed at me for walking too slowly, not realizing that I hadn’t walked properly in almost a month.

People would give me strange looks for taking the elevator to the second floor, not realizing that it was still painful for me to walk up stairs.

At the end of the day, I was undergoing a struggle that was essentially hidden from the public eye, making me a perfect target for judgment from people who didn’t take the time to look underneath the surface and realize what was going on.

And the truth is that whether it’s a subtle physical problem, depression and anxiety, or some trouble in our personal lives, we are all undergoing a constant struggle. Having had to experience the burden of living with physical crutches has ultimately helped me better appreciate the burden of those of us living with crutches of our own.

Chaos Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

Life can be pretty chaotic can’t it?

With the responsibilities we have in our outside world – at work, in the community, with the people we know – and the responsibilities we have inside our home (bills to pay, meals to prepare, paperwork to file, cupboards to sort, washing to do) there doesn’t seem to be much respite.

Chaos seems to reign inside and outside our home, and at times inside and outside our body. And that creates a turbulent energy which I believe is impossible to sustain long term.

But what if life wasn’t like this? What if life wasn’t chaotic in every aspect? What if the areas of your life that you could control were more of a sanctuary? How would that make you feel?

I know that life throws us curve balls and that at times it all seems too overwhelming – trust me, I’ve been there too. But that’s exactly the reason why it’s so important to slow down and remove some of the chaos from your life. To connect with what’s important to you and bring in the concept of sanctuary to your body, home, life – in whatever way works for you.

I know there are some people who thrive on chaos and I’m really happy for them. The fact that their body can keep them going amongst the stress and the exhaustion and the chaos is admirable. But I know from past experience that this simply won’t work for me. And, to be honest, it wouldn’t work for a lot of people I know – and maybe it won’t work for you either.

What you may have noticed is that more and more people are living a chaotic life – and really aren’t that happy with it.

The rushing around starts small. At first it doesn’t seem like chaos, it seems more like busyness. But over time it escalates. Work hours get longer, responsibilities expand, connection with the electronic world increases to the point that we forget what connection with our partner, friends, children, family, ourselves, felt like.

Once entrenched in this pattern it’s hard to shift, particularly if you feel you have no control over your life. Perhaps your boss expects you to work longer hours for the same pay. Perhaps you have expectations of yourself that are other-worldly, where you work all hours of the night and day and rarely switch off. Or perhaps you’re so disconnected from who you are that you have no way of seeing how far off track you’ve become.

I don’t think life has to be like this.

That isn’t because I don’t know what it’s like to work all hours or feel disconnected from my purpose. It’s because I’ve worked all hours and felt disconnected from my purpose that I know life doesn’t have to be like this.

I’ve worked toward getting back to what my life looked like before all the rushing and the overwhelm and the chaos started. And to be honest it feels a lot more purposeful, a lot more in flow and, most importantly, a lot more connected.

I’d love to say that I found this connection by sitting on a beach in the Mediterranean sipping cocktails and working on my tan, but that’s far from the truth. I run a busy household and a business – there’s a lot on both of those job descriptions! So I’m sure it wouldn’t surprise you to hear that at times I feel like the chaos has seeped in again.

Thankfully I’ve become aware of the chaos when it does start to rear its ugly head. It may be the slight adrenalin feeling in my body, starting at my heart and rippling through my veins. It might be a rushed morning where everything goes less than smoothly and we leave the house frazzled and scattered. It could be my crazy long to-do list which in reality means nothing compared to what my life could look like if it wasn’t chaotic.

I’ve become good at recognising the signs of chaos in my life and shifting gear when it does rise up. I’m not a reactionary kind of girl so before chaos even has a chance to descend upon me I actively work toward diminishing it.

My chaos-doesn’t-live-here list looks like this.

  • I meditate each day
  • I go to bed when I’m tired
  • I eat well
  • I exercise
  • I hug my husband and child
  • I spend time with women who light me up
  • I go on retreat
  • I spend time in nature
  • I play with the dog
  • I create with my hands
  • I have afternoon naps when I can
  • I watch TV that is fun and entertaining (ie not the news)
  • I choose service providers who I enjoy spending time with
  • I stay away from anything that I know will increase my stress levels
  • I say no, and I say yes, when it feels right
  • I listen to what my body is telling me – and I give it that

Your chaos-doesn’t-live-here list might be quite different to mine. If you don’t have one I highly recommend you create one. Look at your life as it is right now and start to recognise the activities you do each day that help kick your chaos to the curb. And most importantly, recognise the tasks and activities you do that bring chaos into your life and work toward diminishing them.

Why?

Because I believe you can live a more connected life by removing the chaos that surrounds you.

By making the choice to disconnect from it and reconnect with what’s truly important to you, your heart, your soul.

It’s a choice I know has made a huge change in my life and could possibly change your life in ways you can’t even imagine. So why not give it a go? What have you got to lose?

Senator McCain, the Constitution, and Sgt. Bergdahl

It is not that United States Senator John McCain (R-AZ) should be loved less, but that the Constitution should be loved more that he should be rebuked for declaring that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is “clearly a deserter” who should be punished. Senator McCain–like all other federal or state officers–took an oath to defend, not to besmirch the Constitution under Article VI.

All civilized jurisprudence celebrates the presumption of innocence. United States Chief Justice Edward White elaborated in Coffin v .United States (1895): “The principle that there is a presumption of innocence in favor of the accused is the undoubted law, axiomatic and elementary, and its enforcement lies at the foundation of the administration of our criminal law.”

A companion constitutional principle enshrined in Article I, section 9, clause 3 condemns bills of attainder, i.e., the legislative infliction of punishment without the procedural safeguards afforded by a judicial trial. As Justice Felix Frankfurter taught, “The history of liberty has largely been the history of observance of procedural safeguards.”

At present, Sgt. Bergdahl faces trial by general court-martial for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy for walking off his Army outpost in Afghanistan in 2009. Senator McCain has impaired Sgt. Bergdahl’s constitutional presumption of innocence by declaring him “clearly a deserter.” The Senator insistence that “I am not prejudging” was no more convincing than the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland: “Sentence first–verdict afterwards.” Mr. McCain has not retracted his support for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has played judge, jury, and prosecutor too to vilify Bergdahl as a “dirty rotten traitor.”

The Senator has also used his legislative influence over the armed forces in attempting to coerce punishment for Sgt. Bergdahl . Last October, Mr. McCain responded to Lt. Col. Mark Visger’s recommendation of neither jail time nor a punitive discharge for accused with the implied threat, “If it comes out that [Bergdahl] has no punishment, we’re going to have a hearing in the Senate Armed Services Committee.” As Chairman, Senator McCain wields substantial influence over military weapons and budgets and the appointments and promotions of military officers. The spirit if not the letter of the bill of attainder prohibition denounces the exertion of legislative power to prescribe judicial punishment for a named individual. And as St. Paul preached in 2 Corinthians 3:6, “the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”

The United States Supreme Court also instructed in Berger v. United States (1935) that the government’s interest in a “criminal prosecution is not that it shall win a case, but that justice shall be done.” And justice requires the appearance of justice, not coerced verdicts or punishments.

Senator McCain similarly dishonored due process and the presumption of innocence on March 26, 2014, when he asserted that Edward Snowden was working for the Russians: “Sure. Not a doubt in my mind,” he responded when asked by the Washington Examiner.

Mr. Snowden, however, has never been charged with acting as a foreign agent for Russia, and Senator McCain has never adduced proof other than his personal conviction that he has. Last July, Snowden wrote the following which conflicts with the Senator’s narrative: “Putin has signed a repressive new law that violates not only human rights but common sense. Dark day for Russia.”

Senator McCain should retract his constitutional blasphemies. The rule of law is too important to be crucified on a cross of pique or anger.

