It’s Time To Stop Calling Black Protesters ‘Unpatriotic’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ― A cell phone video filmed here last week captured two veterans facing off as police in riot gear chased protesters off the interstate, and encapsulated the fight over black “patriotism.”

North Carolina’s largest city has been on edge since a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer shot and killed 43-year-old Keith Scott on Sept. 20. Protesters flooded the city’s streets in the days after his death, demanding justice. On Thursday, demonstrators gathered outside police headquarters and shut down a major highway. Police in riot gear were trying to chase them off the road when the heated, profanity-laden exchange took place.

The video captures an altercation after a black man ― who is not in uniform but is standing with his arms folded along with the police ― pushes one of the protesters who is actively de-escalating the situation.

A second protester lashes out, accusing the black man who’s not in uniform of “trying to impress these white people.”

“You ain’t no fuckin’ hero!” the protester says. “You wanna be a hero? Take yo’ bitch ass overseas like I did!”

The man standing with the police replies that “I did too, son,” and says he spent 13 years with the Marines.

“Then you should know how the fuck we feel!” the protester replies.

The Marine fires back, questioning the veteran’s patriotism: “If you served your country, maybe you should have some.”

My country don’t respect my kind,” the veteran responds.

The protests in Charlotte turned violent at times, with some demonstrators throwing objects at police, breaking store windows and looting. Those incidents might explain why the Marine ― whether he realized it or not ― perceived the black protesters as “unpatriotic.”

In the brief exchange, the Marine suggested that the veteran was being disloyal to his country by joining the demonstrations. The tired question of whether black protesters are “patriotic” has come up repeatedly as activists across the country take on issues of police brutality.

Disrespectful, rowdy and unpatriotic — these labels are often bestowed upon black people who stand up for their rights. Their methods are always criticized, whether they’re marching peacefully, burning flags or breaking windows in stores.

Questioning the patriotism of black protesters has deep historical roots. Shortly after Navy veteran Sammy Younge Jr. was killed for trying to use a “whites-only bathroom” in 1966, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) became the first major civil rights organization to publicly oppose the Vietnam War. The group’s argument was simple: Black men shouldn’t fight for “the desire of the United States government to guarantee free elections abroad” when black people didn’t have rights at home.

“We are in sympathy with, and support, the men in this country who are unwilling to respond to a military draft which would compel them to contribute their lives to United States aggression in Vietnam in the name of the ‘freedom’ we find so false in this country,” they wrote. “We ask, where is the draft for the freedom fight in the United States?”

Both white people and civil rights groups slammed SNCC for being “unpatriotic.”

A prominent current example of such disapproval is the criticism of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Since Kaepernick first refused to stand for the national anthem on Aug. 26, football fans and others have lashed out. One 49ers fan posted a video of himself burning the quarterback’s jersey as the national anthem played in the background, suggesting that denouncing someone like Kaepernick was the truly patriotic thing to do. Even Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said Kaepernick should leave the U.S. if he can’t respect the flag.

But black protesters are often incredibly patriotic ― just maybe not in a way that white America finds comforting. Protest has always been in America’s DNA; the founding fathers protested Great Britain and fought a war to win their freedom.

It’s worth noting that black protesters are far less violent by comparison. They know their God-given rights. They know that, quite often, the liberties given to other Americans are not afforded to them ― like when officers in the Baltimore Police Department regularly stop, frisk and arrest poor black residents without legal cause. Or when a man is shot in the street because cops think he’s got a blunt.

Many Charlotte protesters wore Kaepernick jerseys because they, like the quarterback, want to bring attention the staggering rates at which black people are killed by police. In many of those cases, the black people are unarmed, and the officers are not held accountable. The demonstrators congregated outside of the Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers, on Sunday, taking a knee as the anthem played.

When people question the patriotism of black Americans for not participating in rudimentary customs such as standing for the national anthem, or for not protesting in a way that makes them comfortable, they fail to see why some black folks aren’t very fond of America at the moment.

Black people are disproportionately unemployed, poor and killed during encounters with police. Black people have been forced into segregated neighborhoods (regardless of their household income), and black children are more likely than any other racial group to attend underfunded schools. Those same children are also more harshly disciplined and funneled into the school-to-prison pipeline

So, yeah, some black folks are angry. They’re angry about the lack of equal opportunity and justice for all. Their allegiance is to standing up for their own community ― a point the veteran made in his argument with the Marine.

“Fuck patriotism!” the veteran yelled. “I’ll tell you what I’m patriotic about ― I’m patriotic about this black skin!”

Connect With The World Around You

“Wilderness is not a luxury but necessity of the human spirit.” -Edward Abbey

At a recent conference, I was shown a satirical commercial advertising what they called Nature Rx. “Are you feeling tired, irritable, stressed out?,” a young man asks from a rowboat, setting the stage to spoof the prescription drug ads we’ve gotten so used to seeing. “Well,” he continues, “you might consider nature.” The ad goes on to comically name the unique benefits of nature. “Nature’s been shown to decrease thoughts of worthlessness and increase libido.” At the end, when a soothing voice in a drug ad would typically rattle off a long list of unpleasant side effects that juxtapose the pleasant imagery, the narrator of Nature Rx says, “Side effects may include… a genuine care for yourself, other people and the world we live in, being more pleasant to be around, confidence, authenticity, and honesty.”