Why The Humane Society President Changed His Mind About Working With Michael Vick

When NFL star Michael Vick pled guilty to running a dog fighting ring on his property in 2007, he sparked instant and intense outage across the country. Vick’s violence against pit bulls ― he also admitted to killing six to eight dogs by hanging or drowning ― infuriated animal lovers, and one activist who was particularly disgusted was Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle.

As Pacelle told Oprah during an interview for OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday,” he and the Humane Society were very vocal in their condemnation of Vick’s horrifying acts.

“We demanded his prosecution because what he did to the animals was barbaric. It was despicable,” Pacelle says.

Vick ended up suspended from the NFL and served 19 months in prison. Then, the disgraced athlete reached out to the very people who had written him off the moment his cruelty surfaced publicly.

“One of his people called me just before he was getting out of prison, and they said, ‘Michael would like to work with the Humane Society of the United States on its anti-dog-fighting work,’” Pacelle recalls.

Pacelle, who figured the request was little more than a PR move, said no and hung up the phone. “I thought, ‘OK, this guy wants to do a makeover. He wants to use me for that,’” he says.

But then, Pacelle began to reflect on himself and his mission.

“I said, ‘What am I about at the Humane Society?’ I mean, am I not about changing people for the better? That people who are doing the wrong thing start to move and do the right thing?” he says. “That’s what I do. I’m not just talking to people who are ‘of the faith.’ If I’m doing that, that’s just an echo chamber.”

Pacelle reconsidered Vick’s proposal not just for this reason, but for another powerful benefit as well.

“I also thought, ‘What if Michael Vick put boots on the ground, sort of talking to these kids in communities where they’re getting pit bulls for the wrong reasons … and told them about the evils of dog fighting?’” Pacelle says. “From a campaigner’s perspective, that’s going to allow me to reach tens of thousands of kids that I would not have an audience with.”

Ultimately, Pacelle adds, he hoped that working with Vick would also send a signal to society that would make people become more conscious of their own behaviors regarding animals, whether that’s through their fashion choices or eating habits.

“I’m sending a signal that we’re all sinners when it comes to animals,” he says.

“SuperSoul Sunday” airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.

Another insight from Pacelle:

Humane Society president explains how animals are “our equals in their capacity to suffer”

On And Off The Field, These Paralympians Work #WithoutLimits

Paralympians are elite athletes at the pinnacle of their sports.

Thanks to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act 26 years ago, today’s American Paralympians are able to train as hard and compete like their Olympic counterparts, as access to sports and sports facilities is more of the norm rather than the exception. Similarly, thanks to increased accessibility requirements imposed by the International Olympic Committee for host cities and the impact of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, accessible sports facilities are increasingly available internationally as well. Yet, in many ways Paralympians are benefiting from a more “equal playing field” than we see in most workplaces around the world.

Unfortunately, not all persons with disabilities have achieved equal status with their non-disabled counterparts in the workplace. Even with greater access to buildings and facilities in the United States, many persons with disabilities still struggle to find equal employment. The Paralympics offer a success story demonstrating not only how the athletes have achieved equality through sports, but how they are often also leaders in their professional careers.

The Paralympics offer a success story demonstrating not only how the athletes have achieved equality through sports, but how they are often also leaders in their professional careers.

Paralympians have more to contribute than the sports in which they compete. When Team USA Paralympians retire from elite sports competition, many go on to successfully work in jobs in a variety of professions such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, financial advisors, and more. To highlight the success stories of these athletes, the State Department has launched a Social Media Awareness campaign #WithoutLimits.

Between now and Wednesday, September 7, which marks the opening day of the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio, we will share the profiles of up to 40 international and American Paralympians and Parasport athletes in their workplace. Each athlete will be featured holding a photo of themselves in their Paralympic sport to demonstrate the ways in which they “work #WithoutLimits.”

Eslam Mohamed,
Paralympic Swimmer

elsam mohamed

Elsam Mohamed is pictured smiling in front of a Juhayna sign. He is holding a photo of himself swimming.

After Mr. Eslam Mohamed of Egypt was paralyzed by a car accident in January 2012, he decided he wanted to learn how to swim and compete on a professional level. Within nine months of his accident, Eslam started representing Egypt in local and international competitions. He also helped establish the Egyptian national team in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He eventually achieved a couple of bronze medals in the open championship of Alcorcon in Madrid in March 2015. When he is not competing in sports, Eslam works as a human resource business partner in one of the biggest companies in food and beverages in Egypt, JUHAYNA. He also volunteers his time as a disability advocate and Vice-President at Alhassan Foundation for Differently Abled Inclusion, whose work is focused on wheelchair users in Egypt.

Laura Veleanu,
Paralympic Alpine Skier

Laura Valeanu is pictured smiling in a medical lab next to a model of a human heart. She is holding a photo of herself skiing.

Ms. Laura Veleanu is a 26-year-old Paralympic Alpine Skier from Romania, and is also a physician at the Institute of Pathology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. She started competing at a very early age, even after a motorcycle accident in 2006 that caused her right leg to be amputated below the knee. She debuted in the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada, which marked the first time in history Romania was represented at the Paralympic Winter Games. Her best results include fifth place in slalom at the Paralympic Winter Games in 2014 in Sochi, Russia; a bronze medal in slalom at the Paralympic World Championship in 2015 in Panorama, Canada; and, silver medal in giant slalom at the World Cup Finals in 2016 in Aspen, Colorado. She is currently preparing for the Paralympic Winter Games which will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea in 2018. Referred to as “the woman with the open heart” by her supervisor, she believes that people with disabilities should have the same opportunities in the workplace as non-disabled people.

Victor Calise,
Member of Paralympic Sled Hockey Team

victor calise
Victor Calise, a wheelchair user, is pictured smiling in front New York City Hall. Victor is holding a large photo of himself playing Sled Hockey at the 1998 Paralympic Games in Nagano, Japan.

Mr. Victor Calise competed on the first U.S. Paralympic sled hockey team in 1998 in Nagano, Japan. He now works directly for the Mayor of New York City as the Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for Persons with Disabilities, where is he focusing on making New York the most accessible city in the world through transportation options, employing people with disabilities, and providing greater access to city services and education. On and off the ice, Victor works #WithoutLimits.

Zahra Nemati,
Paralympic and Olympic Archer

ap photo

Zahra Nemati smiles during an elimination round of the individual archery competition at the Sambadrome venue during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 9, 2016.

Ms. Zahra Nemati of Iran secured qualification slots for archery in both 2016 Paralympics and Olympics. She was selected to carry Iran’s flag into the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, an honor bestowed on her by fellow teammates. In London in 2012, Zahra set a Paralympic record on her way to gold in the women’s individual recurve W1/W2, and she picked up a bronze medal in the women’s team recurve open. In Iran she is one of the most popular athletes in any sport. Her success resulted in significant media coverage back home, and inspired other women to take up Parasport, particularly archery. In June, 2014, she addressed a United Nations panel called “Sports for inclusive development: Empowering persons with disabilities through sport.” On and off the archery range, Zahra works to increase opportunities for women #WithoutLimits.

All of these individuals — and many more Paralympians who are being profiled in this campaign — have achieved similar greatness and success in their sport. Many also work on behalf of the disability community, either in mentoring the next generation of Paralympian athletes, or advocating for and improving the lives of persons with disabilities who want to achieve similar success #Withoutlimits. We are grateful for what these competitors achieve on and off the field, especially leveraging their status as Paralympians and their professional advancement to serve as a beacon of hope to so many people with disabilities around the world.