The joke works, because it states what we all know – that one of the most effective ways to feel better isn’t made in a factory or bottled in a jar. It doesn’t cost money or require prescriptions and insurance to acquire. We know, and science confirms, just how good nature is for us. We’ve felt firsthand the large impact just a little bit of green space can have on our mood and outlook. Nature has a unique power to quietly incite awe, serenity, and inspiration. And as people are spending more and more time indoors and in front of screens, numerous studies are revealing just how important nature is for our mental and physical well-being.

It’s no surprise that nature has many ways of benefiting our bodies. Studies show that exercising in green spaces had more health benefits than indoor exercise. It can help with healing, as hospital patients exposed to nature actually experienced quicker recoveries. Spending time in nature can even be a predictor of longevity.

Even less surprising are the rewards of nature to our minds. Studies have shown that just five minutes of activity in natural areas improve people’s self-esteem and mood. Other findings revealed that people living in closer proximity to green space had reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression, and that spending time in nature decreased symptoms of dementia in individuals with Alzheimer’s. These are just a few examples of myriad ways nature boosts our mental and physical health.

One of the reasons, nature is so beneficial is that it allows us to feel more present in our own bodies. We tend to experience nature with our senses, drinking in sights, sounds and smells, feeling the earth on our feet and the breeze on our face. These are referred to as “bottom-up” experiences, which are more sensory. For example, with a bottom-up approach, if we see a flower, we may take in its beauty and smell. This is different from a “top-down” experience, in which we are more caught up in our heads. For instance, we may try to name or label the flower rather than experience it with our senses. When we take the latter approach, we start to feel more connected to the world around us and to the present moment, which is an important aspect of mindfulness. This helps us to achieve an inner sense of calm.

Getting out into the natural world encourages this type of interaction. As our mind unclutters, we tend to feel more active and alive. Plus, when we’re outside, we naturally tend to move more, which releases endorphins and further boosts our mood and energy level. These attributes benefit people of all ages, but have particular importance for kids. Children’s accessibility to green space is correlated with them being less impacted by stress, more physically active, and better able to focus and learn.

I could go on and on about the research behind the upsides of getting outside, but perhaps one of nature’s greatest assets is one we can all most relate to on an instinctual level – the way it inspires awe. Most of us can relate to the strange combination of overwhelming comfort and serene exhilaration that comes from witnessing a thing of natural wonder, vastness, or beauty. Experiencing these moments of awe enhances our well-being. In fact, the emotion of awe has been shown to make people feel more empathetic, trusting, generous and humble, which, in turn, improves their relationships.

These findings are inspiring to me personally, because they encourage us to not just connect with the world around us but with a part of ourselves that is more open, in tune, and in sync with how we think and feel. Connecting to nature can help us connect with ourselves, which naturally extends to the people around us. While, many of us struggle to slow down and take the time to make this connection, it’s nice to know that it’s available when we need it. Whether that means sitting in your garden, walking to that park, biking to the ocean, or driving to the mountains, whatever way we can get there, it’s worth it to find ways to get back to nature.

Debunking Myths about Awe

By Maria Polonchek

According to researchers across the country, experiencing awe can lower stress levels, expand our perception of time, and improve social well-being. As a parent, I’m especially intrigued by findings that awe encourages altruism and empathy, discourages entitlement and narcissism, and boosts creativity and academic performance.

Dacher Keltner, a psychology professor at UC Berkeley and a founding director of the GGSC, is the guy to talk to about awe. He co-authored a paper on awe in 2003 considered to be foundational, and has been involved in countless other studies since.

A self-described “transcendence junkie,” I know what awe has meant for me, but I was curious about other people. Who experiences awe? What triggers awe? What does it mean for our children? When I met with Dacher to ask him a few questions, I realized I had a lot of mistaken assumptions about awe–assumptions that many people share, and our culture seems to encourage. In the interview below, he debunks many of those assumptions and presents a view of awe as accessible, plannable, and absolutely essential.

Maria Polonchek: How did you get interested in studying awe?

2015-12-02-1449081000-3827409-MindfulnessandWellBeingatWork.jpg

Dacher Keltner: I was a tense, anxious kid. I have a genetic predisposition towards anxiety that is the antithesis to awe: closed, obsessive, focused on narrow things. My parents had this disastrous divorce and I was on the road to unhappiness. But my parents also created a family context that encouraged me to push the boundaries and expand my mind. My mom is one of the more open people in the world. So I kept having these awe experiences that changed who I was. Going to Europe as a college student and backpacking and certain kinds of psychedelic drugs and rock-and-roll concerts and political experiences–each one moved my needle towards “This is what I should do in life. It’s right here, it has all this power, and I’ve got to study it.”

MP: When we talk about awe, we often refer to being outside, in nature. If you were ranking ways to experience awe, is nature the most common?

DK: We’ve studied that question in cities and cultures around the world and the number-one way people experience awe isn’t nature; it’s other people.

When humans were evolving, what was awe about? Mainly, it was other people’s magnanimity, their generosity: “That guy over there gave me some food.” And they get this rush of awe. When I think back to our hunter-gatherer conditions–unstable food sources, kids dying–the ability to share food is fundamental. If you gave me food when my kid was sick, that would be a sacred moment.

In a worldwide survey of awe experiences, people talk about seeing someone die, seeing a child being born, somebody saving their life or helping them out. And the second most common way is through nature.

It’s so interesting to me because I began this work thinking awe was about religious concepts, or scientific ideas, or poetry or art. Actually, awe’s foundations are in people and nature. It’s secular. Before religion was that stuff.

MP: That’s a completely different way to think about awe.

DK: Developmental psychologists are starting to look at awe, too. Kids are awestruck, they’re constantly amazed by stuff, their minds are blown–why? Essentially, their knowledge system is indicating that the dog or the leaves falling from a tree or this person’s generosity is really important. Their mind attaches a value to that: It’s precious and to be honored. It’s basically saying, “This matters. Wow.” So awe is fundamental to what we learn about the world.

In addition to learning, awe also helps with getting you into social collectives. If our ancestors didn’t get into a social collective, they were done; that’s how we survived. So awe is this all-purpose mechanism that says, “Wow, these are the values that matter to this group. This is how we all move together, through dance and rituals that attach me to this group. I’m awestruck by these things.”

MP: You’re saying that awe is fundamental, but what about people living under financial pressure or other difficult conditions? I think there’s a perception that awe is a luxury that’s not accessible to people without money.

2015-12-02-1449081000-3827409-MindfulnessandWellBeingatWork.jpg

DK: Empirically, from unpublished research coming out of my lab, we know that the less money you make, the more awe you feel. There’s a lot of awe in poor neighborhoods. It’s probably coming from different things, like a Gospel Church, a drumming circle in Oakland, or hip-hop and rap music (the best of it is the best art in the United States).

Awe ultimately is about the sacred and it has no monetary value. You can’t place a dollar amount on Yosemite or a bike ride or singing in a choir or looking at a painting. Money introduces a bunch of calculations and utilities, a mindset that almost counters the experience of awe. Consumerism, spending your day going to Pottery Barn instead of going outdoors, talking to your loved ones about what you can buy together–it’s a waste of time, and that’s what money encourages.

I used to believe that compassion, gratitude, awe–the three big moral sentiments–were for when life’s worked out and you have enough to meet your basic needs. But all of the data suggest that those are fundamental to human society. Thus far, we have data showing the poor are more compassionate, some data showing the poor are more grateful, and now some unpublished data showing the poor are more struck with reverence.

Taking into account the health and social benefits associated with those emotions and with awe, they’re essential to our survival. If kids aren’t feeling awe, their lives will be compromised. If we have a right to happiness, then we should have rights to these emotions. They’re not privileges or luxuries; they’re foundational.

MP: My kids talk to me about the awe they feel, but it’s through these collaborative online games, like building a world together in Minecraft. Is that really legitimate–or are they just trying to get more screen time?

DK: A lot of people feel we’re a little awe-deprived, that new technologies are taking awe out of our lives. I don’t necessarily agree with that.

It’s the “my kid’s rock-and-roll seems dangerous” phenomenon. Everybody knows and kids know that there’s no substitute for the woods and being around great people and having a tactile, palpable personal life.

But most people use technology for a lot of good. My daughters knew about Eric Garner before I did, because their friends said, “Did you see what happened to Eric Garner? Let’s go protest.” That’s awesome. They will know, collectively, about world events faster than I will.

When parents ask me about this, I tell them a few things. First of all, when I was your kid’s age, I spent four hours a day in front of a TV by myself, watching Gilligan’s Island. I didn’t learn anything, but it didn’t damage my brain; I’m going to be an okay human being.

Second of all, kids a generation ago watched TV four or five hours a day. Now they do two hours of gaming and apps. What they’re doing is more participatory. They’re filming and creating stuff. As humans, we like sharing knowledge.

MP: If my kids are experiencing awe in a way that’s so different from me, what can I do to understand their experience and connect with them?

DK: I used to struggle with something similar: How do I get my kids to be compassionate? I love compassion. I think it’s as important as awe.

Kids will have their own specific version of awe, but what you can do is plant the seed. Bring up the idea by talking about awe or pointing out the times you feel awe. Then they’ll know that mom values awe. And that idea will become a frame or organizing node in their minds; when they feel awe, they’ll realize it’s the same feeling you talked about.

Cultures evolve through innovation. It’s their job to be different, to find awe in new ways. We want our kids to value nature and generosity, but they’re going to do different things by design. Parents should honor what their kids find to be awe-inspiring.

MP: Many people these days think of awe as something unexpected, out of the blue. But what I’m hearing you say is that you can actively pursue awe.

DK: There’s an old idea about human passion, that it’s all a mystery; it washes over you like an ocean breeze, it’s unpredictable. But when people start hearing and reading about awe, my hunch is that they’re figuring out slots in their schedule to go get some.

I think it’s provocative and true to challenge people to schedule awe. Hey, you want this? Go schedule it. Most of the time, if I go volunteer at a prison, I feel awe. If I go hiking with my daughter, I’ll have a little piece of it.

Chade-Meng Tan, who cofounded Search Inside Yourself, advocates one minute of mindfulness a day to start. For awe, that means I should take the time to go outside my office and look at a tree and feel a little burst of awe. I didn’t believe in that approach at first, but seeing people respond to Meng convinced me. With one minute a day, you’ll build something. I think that’s true of awe as well.

Peasants and the Art of Farming eBook

Peasants and the Art of Farming eBook

Peasants and the Art of Farming: A Chayanovian Manifesto focuses on the structure and dynamics of peasant farms and the historically highly variable relations that govern the processes of labour and production within peasant farms. Jan Douwe van der Ploeg argues that peasant agriculture can play an important, if not central, role in augmenting food production and creating sustainability. However, peasants today, as in the past, are materially neglected. By building on the pioneering work of Chayanov, this book seeks to address this neglect and to show how important peasants are in the ongoing struggles for food, food sustainability and food sovereignty.