Remove the pillow or pillow cover as soon as the washing machine has ended the cycle and has shut off. Hang the pillow or cover up to dry in a well-ventilated area. If the care label specifies that the item is dryer-safe, place the pillow or pillow cover in the dryer and tumble dry on low heat. Fluff the pillow once it is dry in order to maintain its form. Don’t use the pillow until it is completely dry. Damp pillows will attract dirt more easily – Made in USA

The book considers how changes contingent toideological conflict could affect Roman aristocraticfoods and their presentation. Elite Roman ‘tastes': the Roman aristocratic foodfashions, flavors and styles are examined fromdifferent ideological and sensory perspectives. Onesection engages the spirituality of classic and, inparticular, elite Roman foods. This is followed by adiscussion on ‘blended’ Roman cuisine: the exoticstews and sauces on typically expects on the eliteRoman table. How the noble approached these ‘blended’creations, may have been contingent on his or herworldview. In the final chapter the Roman aristocratic dining environment is explored. It isargued that the dining setting played an in integralpart in the noble’s political-culinary agenda.

Former Miss Universe Becomes U.S. Citizen In Time To Cast Vote Against Trump

Former Miss Universe Alicia Machado became a U.S. citizen on Friday, just in time to cast her vote against the man who she says taunted her about her weight and accent when she was 19 years old: former pageant owner and current GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

The Venezuelan-born pageant winner, who took the oath of allegiance in Miami, shared the big news on Instagram. “[I’m] so proud and inspiration to be a U.S. Citizen! I’ll be voting!” she wrote in the caption, adding that she will be investing all of her power and support in Hillary Clinton.

“Miss Housekeeping and miss Piggy Can Vote,” she added, referencing the cruel names she’s said Trump used to taunt her.

In May, Machado told Inside Edition she faced verbal abuse from Trump “all the time,” commenting that she gained weight after she was crowned Miss Universe in 1996.

“He called me Miss Piggy,” she said. “I was very depressed.”

Trump publicly called the former pageant queen an “eating machine” in an interview with Howard Stern and has even admitted to pressuring her to lose weight.

Machado also told Inside Edition that Trump made fun of her accent and called her “Miss Housekeeping.”

Following the May report, Clinton tweeted her support for Machado. “Congratulations on becoming a U.S. citizen, Alicia. Enjoy casting that vote.” Oh, she will.

Speaking with Inside Edition Friday, Machado said she became American citizen for her daughter, her country and to exercise her right to vote. “The United States is in a very important moment and we need to take the power to go and vote,” she said.

Now Machado, who recently appeared in an endorsement photo for Clinton, is dedicating her time to encouraging other Latinos to register to vote.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Disclosure Trumps Withholding Almost Every Time — Part 1

“A hallmark of a healthy creative culture is that its people feel free to share ideas, opinions, and criticisms. Lack of candor, if unchecked ultimately leads to dysfunctional environments.” – Ed Catmull in Creativity, Inc.

Linda: Reveal don’t conceal; express don’t repress; accept don’t reject; connect don’t protect, and open don’t close, are good guidelines when committing to a partnership characterized by a high level of trust and closeness. There are so many couples where the lack of emotional intimacy compromises their sense of well-being.

There are a number of components involved in co-creating a highly successful partnership, not the least of which is to become consistently emotionally intimate. The process always begins with self. When we periodically step out of our busy lives, to take a reflective pause to see what is occurring in our body, mind, and emotions, we find the words to describe our feelings and needs. Once we have told ourselves the truth, then we are challenged to dare to risk revealing whatever is there to our partner.

Communicating fully and openly, without withholding is key to successful relationships. And yet, many people operate from a commitment to conceal that which they fear could reflect negatively on them. As a result, they tend to be discriminating about what they chose to share about themselves, and what they chose to withhold, even with people with whom they are closest. The practice of concealment can foster feelings of mistrust, inhibit spontaneity, and diminish feelings of intimacy.

So many of us had negative experiences in our past revealing our feelings and needs. We have been shamed and blamed for feeling the way we do. Those of us who attempted to be authentic were sometime ridiculed for being overly sensitive, making a mountain out of a molehill, and way too needy. We got the message early that it was dangerous to show our tender underbelly. We might be judged and criticized, even humiliated. Many of us have been studying our entire lives how to conceal, repress, and close off, thereby arriving at a level of mastery in disguising our true self. It can be revolutionary thought to reverse this process and dare to attempt to live another way.

Couples with strong, vital relationships use candor characterized by forthrightness or frankness. Candor is truth telling with tact and reserve. These couples are generally more committed to revealing all aspects of themselves, including those that may not reflect favorably upon them. They are more committed to authentically sharing themselves than they are protecting their image and manipulating other’s impressions. The commitment to reveal is really about authenticity. For those who are committed to being authentic,

Self-expression shows up in all of their relationships, not just with their romantic partner.

Such a commitment to authenticity promotes a kind of transparency that creates deeply meaningful and fulfilling personal connections. Those of us who trust each other to be accepting and non-judging, feel secure in revealing our feelings and experiences on an on going basis. Trust is earned out of a long history of acceptance. By practicing revealing, without being met with judgment, we accumulate evidence that we can be ourselves. The ability to accept another non-judgmentally is linked to self-acceptance, and such self-acceptance is a circular process that allows us to be accepting of each other.

People get nervous when they consider the idea of being more self-revelatory, but they are intrigued too. On the one hand, they sense that there is enormous possibility that someone will finally accept them “as is”. They are delighted with the thought of a lover or a friend saying, “I love you,” imagining resting into that love and the peace of mind that would come with it, without wondering whether they would be loved if the other person knew the whole story about them. On the other hand, dread and trepidation will surface, when their recollections of past painful experiences start showing up.

When we succeed in hiding who we really are from others, we lose touch with our real self. When we disclose ourselves to at least one other person, we know ourselves more deeply and that intimate knowledge of self allows us to make wise choices determining where our lives will go. Our destiny will be in alignment with our true self, our tastes, preferences beliefs, values and passions. Stay tuned for Part 2 to find the six steps to becoming transparent.

Researchers noted the critical role that supportive teachers can play in improving LGBT student wellbeing and mental health.

Male Trans Youth at Higher Risk of Suicide

A new clinical study of trans patients found that young trans men were three times more likely than young trans women to have attempted suicide, and were also more likely to have engaged in self-harm and to feel unsafe at home. Additionally, trans youth who were unhappy with their weight were twice as likely to have attempted suicide as those who were not. In all, three in ten trans youth had attempted suicide.

Here’s What It Was Like To Watch Brazil Win Soccer Gold In Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO ― People began to swarm the cafes and bars along Copacabana Beach early in the afternoon Saturday, hours before Brazil’s men’s soccer team would take the field at Rio’s Maracana Stadium for a much-anticipated rematch with Germany in the gold medal match of the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Brazilians don’t usually care about the Olympic soccer tournament. Its meaning pales in comparison to the World Cup, which Brazil has won five times. But Rio on Saturday was different ― Brazil’s iconic yellow jerseys were ubiquitous on Copacabana and elsewhere, and street vendors swarmed the sidewalks to sell replicas to fans making last-second buys ― because this match was different. It was Germany, after all, who handed Brazil the most devastating loss in its proud soccer history at the 2014 World Cup, a 7-1 defeat no one here has forgotten.

Seven-to-one has become a popular expression of grief in Brazil, used at times to explain away a particularly bad day. “Today,” someone might say, “God handed me a 7-1.”

The score regularly finds its way into casual conversations, even those that aren’t about soccer. It borders on cliche to say that the sport acts as a metaphor for Brazil writ large, but sometimes it does.

“Sometimes it feels like the entire country has taken a 7-to-1,” a journalist in Sao Paulo said last week, in an attempt to explain the feelings generated by Brazil’s political and economic crises in the runup to these Olympics.

This match, then, gave Brazil a chance to absolve some of those demons. And in the hours before it began, as liter after liter of Brazilian beer flowed, the joy that came with the chance to exact some revenge was palpable right alongside the fear that something like 7-1 might happen again. Some people said they wouldn’t enjoy a single second of it ― they just wanted it to be over, with Brazil holding a gold medal.