Canadian Professor Homa Hoodfar Freed From Iranian Jail

Canadian-Iranian academic Homa Hoodfar is now free after spending three months in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison, according to a statement from Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Hoodfar, 65, who holds Canadian, Irish and Iranian citizenship, and is a professor emerita at Montreal’s Concordia University, was arrested in June on charges of collaborating with a hostile government against national security and of propaganda against the state. She was in Tehran conducting historical research on women’s involvement in Iranian elections, according to Amnesty International.

Iranian media accused Hoodfar of “fomenting a feminist revolution” following her arrest. Her family called the allegations “trumped up,” and an international campaign including numerous academics and religious scholars lobbied for her freedom.

In August, Hoodfar was hospitalized and “could hardly walk or talk,” according to a statement from her family. The family alleged that she was not receiving treatment for a serious neurological condition. The incident added renewed media focus on Hoodfar’s imprisonment, as her family sought greater public exposure for the case.

The government of Canada worked to secure Hoodfar’s freedom for months, but refused to discuss the case in detail while it was active. However, Trudeau said in Monday’s statement that Canada closely collaborated with Oman, Italy and Switzerland on achieving Hoodfdar’s freedom.

“Canadians are relieved that Dr. Hoodfar has been released from jail and will soon be reunited with her family, friends and colleagues,” Trudeau said.

“The Government of Canada has been actively and constructively engaged at the highest levels in Dr. Hoodfar’s case – since her ordeal began – working for her release and return to Canada,” he continued.

Iran released Hoodfar on “humanitarian grounds,” citing her illness, the BBC reported Iranian state media as saying.

Hoodfar is one of many dual nationals Iran has imprisoned in recent months on vague charges. The State Department issued a renewed travel warning this year for Iran, specifically warning Iranian-Americans on the risks of traveling to the country.

Iran does not recognize dual citizenship, and some analysts view the arrests of dual nationals like Hoodfar as a political tool that hard-liners may be using to deter foreign influence and keep Iran isolated.

The Solution State Of Mind

As you begin to grow in this awareness of the Emergence principles and how life really operates, you start to discover that what you do in and of itself is not going to determine the outcomes you get.

Ultimately, as the old metaphysical axiom says, to he or she who is right in mind they can do all the wrong things, and it will often still turn out right, but to he or she who is wrong in mind they can do all the right things, and it will still turn out wrong. We see that even as Einstein said, “You cannot solve a problem at the level of thinking that created it.”

We understand in metaphysics and quantum physics, that the frequency or the vibration that you’re at is what actually determines the outcome. The good that you want, the answer, the solution, the opportunity, the abundance, etc. it’s already here. Much like you are inundated with radio broadcasts right now, and in the midst of those broadcast somewhere your favorite music is playing, but it’s not yet a manifest part of your experience. When you tune the dial of your frequency so that that receiver or frequency matches the frequency where that music is playing, that station becomes manifest. You have what I like to say a manifest-station. The music was already happening, but you had to make it welcome. You had to dial into that same frequency. The distance between you and your music is a distance in frequency.

The same is true for your solutions. For whatever challenge you face, the solution is a reality that already exists, but it exists at a higher or different frequency than the frequency of the problem.

Problem, when you understand it means emblem – it’s a symbol. A problem or challenge is a symbol of a state of consciousness, a particular frequency, and you can never solve a problem, any more than you can solve a frequency.
If you’re turned into station K-LACK, and it’s playing the blues all day, or it’s gossiping and complaining and talking about all this negative stuff in the world, making you feel horrible, that’s a problem. You can’t solve that problem at that frequency. You can’t solve that frequency. That’s what’s playing on that station. So, how do you solve it? You have to tune up the dial to station K-RICH, to a higher frequency.

When you tune out of K-LACK into K-RICH, the problems you are experiencing on K-LACK they’re no longer there! That particular music becomes unmanifest. It goes back into the invisible, inaudible state that it was to begin with, and the music that you really want to hear, that beat of abundance, that symphony of success, now becomes manifest. It becomes a part of your experience.

So a problem cannot be solved. It exists. It’s a frequency. Just like ice cannot be solved at the level of temperature where ice exists; 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below, you have ice. No matter what you do to get rid of that problem, you’ll still have the problem if you’re still living at 32 degrees. You can pour hot water on it, but what’s going to happen? It’s going to become more ice. You can chip it away. What’s going to happen? Condensation will produce more ice.

That’s why so many of our attempts to solve problems individually, or in a community, in the government, a corporation or a culture, etc., don’t often work, because we are still at the same frequency, and just moving things around at that level.

We’re reorganizing the people, places, and conditions, but it’s still coming from that level of thinking, from that perception of lack, limitation, fear, or separation. We may try to cover over all of that by controlling or manipulating more, by adding more on top of it, or by having stricter rules… All of that is this substructure of coping, survival, and defense mechanisms we put on top off this vibration or frequency that’s creating the problem. What we find is that the same problem breaks out in new ways.

So how do you deal with it then? You must rise above that temperature. When you rise above 32 degrees, what happens to the ice? You don’t solve the ice – the ice dissolves.

When you tune to a higher frequency on the station you don’t solve the problem or change the station of K-LACK. That’s still broadcasting, but it dissolves out of your experience, and what manifests is that higher frequency you’re now tuned into. That’s also why Einstein said, “Arrows of hate have been shot in my direction many times, but they no longer can touch me or hurt me, because they come from a world I no longer inhabit.”

At the vibration of love, hatred doesn’t exist. It’s not that love solves hatred. It’s that hatred is an expression. You can’t solve hatred at the level of hatred, which is why two wrongs don’t make a right. It’s also why you can’t fight fire with fire (except in the forest, which actually in that case fire works.) The key is that that’s why so many of our attempts to go to war and try to crush terrorism doesn’t work, because we’re still operating, in many cases, at the same level of the problem. What you resist persists, what you fight you fuel.

So, to move into the solution state of mind, you must understand that all solutions exist outside of the frequency or circle of the problem, and you want to, as quickly and easily as possible, move yourself into the frequency of the solution. You want to bring yourself back into a congruent, receptive solution state of mind. That’s where the answers are, where evolution, real healing and growth happens.

To support you in mastering this, listen to the in-depth podcast on the subject, where we break it down and put it into real-life practice TODAY. This will be a real game-changer.

To Your Emergence!

Tanzanian Children Are The World’s Fittest While American Kids Are Among The Least

Tanzanian, Icelandic, Estonian, Norwegian and Japanese children are the world’s fittest while Mexican, Peruvian, Latvian, and American kids are the least fit. That’s according to a new study by Justin Lang, a PhD candidate at the University of Ottawa, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Lang and researchers from Australia and the United States analyzed how children between the ages of 9 and 17 in 50 countries performed on a 20 meter (66 feet) running test, known in Australia as the “beep test.” The children run as many 20-meter shuttles back and forth as they can at an increasingly fast pace, as a way to measure their maximum aerobic power.

Looking at the aerobic capacity of children is important for the overall population’s health. “Kids who are aerobically fit tend to be healthy; and healthy kids are apt to be healthy adults,” said Lang.

Lang and his colleagues also found that, in developing countries, when certain socioeconomic indicators improved, performance on the running test worsened. In developed countries, the opposite was the case.

For instance, the higher a developing country’s level of urbanization or “human development index”—a score based on quality of life and prosperity—the worse its kids performed on the test.

This, according to Lang, is an indication of a society in the middle of a “physical activity transition,” the point when a population becomes wealthier and is able to expend less energy on things like getting food or commuting.

“The evidence of a physical activity transition is similar to a double-edged sword,” Lang said. “The difference in developing countries is that these transitions are occurring at a rapid rate and developing countries simply don’t have the infrastructures in place to cope with the burden of chronic disease in addition to the prevalent infectious diseases in these parts of the world,” he said.

It’s hard to say exactly how many countries are going through this transition, according to Lang. But Africa, which has the world’s second fastest rate of urbanization after Asia, and where pockets of a middle class are expanding, may be especially vulnerable.

Among all countries though, Lang and his researchers found that higher income inequality was accompanied by lower performance on the test.

“Countries with a large gap between rich and poor often have large subpopulations of extremely poor individuals. Poverty is linked to bad health outcomes—one of which is aerobic fitness.”

Survival in the Shadows

Survival in the Shadows

The remarkable true story of two German Jewish families that survived against all odds while hiding in the heart of the Nazi capital In January 1943, unable to flee Germany, the four members of the Arndt family went underground to avoid deportation to Auschwitz. Ellen Lewinsky and her mother, Charlotte, joined them; a year later, Bruno Gumpel arrived. Hiding in a small factory near Hitler’s bunker, without identification cards or food-ration stamps, they were dependent on German strangers for survival. When Russian soldiers finally rescued the group in April 1945, the families were near death from starvation. But their will to live triumphed and two months later, four of the survivors-Erich Arndt and Ellen Lewinsky, and Ruth Arndt and Bruno Gumpel-reunited in a double wedding ceremony. Survival in the Shadows chronicles the previously untold story of the largest group of German Jews to have survived hiding in Berlin through the final and most deadly years of the Holocaust. Relayed to Barbara Lovenheim by three survivors from the group, the riveting story is a touching portrayal of the bravery of these seven Jews, and a heartfelt acknowledgment of the fortitude and humanity of the compassionate Germans who kept them alive.

“Footsteps of Liberty & Revolt”

“Footsteps of Liberty & Revolt”

The late eighteenth century was one of the most exciting and unsettling periods in European history, with the shock-waves of the French Revolution rippling around the world. As this collection of essays by leading scholars shows, Wales was no exception. From political pamphlets to a Denbighshire folk-play, from bardic poetry to the remodelling of the Welsh landscape itself, responses to the revolutionary ferment of ideas took many forms. We see how Welsh poets and preachers negotiated complex London–Wales networks of patronage and even more complex issues of national and cultural loyalty; and how the landscape itself is reimagined in fiction, remodelled à la Rousseau, while it rapidly emptied as impoverished farming families emigrated to the New World. Drawing on a wealth of vibrant material in both Welsh and English, much of it unpublished, this collection marks another important contribution to ‘four nations’ criticism, and offers new insights into the tensions and flashpoints of Romantic-period Wales.

Trump Tells Netanyahu He Would Recognize Jerusalem As Israel’s Capital

WASHINGTON, Sept 25 (Reuters) – U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Sunday told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that if elected, the United States would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the campaign said, marking a potential dramatic shift in U.S. policy on the issue.

During the meeting that lasted more than an hour at Trump Tower in New York, Trump told Netanyahu that under his administration, the United States would “recognize Jerusalem as the undivided capital of the State of Israel.”

While Israel calls Jerusalem its capital, few other countries accept that, including the United States. Most nations maintain embassies in Tel Aviv.