The tension only rose when Germany started fast, sending an early shot off the crossbar and behind the goal. But then Neymar, the crown jewel of Brazilian soccer, struck. His curled free kick caromed off the crossbar and into the net, putting Brazil ahead 1-0, and the streets of Copa burst into celebration.

But no one relaxed. Let’s just end it now, people would say, and when Germany scored early in the second half to make it 1-1, a sense of dread set in thicker than the afternoon clouds that often engulf the Christ the Redeemer statue high above the city.

Brazil, however, countered by dominating possession in the last half hour of the match, and each time a yellow-clad attacker broke open toward the goal, butts left seats and yells of “Vai, Brasil!” ― “Go Brazil!”echoed through the streets. But then the chance would end empty ― a scuffed shot once, just wide the next time, a German defender’s last ditch slide to take the ball away from an attacker when it seemed a goal was inevitable ― they’d crash back into their seats.

The bars were so full that people lined the sidewalks to watch the TVs facing the streets. Two women in a closed-for-the-evening salon remained at work, glued to the TV. There was no leaving now, not as the match entered extra time after a tie in regulation. But no one scored in those 30 minutes either, and the match headed to a penalty shootout.

Germany kicked first, and the crowd erupted when Brazilian keeper Weverton guessed the right way and appeared to make the save. But the ball hit the back of the net instead. He did it again on the next one ― went the right way, even got a hand on the ball. But it crept through again.

The tension turned into outright fear when Brazil’s players began the walk up to the spot to take their kick. But each Brazilian scored calmly and easily, and everyone allowed themselves to relax, at least for a few seconds until the next player walked up to take his turn. After four kicks apiece no one had missed. But on Germany’s fifth, Weverton’s guesses finally paid off. Some in the bar saw him save it, many others, heads buried firmly in hands, never did. But the roar of the crowd sent everyone into frenzy, because now their star was up, and all he had to do was score to deliver the gold.

Neymar had missed the Germany match two years ago after suffering a back injury in Brazil’s victory over Colombia. He had faced criticism earlier in the tournament when Brazil failed to score in each of its first two matches, listless results that hardly inspired confidence this moment would ever come. But now he was a hero again, or soon to be anyway, and cheers of “Neymar! Neymar!” rose through the crowd.

He took a few steps, dancing almost, and in that moment you could feel the nerves bursting all across Rio. It’s hard to remember now exactly where he kicked the ball, or which part of the goal it went in, because the moment it did, strangers began to hug strangers, burying their tearful eyes into the shoulders of people they’d never met before. The liters of beer began to move table to table. It didn’t matter if it was yours. It was there, and everyone wanted to share. They poured them like celebratory glasses of champagne, and then asked the waitress for more, and poured those too. Then they broke into cheer: Chants of “Champion! Champion!” filled the air as Neymar led the team atop the podium.

They had waited two years for the chance to beat Germany, to rid themselves of the despair that had engulfed the entire country that night. The gold medal ― it is Brazil’s first in men’s soccer ― won’t totally do that. Defeats in the national sport on home soil aren’t simply forgotten, and the sting of the loss to the Germans in 2014 will never fully go away.

But for one night, at least, 7-1 was history.

These Underwater Yoga Photos Prove The Practice Is Truly Magical

Looking for a reason to hit the yoga mat today? Take a gander at these stunning photos.

The surreal images, which were snapped by photographer Elena Kalis, feature yoga instructor Britta Jade as she masterfully executes yoga poses under water. They’re a truly majestic display of how yoga can be both athletic and a work of art.

The photos are an inspirational reminder that the practice can be one of the best ways to move your body. Research shows yoga can reduce stress and lower your risk for heart disease. It also can improve your sleep and boost your brain function. Not to mention the fact that yoga can be an excellent form of strength training, which can help maintain a healthy weight.

While not everyone can exactly run off to the crystal shores of a remote island to nail these moves, there are some added perks to taking your yoga practice to the water. Studies suggest being near the ocean can make you calmer and more creative. The sea also puts your brain in a more meditative state.

If you’ve been slacking on a yoga routine (or hesitant to try one at all), take a look at the pictures below. Then check out these healthy reasons to prioritize the practice for additional motivation.

Health Official Warns Zika Could Spread Across U.S. Gulf

Aug 21 (Reuters) – One of the top U.S. public health officials on Sunday warned that the mosquito-borne Zika virus could extend its reach across the U.S. Gulf Coast after officials last week confirmed it as active in the popular tourist destination of Miami Beach.

The possibility of transmission in Gulf States such as Louisiana and Texas will likely fuel concerns that the virus, which has been shown to cause the severe birth defect known as microcephaly, could spread across the continental United States, even though officials have played down such an outcome.

Concern has mounted since confirmation that Zika has expanded into a second region of the tourist hub of Miami-Dade County in Florida. Miami’s Wynwood arts neighborhood last month became the site of the first locally transmitted cases of Zika in the continental United States.

“It would not be surprising we would see additional cases perhaps in other Gulf Coast states,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the allergy and infectious diseases unit of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), said in an interview on Sunday morning with ABC News.

Fauci noted that record flooding this month in Louisiana – which has killed at least 13 people and damaged some 60,000 homes damaged – has boosted the likelihood Zika will spread into that state.

“There’s going to be a lot of problems getting rid of standing water” that could stymie the mosquito control efforts that are the best way to control Zika’s spread, he said.

U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections in pregnant women can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies. The connection between Zika and microcephaly first came to light last fall in Brazil, which has now confirmed 1,835 cases of microcephaly that it considers to be related to Zika infections in the mothers.

On Friday, Florida Governor Rick Scott confirmed that state health officials had identified five cases of Zika believed to be contracted in Miami Beach.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told pregnant women they should avoid the trendy area and suggested those especially worried about exposure might consider avoiding all of Miami-Dade County.

NIH’s Fauci on Sunday said the conditions of most of the country make it unlikely there would be a “diffuse, broad outbreak,” even though officials need to prepare for that possibility.

He compared it with diseases such as Dengue, which is endemic in certain tropical and subtropical regions of the world but rarely occurs in the continental United States. In Miami’s Wynwood area, experts have seen “substantial” knockdowns of mosquito populations.

Still, its containment is more complicated because Zika can be sexually transmitted, Fauci said.

“This is something that could hang around for a year or two,” he said.

The World Health Organization has said there is strong scientific consensus that Zika can also cause Guillain-Barre, a rare neurological syndrome that causes temporary paralysis in adults.

To prepare for his future life amongst the rich, Sam sends Eliot to take lessons with a private tutor who will teach Eliot all about wordly pleasures. Zander is rich, handsome, and intriguing, and Eliot is in shock when he realizes he is attracted to his teacher. As their lessons begin, Eliot is trapped in a whirlwind of shame and pleasure, and he realizes he may be heading down a path that will leave him alone and hurt as he falls for Zander. Warning! This is a gay romantic serial with a touch of fantasy! It contains 5600 words with adult content and is not meant for those under the age of 18!

It’s Not Just Texas. Maternal Deaths Are High Across The U.S.

The pregnancy-related death rate in Texas nearly doubled between 2010 and 2012 ― the same time period that the state severely cut women’s health funding, most notably at Planned Parenthood, according to a new study.

The research, which will be published in the September issue of the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, found that 148 Texas women died in 2012 from pregnancy-related causes, either while pregnant, or soon after being pregnant, up from 72 deaths in 2010. Similarly, the rate in Texas jumped from 18 deaths per 100,000 births in 2006 to 36 deaths per 100,000 births in 2014.

But sadly, Texas is just an extreme snapshot of the United States’ bigger maternal mortality problem.

The U.S. is the only developed country in the world where maternal deaths actually increased between 1993 and 2013, according to the World Health Organization.

While 99 percent of maternal deaths happen in developing countries, the U.S. shoulders a disproportionate burden for a developed nation. Other countries where maternal mortality increased during that same time period included Afghanistan, Botswana and Chad.

A constellation of systemic health care failures

“There is sadly no magic bullet that explains what is behind the high levels of maternal mortality in the United States,” Rachel Ward, managing director of research at Amnesty International U.S., previously told Al Jazeera. “It’s a combination of factors that speak to the systemic problems of failing to provide affordable, accessible, quality health services to all women in the United States.”

Some Americans are more vulnerable than others; race and poverty play roles. Poverty is tightly linked to poor health outcomes, including depression, asthma, obesity and diabetes, all of which are more prevalent in poor communities than in the general population, and which are considered pregnancy risk factors by the National Institutes of Health. Poor women are also less likely to have access to health care, contraception and prenatal care, all of which can contribute to poor health outcomes.

And for pregnant women of color, there are added ― and largely unexplained ― risks. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2007 found that although black women were no more likely than white women to suffer from dangerous pregnancy-related conditions such as preeclampsia, eclampsia, abruptio placentae, placenta previa, and postpartum hemorrhage, they were two to three times more likely to die from those conditions than their white counterparts.

What happened in Texas is hard to explain

The study authors felt that closing women’s health services in Texas wasn’t a dramatic enough occurrence to explain the maternal mortality spike.

“In the absence of war, natural disaster, or severe economic upheaval, the doubling of a mortality rate within a 2-year period in a state with almost 400,000 annual births seems unlikely,” they wrote.

And yet, the mortality rate did double. The study authors didn’t speculate about what could have caused this spike in maternal deaths, and a state task force tasked to study the problem in 2013 won’t release its first report until Sept. 1.

Still, access to care is a major issue, especially for women in rural areas. According to Sarah Wheat, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, closing family planning clinics hurt women in Texas, many of whom see the clinics as an entry point into the health care system, the Dallas Morning News reported.

“Chances are they’re going to have a harder time finding somewhere to go to get that first appointment,” Wheat said. “They may be delayed in getting that initial pregnancy test and then a prenatal referral.”

But abortion access is key for maternal health

Another important factor in maternal mortality, one that’s less frequently discussed, is women’s access to safe and legal abortion.

Making it difficult for women to have abortions doesn’t mean abortions don’t happen. Instead, women who don’t have legal access take risks, either by attempting dangerous self-abortions or by trusting individuals without formal training to perform the procedure in sometimes less than hygienic conditions.

Unsafe abortions are the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide, accounting for between 8 and 15 percent of deaths, according to a report published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology in 2015.

And with abortion clinics rapidly closing in Texas, this is a major concern. Between 2012 and 2015, the number of abortions clinics in Texas shrank from 41 to 17, which puts  the average Texas county approximately 111 miles its nearest clinic, according to The New York Times.

I Am, I Feel — A Tale Of Compassion And A Longing For A Kinder Society

2016-08-19-1471591695-9266246-IamIfeel.jpg

Today I feel let down. My heart feels heavy, my shoulders are hunched and rounded and my eyes gaze at the floor. How could they step on my values like this?

Deep down I know I’m probably overreacting. There’s most probably a reasonable explanation for their behaviour but that still doesn’t make it right does it?

You see the words have been spoken, they’ve landed in the universe and they can never be removed. If you look at your watch the time is now – so the words will remain in the past forever – they can’t be retrieved, crossed out or disposed of.

So what do I do? I can’t sit here forever replaying the conversation in my mind. Can I?

And then I shake myself down, remind myself that I am enough, I am loved and words are just words. I am stronger than that.

I can either let this temporary interaction steer me into a path of negativity where my gremlin will have a party and constantly whine and repeat phrases such as ‘I am not enough’, or I can ask myself ‘whether there’s any truth in what’s been said?’

I am
I am the maker of my own life, the conductor of my own orchestra and the amazing music that shall continue to play as I dance in my own magnificence of authenticity. For I am real, with my feet firmly grounded knowing I stand tall honoring my values and following my true life purpose. I am happy to be me. Yeah I said it, I’ve just typed it and I mean it! It took me a long time to get to that and now I just want to shout it from the roof tops. You see I know that my lifestyle and the perspective of being with gratitude doesn’t suit everyone but that’s up to them. That’s their choice and this is mine. I choose to be happy, for it to be a way of life not a destination. I choose to be thankful for the air that I breathe, the loving people I am surrounded by, the roof over my head and the food that I eat. I choose to be everything I am and do in life. And that choice includes being thoughtful and kind to others.

So often in life we rush round not really paying attention to the people around us, the way we conduct ourselves and sometimes the things we say. We don’t always engage mouth and brain, words tumble out, lies are spoken, judgements are made and relationships are tested.

Karen Armstrong makes such a poignant point when she says:

“Look into your own heart, discover what gives you pain and then refuse to inflict that pain on anybody else.”

So what would it be like to start noticing more, to connect with a kinder persona? Or making an effort to make eye contact and smile? Imagine how many people may respond? They may very much welcome the gesture. Perhaps it is the only person that will interact with them that day.

I feel
You see I am, I feel. I want interaction, for my existence to be noticed. I want you to recognise I have feelings. That your words can have an impact on my mindset, no matter how determined I am to have a positive outlook in all I am and do.

I want you to engage with me without negativity or judgement and if there are things to be said to do it with compassion, honesty and with space for me to listen, acknowledge and respond. I want to feel heard. I want to feel respected.

I want to notice how I connect with my heart, how my body reacts to conversations and genuine interactions. Because I am and I feel.

So I ask you, when did you last connect with compassion? Or consider what you say and how you say it? And how people respond to you?

A good deed every day
How does your mindset and the way you are and be have an impact on others?

We often say the phrase ‘I’ve done my good deed for the day’ perhaps for example by opening a door for someone, handing in lost property or helping someone with a task. Hang on though – what about all the other hours in the day? Is there not room for more good deeds and a general conduct of respecting each other, supporting each other and letting compassion and kindness become the norm?

We have become such a target driven society with a ‘me first’ attitude that reminders to step back and be more self-aware of our actions and how we are ‘being’ is most definitely welcomed and needed. Helping others has been found to trigger activity in the same area of the brain that is switched on when people experience pleasure or receive rewards. ‘Random acts of kindness’ is certainly a phrase I see more and more these days and when we do participate in such an act it is more often than not paid forward to someone else. This ‘moral elevation’ can increase motivation and willingness to perform this on a repeated basis and in turn can make for a happier and more compassionate culture within the community. Take a moment to think back to a recent time when you have displayed love and kindness – how did it make you feel? You see the benefits for our own health and wellbeing can be enhanced too. In the words of the Dalai Lama:

“The creation of a more peaceful and happier society has to begin from the level of the individual, and from there it can expand to one’s family, to one’s neighbourhood, to one’s community and so on.”

Here are 3 daily steps to try:

  1. Make eye contact and smile with everyone you come into contact with. Notice how this feels and how you react when people smile at you.
  2. Notice how you engage with others? Are you positive? Do you encourage dialogue rather than monologue? Do people tend to mirror the behaviour you portray?
  3. Connect with gratitude and consider what you can appreciate from conversations that go well and those that don’t. What can you take from them?

As human beings we can all work together to support each other or we can step on values and cause a ripple of negativity.

My message to you

“Human interaction is a powerful thing so be mindful of what you say and how you say it.”

I am only one person yet my behaviour and interactions can cause a cascade of love and warmth across the people I engage with. It’s all about fostering a culture of connection, humanity and compassion. It may start with me but it can continue as far as can be if we all play a part.

Like a Mexican wave, I’m starting this cascade of compassion. I’m smiling and noticing my own actions more and more because I am, I feel. Do you?