Palestinians want East Jerusalem, captured by Israel in a 1967 war, as capital of the state they aim to establish alongside Israel in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

During the closed-door meeting, the campaign said that Trump agreed with Netanyahu that peace in the Middle East could only be achieved when “the Palestinians renounce hatred and violence and accept Israel as a Jewish State.”

According to a readout of the meeting from the campaign, the two discussed “at length” Israel’s border fence, cited by Trump in reference to his own controversial immigration policies, which include building a wall on the U.S.- Mexico border and temporarily banning Muslims from entering the country.

Other regional issues, including the fight against Islamic State, U.S. military assistance to Israel ― “an excellent investment” ― and the Iran nuclear deal, which both parties have criticized, were also discussed.

What The Buddha Would Say To Mr. Trump

If a bull goes straight when the herd is crossing a road, then they will all go straight because he leads the way. The same among people. If the one who is thought to be the highest lives in goodness, the others do so too. The whole realm lives happily if the ruler lives rightly. The Buddha

This is true when the leader is virtuous and honest. But Donald Trump is leading his followers into a quagmire and they don’t even know it. He is using the most destructive of qualities–greed, hatred and delusion–to gain power and prestige. This is the behavior of an egomaniac who thrives at others’ expense.

We are not presuming to know what the Buddha might say to Mr. Trump, just as we don’t presume to know what might be said to any of us. But the Buddha clearly taught about the dangers of greed, hatred and ignorance, what he called the three poisons, that Trump displays frequently. Where greed grabs our desires, hatred uses fear to incite insecurity and then blames everyone else, while ignorance clouds our vision.

The three fires of greed, hatred and ignorance destroy the mind from which they are born. The Buddha

The mind is everything. What you think you become. The Buddha

Greed has many relatives, such as ambition, self-centeredness, pride, grasping and clinging, giving rise to dissatisfaction, irritation, frustration and anger. The craving to have and possess stops us from giving; it generates a fear of not having. Donald Trump personifies greed in his desperate desire to win at all costs, no matter how he does it. For instance, he insists on flying aboard his luxury jet, rather than a more practical airplane, at a cost to taxpayers of millions of dollars.

Hate is destructive, indiscriminate, like a snake it can rise up out of nowhere and attack. It is most seen in prejudice, whether against different races, political beliefs, or sexual preferences. When we are fixed in the belief that we are right, then anything that questions or threatens that belief becomes the enemy and must be eliminated. Hatred’s many bedfellows include criticism, sarcasm, misogyny, and racism. Need we say more?

The Buddha pointed out that such hatred becomes our own worst enemy for no matter how much we try to annihilate the hated one, the hate remains inside us, slowly destroying and eating away at our own happiness.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; while you are the one who gets burned. The Buddha

Abhorrence towards others is based on the belief that we are all separate from each other, that I am more important than you. This breaks friendships and families, while creating self-righteousness and arrogance. Prejudice closes our heart and shuts down our sensitivity.

The moment that you think of doing harm to someone, that thought harms you first. Unless you hate yourself, you can’t hate others. If you love others, that means that you create the feeling of love within you first, and then you offer the love to others. Your thoughts pass through your entire system, and are expressed through your mouth and through your hands and actions. Without thinking, you cannot speak or act. So the harmful thought, from its very origin, spoils your system. In other words, you can’t hit anyone else without striking yourself. Sri Swami Satchidananda

Where hatred closes our heart, delusion makes us believe there is a permanent, separate and fixed ‘me’ so that we take ourselves very seriously. It belies a lack of awareness, especially of anything outside ourselves. This is the ignorance of our essential connectedness with all others.

The heart is like a garden. It can grow compassion or fear. What seeds will you grow there? The Buddha

What You Can Learn From Talking To A 90-Year Old

2016-09-25-1474825017-4549814-L1010393.jpg
Pretty good shape for 90 – must be those G&Ts

Last week we celebrated my father-in-law’s 90th birthday.

There was a time when even getting to 90 was a major achievement, and if someone were lucky enough to make it to 90, they were generally frail, wheelchair bound and barely aware of the celebration going on around them.

I remember when my great grandmother hit 90. She was in a nursing home, bent over, in a wheelchair. She barely knew where she was, or who she was. That was some time ago.

For my father-in-law, Ken Pattenden, nothing could be further from the truth. The man still stands a lean and wiry six foot plus (as I am only 5’6″, I find this alone intimidating), has a full head of hair, a crushing handshake, an athlete’s build and more than all his marbles. I suppose it’s a tribute to genetics and clean living.

In any event, to celebrate the event, we all gathered in one of those massive old English country houses (did I mention that he lives in the UK?), and gathered the family for a weekend long party.

Ken was born in 1926, (you don’t have to be a math major to have figured that one out), one year before Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly across the Atlantic. Lindbergh’s flight took 33½ hours in a tiny, one-seater, single engine plane made of wood and cloth, lacking even a front window. It was hailed as the ‘wonder of the world’.

Our trans-Atlantic flight took about 6 hours. We slept most of the way in the reclining beds and we watched a movie. They also served us two meals. Lindbergh brought along some sandwiches.

The world has changed a lot since 1927, when Lindbergh made his historic flight. Sometimes, we lose sight of that.

This remarkable transformation, all of it, took place within my father-in-law’s lifetime.