Changing Travel Plans Due To Zika? Here Are 13 Warm Vacations To Take This Winter

It may not feel like it right now, but winter is coming.

The colder months are the perfect time for a sunshiny escape, and some families travel to spots like the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico and South America. Prices surge, beaches become crowded ― it’s the high season.

But for families expecting a baby or planning a pregnancy, travel plans may have to change due to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation that pregnant women not travel to areas with active Zika virus transmission. The CDC also advises women planning to become pregnant not travel to places with active Zika virus transmission as research on the infectious disease continues.

For those travelers currently changing their plans or looking for places to take a break this winter, check out this list of warm-weather vacation spots that, at the time of this article posting, are not listed by the CDC as having active Zika virus transmission.

And as always, before you head out of town, be sure to check out the State Department and CDC websites for the most updated travel warnings, guidelines and recommendations for American tourists.

Over the the last week and a half, female athletes, in particular, have stormed through Rio de Janeiro and into the record books. In sports ranging from swimming to wrestling, women have made sure their performances both in the water and on the ground will not soon be forgotten.

With the games wrapping up soon, we thought now’s as good a time as any to take a step back and appreciate just how many historic moments there have been for female athletes in Rio so far. And hey, there are still a few days left for even more memorable moments, too.

1. Katie Ledecky broke the world record in both the women’s 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle.

2. Simone Manuel became the first African-American woman to take gold in an individual swimming event.

3. Michelle Carter became the first American woman to win gold in shot put.

4, 5, 6. Three American women swept the 100-meter hurdles ― the first time any country has done so.

7. Ibtihaj Muhammad became the first U.S. woman to win an Olympic medal in a hijab.

8. Sara Ahmed became the first Arab woman to win an Olympic weightlifting medal.

9. U.S. cyclist Kristin Armstrong made sure she won her third gold medal in the cycling time trial, then collapsed to the floor.

10. Jenny Simpson won the U.S. its first Olympic medal ever in the women’s 1500-meter race.

11. And Emma Coburn won the U.S. its first medal in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.

12. Oksana Chusovitina, 41, became the oldest woman to ever compete in Olympic gymnastics.

13. Japan’s Kaori Icho became the first woman to win four straight Olympic gold medals in wrestling.

14. Sakshi Malik became the first Indian woman to medal in wrestling.

15. Shaunae Miller literally dove across the finish line to win gold in the women’s 400-meter final.

16. Judoka Majlinda Kelmendi won Kosovo’s first Olympic medal ever, and it was gold.

17. Monica Puig won Puerto Rico’s first-ever gold medal, and it was in tennis.

18. A Mexican-American woman named Sarah Robles won the U.S. its first weightlifting medal in 16 years.

19. And finally, some 19-year-old woman named Simone Biles became the first U.S. gymnast to snag four gold medals at one Olympic Games.

Do Not Pass Go!

“They ought to be in jail,” I heard her mumble under her breath. Where are the police when you need them? Really though, they were just kids being kids. Really not hurting anyone, just pushing to find the boundaries. But interestingly enough, the US has more than 7 million people in jail or probation. Of course, we also have the highest crime rate of any civilized country. About 50 people are murdered in the US every day. I understand that we have to protect the public from murder and violent crime, but who are the rest of these folks in jail? 1.4 million is a lot of people.

When I think of her comment my head spins a little. I wonder what those numbers would be like if we incarcerated everyone that offended us or we didn’t like? Maybe prisons for our ex-employers? ex-spouses? Kids that skateboard by the no skateboarding sign? We need to do something!

We also like to keep our thoughts locked up, we think they are dangerous. If we express what we are really thinking we would go to jail, right? Worse yet, if we act on those thoughts can you imagine. Millions more would be in jail. What a murderous, violent bunch we really are.

Or maybe not so much. Somehow we have gotten confused about the rights and responsibilities of free will. With every right, there can also be a wrong. If we want to be free to make our own choices, then everyone gets the same freedom. If we are going to be truly free, we can only do that with respect and love for others. We need to control our worse impulses and put in place a perspective of tolerance and acceptance. If we want everyone to accept us for who we are, then we need to accept other for who they are. Can’t just be one way.

All relationships, whether acquaintance, friend or lover require at their core acceptance and respect. And it has to work on both sides all the time. Without that, we might as well just be animals fight for dominance.

Take time to think out your dislikes and hates. Are they based in your own biases? Are they more about you than them? What happens if you stop hating? No, that doesn’t mean you have to love everything, just respect it for what or who it is. What if we all just stopped trying to use the word “hate?” I suspect our incarceration and murder rate would drop considerably.

Anyway, I’d love to write more but my coffee cup is empty and I hate that. Well maybe not so much…

Altruistic People Have More Sex

2016-08-18-1471546958-7912781-15niceguy.w710.h473.2x.jpg

By Drake Baer

There’s more good news for warmhearted hornballs. A study I covered last month found that in relationships, the more attentive people are to their partners, the more they have sex. And according to new research, that logic carries over to a lifetime’s worth of sexual adventures: The more altruistic people are, the more sex they have, whether it’s hooking up or settling down.

For a new paper published in the British Journal of Psychology, a research team lead by Nipissing University psychologist Steven Arnocky got the lowdown on people’s sweetness and sexual history. In one study, the researchers recruited 192 unmarried women and 105 unmarried men from northern Ontario and threw a bunch of autobiographical and psychological examinations their way. The first was an assessment measuring altruism (with items like “I have helped push a stranger’s car out of the snow,” “I have given directions to a stranger,” and the like). Then came several measures of mating success. One was a self-reported desirability scale, with items like “Members of the opposite sex that I like tend to like me back” and “I can have as many sexual partners as I choose.” Then they shared data points like their number of lifetime sex partners, their lifetime number of casual sex partners, and if they were in a relationship, how many times they had sex in the last 30 days. They also took a personality assessment.

Related: So There’s an Easy Way to Have More Sex With Your Partner

After crunching the numbers, the researchers found that altruistic behavior “significantly predicted” self-reported mating success and lifetime number of sexual partners, and that it was “modestly related” with sex within a relationship. The researchers also found that altruism had a stronger link to casual sex partners for men compared to women. In a second study of 335 undergraduate women and 189 undergraduate men, participants did self-reports on desirability, sexual history, and personality. They were also presented with a hypothetical situation: If they were to win a $ 100 raffle, would they keep the money, donate it to charity, or do some combination of the two? In line with the first study, the second found that donating “significantly predicted” the number of people someone had slept with over their lifetime.

These results, the researchers write, fall in line with previous work around altruism and sexuality: In hunter-gatherer societies, men who excel at bringing home (and sharing) the bacon have more reproductive success. While previous research indicated that people say they prefer altruistic mates, this study suggests that they bang them, too.

In correspondence with Science of Us, Arnocky was careful to note that, because of the way this study was designed — self-reporting and all — you can’t draw out the reason why altruists were more thoroughly sexed, all you’ve got to work with is associations. He says that future research could follow people through adolescence and into sexual maturity to see how much altruism leads to future mating success, and it would be cool to see if it replicated across cultures. (Canadians are notoriously nice; would the kindness and sex link carry over for New Yorkers?). To Arnocky, the results run counter to some of the sexually aggressive narratives about attraction that float around pop culture: “We often hear things like ‘nice guys finish last’ and this attitude can affect the way we interact with potential mates — remember the recent popularity of ‘negging’ (deliberate backhanded compliments as a pick-up strategy)?” he writes. “These behaviors seem to contradict what people are actually looking for in a partner.” As in: kindness.

Inside Marco Rubio’s Desperate Fake Support For LGBT Rights

Marco Rubio has many times over proven not only how spineless he is, but how devoid he is of any conviction or passionate ideas. Back in May when he endorsed Donald Trump — after having called him a “con man” and after experiencing the brutal humiliation that only Trump can serve upon to his opponents — a USA Today reporter quoted me stating, “Rubio is truly a politician with no ideas, just a jumble of crap, ready to support any position, person, anything to help him get ahead.”

I stand by every word of that, even more so after Rubio’s latest comments on LGBT rights to a virulently anti-LGBT group. The Florida Senate candidate last week gave a speech in Orlando at a conference organized by the American Renewal Project — as did Donald Trump. The group’s founder, David Lane, has warned that “homosexual totalitarianism is out of the closet” and “the militants are trying to herd Christians there.” And many of the hundreds of anti-LGBT activists in attendance have said worse.

Too much of the media reported Rubio’s speech as a turning point of some sort, in which he supposedly lectured those who convened on why they needed to be more tolerant of LGBT people (even as assured them they could continue to have their hateful views.)

Rubio was portrayed by some of reports as warning conservatives about the “costs of gay intolerance” or suggesting they “extend love” to LGBT people or to “not judge them.” But as Zack Ford at Think Progress meticulously showed, Rubio didn’t change any of the hard-core positions he has on homosexuality — including calling it a “sin,” and refusing to support marriage equality , which he reiterated in his speech — and he spent most of his time justifying his anti-LGBT positions rather than challenging the audience.

But why did Rubio feel compelled to even fake support for LGBT rights? Desperation, again. Rubio, who was among the most extreme anti-LGBT candidates of the 17 GOP presidential primary contenders, promising to put judges on the Supreme Court to overturn the Obergefell ruling, saw a sudden shift in the polls in his Florida Senate race, and realized he had to do something fast. He’d committed to speaking to the anti-LGBT group back when most polls showed him with a very comfortable lead over both Democratic opponents vying in the primary — and he’ll still need Christian conservatives to win.

But literally the day before the event last Friday a new poll showed Rubio’s 13-point lead against Democratic Congressman Patrick Murphy had evaporated, with the two in a statistical time. Bashing gays may have worked in the presidential primary race with a right-wing GOP base nationally, but it won’t go over well in Florida, an urban state where positions on marriage equality are changing as they are all across the country among the general electorate.

Meanwhile, Equality Florida was turning up the heat, with a protest scheduled outside the event, and the group was getting a lot of attention in the days leading up to it, focusing on Rubio’s homophobia. It would eventually get hundreds outside the event in a vibrant demonstration against Rubio. The senator had taken a lot of heat from LGBT activists for his response to the Orlando mass-shooting at the LGBT Pulse nightclub, in which 49 mostly Latinx queer people were killed.

Orlando’s openly gay city commissioner Patty Sheehan slammed him in an interview with me. “Marco Rubio, the senator from Florida, walked on our blood-stained streets with people from the Hispanic community,” Sheehan said of Rubio, who, like other Republicans, was late to respond to the horrific shooting. “And he went right back to Washington — one of the few times he actually showed up for work — and voted against sensible gun legislation.” She added of Rubio and other Republicans, “How dare you come here to my city — our city — and stand in front of the microphone and take up space?….You loaded those bullets with hatred, as far as I’m concerned.'”

With a big lead Rubio could slough off the criticism and continue his hardline stance on LGBT Issues. But with his poll numbers dropping — even a newer, more optimistic poll has him leading only by 5 points, just outside the margin of error — Rubio, a victim of his own spinelessness in having endorsed Trump and now experiencing the down-ballot effect, thus spinelessly posited a shift on LGBT rights even though it wasn’t a shift at all.

Basically he offered the classic Catholic “love the sinner, hate the sin” rationale. He pointed to how LGBT people “have experienced sometimes severe condemnation and judgment from some Christians,” and noted that” loving our LGBT neighbors is not a betrayal of what the Bible teaches.” But he made sure to explain that he still believes “marriage is between a man and woman.”

There’s no change in Rubio’s positions toward LGBT rights and no change in his style as a politician, which, as I stated two months ago regarding his endorsement of Trump, is all about being ready to support any position or person, anything to help him get ahead.

The Secret To A Life Of Grace & Ease

Ever wonder why so many people suffer? I have. I was one of those people who lived my life worrying about things, always in a constant struggle. I never believed life could be like it is now, filled with joy, abundance, grace and ease.

It took me a long time to get to the bottom of why I suffered. And there are many reasons that I’ve come across. But one of the biggest reasons was that I had a religious belief that said I am a sinner. I took that belief to mean that I am bad and not worthy of God’s abundance and love.

Over the years, I’ve chipped away at that old belief. I’ve read different definitions of what “sin” really means, one being an ancient archery term that means “off the mark.” But what I’ve learned through my own conversations with God is that sin means we are simply being human. And in our humanness, we disconnect from the love inside of us.

God is love. And love is God. To connect to God, you must tap into the love inside of you. Loving yourself unconditionally is the way there.

That means you have to get to know who you are. You have to take the time to look within and get in touch with what YOU believe, not what others tell you. You must give yourself and your feelings a voice.

Loving yourself unconditionally means you must be kind and gentle to yourself, no longer judging yourself.

Most of us have been taught to believe that if we love ourselves, honoring our thoughts, feelings, passions and dreams, we are being selfish. In other words, we are being sinners. And if we are sinners, we are bad. So to avoid our fear of God’s wrath, we continue to deny ourselves.

And, thus, we live in a perpetual disconnect.

As a result, we feel stressed out, competitive, depressed, angry, resentful, frustrated, alone and never “enough.” We believe our pain is caused by people and circumstances outside of ourselves, but our suffering is due to a disconnection from unconditional love.

You don’t deserve to suffer and struggle. You stop the pain when you stop seeing yourself as anything but love and give yourself permission to align with God.

You are reading this article because your spirit is calling you to move into alignment. That means no longer trying to be anything but you.

You say yes to love when you say yes to you!

If you’re like me and were raised with the belief that being a sinner means you’re bad, then chances are you’re trying to be someone other than who you are.

You’re not bad. You’re human. And to be human means you’re going to feel disconnected at times. You’re going to be “off the mark.” To get “on the mark,” you must accept that you are human.

It’s time to stop judging your humanness.

You are here to have a human experience. That’s why you’re on this planet! The more you can accept this and love yourself, releasing all judgment, the sooner you’ll move into unconditional love and align with God. It is in this alignment where you experience peace, joy, passion, playfulness and purpose. And with that inner abundance, you will attract unlimited outer abundance.

Love attracts love.

As you own this truth, your life will flow with grace and ease.

2016-08-17-1471451167-889330-Beachpurpletogoinblog.jpg

It’s time to stop hiding. To embrace your humanness you must get honest with yourself and honest with the world.

As you say yes to yourself, you live as an expression of God in human form. You live as unconditional love.

The next time you suffer emotionally, simply think of yourself as being “off the mark” of who you were created to be. Ask yourself, “What do I need to do to embrace my humanness and love myself unconditionally?”

As you give yourself full permission to love and accept yourself, you will raise your Worthiness Quotient to abundance. Miracle after miracle will show up. You’re suffering will end and you’ll open up to receive a life of grace and ease because you KNOW you are worthy of it.

Terri Britt is a spiritual coach, inspirational speaker, former Miss USA, and the award-winning author of The Enlightened Mom. Are you ready to raise your worthiness quotient? 5 Phobias You May Not Realize You Experience

By: Cassie Shortsleeve

Discover the difference between an everyday fear and paralyzing phobia by cross-checking your worries against these five surprising disorders. They’re more common than you think.

Fear is a normal, biological response to everyday issues that spark anxiety, such as asking for a raise, confronting a loved one, and crossing the street to avoid a creepy stranger. This kind of stress can actually be useful, making you more alert and attentive until you feel safe and calm. Most of us learn early on how to function through fear and are not held back by it. But for some, certain fears can be more overwhelming and immobilizing than others.