At dinner, I asked Ken about his experiences in the Second World War. He served in the British navy, assigned to Alexandria, in Egypt. At that time, Britain was still the British Empire and Britain ruled one-quarter of the world’s surface and also ruled one-quarter of the world’s population. Today, they are down to a few islands, and maybe Scotland, if they stay lucky.

But, prior to the war and signing up with the Navy, Ken had grown up and lived in London. This was during the Blitz, the German bombing of the city, and he recounted that as well – walking past houses that had been simply blown to oblivion overnight, and never knowing when or if you were going to get hit.

As we chatted, his wife of 60 plus years, Anne, who was sitting next to him also joined in.

She recalled that as a child in a small English village, they had no running water. Her mother had to go to the well in the center of the village and fill jugs each day. They had no central heating – all of the heat, and the cooking, was provided by an open fire. They had no indoor plumbing, but rather an outhouse behind the house. And no electricity, at least in the earliest days. They had no refrigerator, but instead an ice box that would, when it was available, be stocked with a block of ice to keep food cool.

She remembered the first car in the village, the first phone. She went on to become a head teacher. Ken became an accountant.

The transitions in the course of their lives, from the time they were born until the present is, well, mind-boggling. The changes they have seen and personally experienced represent a transformation so massive that, frankly, personal computers and iPhones (he is quite good with his), which we think of as major are, in fact, minor events.

When Ken and Anne were born, the world was, in many ways, far closer to what it had been for more than 500 years in the past, maybe a thousand. Most transport was done by animal power or walking. Agriculture was largely driven by animal power as well. Modern medicine was virtually unknown. You could die of a simple infection. Penicillin only came into public use in 1942! Last year Ken had laser cataract surgery and a few years before, an artificial replacement knee.

Automobiles, airplanes, telephones, refrigeration, running water, central heating, electricity, modern medicine, television, radio – the changes that their one lifetime has encompassed was probably the greatest transformation that any generation has ever seen, or for that matter, is ever likely to see.

We like to complain that ‘things are bad’. This is particularly true in this election cycle. Things are terrible. Things have never been worse.

What we are lacking is a sense of history.

Talk to a 90 year old the next chance you get. I think you will see that things are not quite so bad after all.

An Economy that Grows Anger

This election season has revealed a lot of anger in the electorate directed against establishment thinking and establishment figures in each party. Ted Cruz defied the Republican establishment for not living up to traditional values. Donald Trump continues to defy the Republican establishment for not being tough enough on immigration and trade deals. Bernie Sanders still calls for a revolution against the establishments in both parties for not standing up to corporate interests. Hillary Clinton is in the unenviable position of defending the status quo with credentials as an adept institutional player. She is the Washington insider standing against the anti-establishment storm.
And then there were two. The home stretch pits Trump and Clinton against each other with each summoning the highest disapproval ratings of any major party candidates in history. More anger, now about the choices, with many voters lining up against Clinton on trustworthiness and against Trump on character. Our current political scene operates with a Hollywood-type “anger management” approach to outbursts of anger. While Trump hopes to ride the wave of anger to victory, Clinton presents the calm alternative, with promises to manage the maddening issues. It’s a campaign between Stoking the Outrage and The Empathy of the Well-Connected.
Meanwhile, there is little attention to why so many people are angry in a country that seems to have so much going for it. The US enjoys almost unrivaled general prosperity compared to most nations; the unemployment rate is relatively low; inflation has been moderate on average. But this portrait from numbers belies lurking structural problems.
The economy provides abundant ways for the wealthy to become wealthier, while the working class hangs on with frequent underemployment and many citizens too discouraged to enter the statistical count of joblessness. The bipartisan anger against Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf showed the depth of outrage over the sense of entitlement among the rich and powerful. Entry into the cutting-edge of the economy requires years of education, which is becoming so expensive that it reinforces the feeling that it takes money (or enormous debt) to make money. And the relatively low retail prices that consumers do enjoy often come with outsourced jobs, which bring short-term price gains but long-term community erosion; meanwhile, prices on things that cannot be outsources, not just education, but also housing and health care, continued increase dramatically.
The anger emerges less from outbursts over immediate suffering than from perceptions that opportunities are slipping away. The reason for the low candidate approval ratings is that this looks like an election between a sensible and well-informed Democrat defending a crazy system and a sometimes crazy-sounding Republican who brashly calls for changes as yet undisclosed.
Beneath all these structural issues is a commitment to constant growth, growth that cannot be sustained in the long run without some new smart choices. In the face of consensus over extravagant growth, the candidates are caught in a wrestling match over claims to the best ways to achieve great growth; and they spend even more time pointing out the faults that keep their constituency from getting its piece of the growth pie.
They are like crabs in an unsustainable boiling pot with each one trying to stop the other one from getting out using its favored path. But each way out has to go through the boil: the values path blames the nation’s straying from traditional morality; the toughness path blames leaders for not being aggressive enough in staking America’s claim to supremacy; progressives blame corporations for seizing more power even as citizens crave their goods; mainstream Republicans blame the government for inhibiting the ability of business to prosper even if at the expense of natural or community well-being.
Meanwhile, the pot of constant growth keeps boiling away, with more growth the sole measure of a better life. Some growth is good, but as with anything, it has its excesses. The goal should be healthy growth. In the language of economics, growth is healthy as long as the benefits exceed the costs, but when the generation of goods and services becomes massive, the costs far outstrip the benefits. So excessive growth can be unhealthy. In fact, in medicine, it’s called cancer.
We now have parties that agree on extravagant growth and agree to overlook its major problems. Clinton calls for taxes and laws to pay for programs that will stimulate growth in domestic jobs and maintain protections for workers. Trump suggests that a wall keeping out Mexican immigrants and his tough negotiations on trade deals will make the economy “great again.” Meanwhile, constant growth will deliver its paybacks in the cost of government programs coping with its side effects, the pressure on companies to engage in harmful practices to keep profits flowing, and the tendencies to extract prosperity from powerless people or landscapes.
If we didn’t crave as much growth, there would be little need for the candidates’ policy proposals to cope with its problems. Politics could turn to its prime goal of stimulating creativity and cooperation to sustain well-being and prevent assaults on its health. The pioneer economic theorist John Stuart Mill observed that with less growth, there would be “as much room for improving the Art of Living and much more likelihood of its being improved.”
A media celebrity recently said, “being paid more than you’re actually worth is the American Dream.” That’s an expression from the high wave of extravagant growth, and when expressed by a celebrity, it shows our aspirations. This outlook sets a model for all of us smaller fry to try to live up to that overabundant standard. And there is plenty of media attention to stars whose commodity is fame and who circulate in a whole different economy of luxury and privilege.
The nation’s first Republican President presented a different picture of the American Dream based on getting an honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work. Abraham Lincoln recognized that people will rise and fall to different stations in life, but those differences in status should emerge, he hoped, based on equal opportunity and individual merit rather than special privilege. This vision of democratic social life requires a government that insures fair play for all, and it calls for individuals to bring ingenuity and planning to their efforts to make their own living or become economic players in their communities or beyond.
Lincoln expressed this vision at a time when many other Americans sought to achieve the American Dream by extracting their income from the work of others. While Lincoln presented a model for healthy growth, slaveholders sought unhealthy growth through slavery. Today, media celebrity is promoting unhealthy growth through extravagance.
Americans agree that the presidential choices are not perfect, but in that contest as in the down-ticket races, citizens would do well to support candidates who support the health of the economy and society, not just constant growth.