Related: 4 Ways to Boost Your Mood Naturally

Heights, flying, and snakes are just a few things that evoke intense emotions in some people. For those who experience a persistent, unreasonable, and excessive fear, they may have what experts consider to be a “phobia,” according to the definition found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). When one or more objects, places or situations trigger a reaction, it’s called specific phobia–the most common of three classifications under phobia, which also includes social phobia (fear of being judged or embarrassed) and agoraphobia (fear of open spaces).

If you suffer from a phobia, you may change your life to accommodate your fear, says Anu Asnaani, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. For example, someone with a specific phobia of dogs (or cynophobia) may skip their best friend’s birthday party where the four-legged fur-balls will be present. Phobia, unlike normal anxiety, is irrational and extreme. Rather than ask the pet owners to keep their pooches on leashes, the person will simply opt to miss out on what otherwise could have been a fun social gathering celebrating someone they love.

What causes a phobia? Both nature and nurture. “If your parents have a predisposition to a fear of heights or a fear of flying that behavior can be learned,” she says. A traumatic situation, like being bit by a dog as a kid, can also morph into a phobia, she adds. Other times, a genetic predisposition puts you at an increased risk, but mostly it’s a combination of inheritance and the environment.

Related: Can Mindfulness Really Reduce Pain?

Is fear holding you back? The DSM-5 estimates 7 to 9 percent (that’s up to 22 million) of Americans suffer from phobias of some kind, such as the subtle yet powerful ones outlined below. The good news: Exposure therapy–a type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which involves slowly exposing someone to their fear over time–is incredibly effective in treating all phobias, Asnaani says. “Teach your body to sit in the presence of something that makes you scared without running away until your anxiety naturally comes down on its own,” she says. Also, consider practicing a relaxation technique, like this meditation, to help regain your calm. Lastly, talk to your primary care physician or a mental health professional about other therapy options to help quiet your phobias and fears so you can live a bigger, bolder life.

5 Phobias You May Not Realize Affect You

1. Social Phobia: Also referred to as social anxiety disorder, social phobia affects about 10 percent of Americans, Asnaani says. What makes this group particularly uneasy: “Being negatively evaluated by other people and being seen as deficient socially in some way,” she says. You may worry that others think you’re stupid, unattractive, or incompetent, she notes. While this level of discomfort rears its ugly head in all sorts of situations, it’s most commonly seen in public speaking scenarios. People with social phobia may also avoid anything that has to do with other people, including asking questions or eating in front of others, or even using public restrooms.

The advent of technology has made it easier for socially phobic people to get by, Asnaani says. Today, you can work from home (limiting real interaction with people) and even avoid social settings, such as grocery stores thanks to online food shopping services. Texting also limits the need for real-life conversation. This presents an issue when trying to re-engage socially phobic people into the world. “You lose important social interaction that we believe keeps us human,” she says.

Supermarket Shoppers Denounce Homophobic Act With Tender Kisses

Some LGBT patrons at a British supermarket spoke out against homophobia in a truly beautiful way this weekend.

About 200 people staged a mass “kissathon,” Aug. 13 at Sainsbury’s in East London in defense of a gay couple who had reportedly been removed from the store after a customer complained that they had been “touching inappropriately” days earlier, The Guardian reports. Thomas Rees, 32, and boyfriend Joshua Bradwell, 25, had been simply holding hands at the time

Rees shared his frustrations about the incident in a strongly-worded tweet Aug. 8, which received more than 250 retweets and 600 likes.

The store responded to the tweet with an apology and a 10-pound (approximately $ 12.88 in U.S. dollars) voucher, the BBC reports. But Rees said he wasn’t satisfied, noting that he was hoping for a phone call from a shop employee explaining how staff are trained in diversity.

“I have nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about. I shouldn’t be removed from the store,” Rees said. He went on to note that he “feel[s] for the security guard because he was clearly unable or poorly equipped to handle these situations.”

When demonstrators arrived at the store Saturday, they set up audio speakers playing songs by Diana Ross and Donna Summer before filling the aisles. After a short “countdown,” they began kissing passionately amidst the canned goods and produce.

“We never set out to demonize a supermarket or a security team,” Rees told the crowd, as seen in the video above. “Our intentions were simple: to highlight that, unfortunately, in 2016, homophobia still exists. No matter what or how you identify or who you love, it’s a human right to express that love as you see fit.”

The supermarket’s staff appeared to take the kissathon in stride. A spokesperson for the chain described the event as “really great” in an interview with The Guardian, calling it “an important opportunity for the community to show their support.”

“We do our best to make sure everyone feels welcome in our stores but occasionally we make mistakes,” the spokesperson said. “We are working hard to make sure lessons are learnt.”

What a beautiful, loving way to speak out against discrimination!

How To Help Victims Of Louisiana Floods

President Barack Obama declared a federal emergency on Sunday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where floods have killed at least six people and displaced tens of thousands of people from their homes

More than 20,000 residents have been rescued, according to ABC, and 12,000 people are in shelters.

The Louisiana National Guard has been deployed to assist in rescue efforts and federal aid is being made available. The city is also relying on help from organizations and individuals.

Anyone who survived Hurricane Katrina can understand the sense of loss our neighbors are experiencing right now,” Marlin Gusman, head of the Orleans Parish Sheriff, said in a release. “We all need to pitch in and render aid to these storm victims.

“Anyone who survived Hurricane Katrina can understand the sense of loss our neighbors are experiencing right now,” Marlin Gusman, head of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, said in a release. “We all need to pitch in and render aid to these storm victims.”

Here’s how you can support the victims of the Louisiana floods.

This list is being updated.

1. Support Local Emergency Relief Efforts

United Way of Southeast Louisiana is providing flood victims with food, clothing and counseling, according to its website. The organization will continue to provide long-term support as communities recover and rebuild.

The Salvation Army’s facilities in Baton Rouge were flooded, but the organization is still helping residents in need. It’s providing mobile feeding units, hygiene kits and other support.

The Louisiana Red Cross is providing shelter to evacuees at 19 Red Cross and community-run shelters. It’s also offering meals, and emotional support.

Red Cross volunteers across the country ― from Texas and Tennessee to Missouri and Connecticut ― have also stepped up to help, traveling to Louisiana to assist with disaster relief on the ground.

2. If You’re Local, Volunteer To Help

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has called on volunteers to help flood victims, according to a message he tweeted.

He suggested people reach out to the Red Cross to assist with the group’s efforts, or sign up with the state’s volunteer service, Volunteer Louisiana.

The group connects volunteers with agencies that assist in response and recovery efforts. It currently has opportunities for people with boats or medical training, but will continue to accept a range of volunteers in the weeks and months ahead, according to the website.

3. Help Get Food And Clothing To Evacuees

The Second Harvest Food Bank, a group that is dedicated to fighting hunger in South Louisiana, is distributing thousands of pounds of food, water and supplies to flood victims, according to the group’s website.

Local residents can also help by dropping off non-perishable food items, such as canned vegetables, rice, cereal, or peanut butter, at their facilities.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s office is accepting donations of clean clothing for flood victims.

Clothing can be delivered to the Sheriff’s Office at 819 South Broad Street. Learn more here.

4. Care For Animals Affected By A Flooded Shelter

After the Denham Springs Animal Shelter was flooded, another organization, Animal Rescue New Orleans (ARNO), stepped in to help. ARNO, which was founded in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, is asking local volunteers to temporarily house cats or dogs displaced by the flooding in Denham Springs, according to ARNO’s Facebook post.

“Imagine the heartbreak of rescuing all of these wonderful animals only to have nowhere for them to go,” the Facebook post reads

Foster volunteers would provide day-to-day care and food, but any medical costs would be covered by Animal Rescue New Orleans.