Vital Lessons Learned From The Chelsea Bombing From A Chelsea Psychologist

The following post was created for Self-Therapy Month at Techealthiest. This is Part One.

When frightening events like the Chelsea bombing and the additional planting of nine other bombs from New Jersey to New York occur, we have no choice but to create a mental file in which to place our thoughts, feelings and images associated with the attack.

It has to be stored in your memory one way or another.

Those of us who live or work in New York City have been more directly affected by this nerve-shaking attack, but its explosive effects are, without a doubt, far-reaching, as news, commentary and images have been repeatedly catapulted from the media toward our eyes and ears, which essentially forces us to make sense of what happened.

At worst, you’ve been vicariously traumatized by the bombing (or directly traumatized if you were on 23rd Street that Saturday night). The more common reaction among is to be shaken and disturbed in the days following the bombing, followed by a few weeks of talking about the bombing with your social and work circles.

Social media essentially guarantees that you’ll have to grapple with disturbing thoughts about the attack, but for how long will  these thoughts linger in your mind?

This leads me to the question I’ve been pondering since the event occurred: What is considered a “healthy” way to reflect upon the Chelsea bombing way after the event, as well other terror attacks that have occurred (and God forbid might happen again)?

Here are four things to be remembered about the attack that will promote health and personal responsibility.

1) Use the memory of this event to remind you of all that you currently have, most notably things that money can’t buy.

You actually are rich because you have everything you need right now. Dare to be more thankful than you’ve been of late. Let the memory of the terror attack spark a feeling of gratitude toward the people in life who are invested in your happiness AND the people who don’t seem invested in your happiness.

It’s just too easy to lose touch with what matters most. Life can change in a split second. Don’t forget that but it’s not healthy to think about this idea all of the time because it can turn to anxiety if it becomes an obsession.  See this horrible event as a beautiful opportunity to be reminded of all that you have, especially your freedom, friends, health, family or whatever matters most to you.

2) Think twice…three times…a thousand times about the consequences of spreading hatred before you utter a single word.

There are two hugely important points here. First, on a personal level, when you spread hatred, you’re killing the cells in your body. You lose. A part of you dies. The spread of word venom is an artificial way to expand your ego by diminishing others. It certainly makes you depressed and it pushes people away from you, except for people who either are as angry as you are or whose lives are devoid of meaning and are looking for something to believe in.

Second, the expression of hatred on the web can cause real harm to people. There are people out there who feed off of hatred. Keep in mind that social media creates a thunderclap that spreads like wildfire through the web. For people who feel powerless, this is a place to gain a synthetic sense of power. Hatred on social media spreads like cancer, and makes everyone sick.

Please know that if you’re constantly ranting on Facebook about Trump or Clinton or any person or group with whom you have a major problem, most of your “friends” are viewing you as crazy. They probably contemplated defriending you, but they’re either lazy or they don’t want to have to randomly face your scariness in the supermarket or at your next high school reunion. Instead, they’ve subtly unfollowed you and connected your current venomous behavior to a past memory of you being something negative. Please know that I’m referring to the expression of hatred, not anger, the latter of which can often be healthy and productive to express.

3) The collective American attention span is shrinking at an alarming rate.

The speed at which information travels makes us more likely to be satiated at a faster rate. In other words, you’ve probably been bombarded by news of the bombing so much that you eventually either tune it out completely or you go numb when you hear about it. The danger here is that you’re likely to miss the value inherent in remembering what happened and what could have been.

How do you counter a natural tendency for your emotional reactions toward the Chelsea bombing to become watered down as a result of social media satiation? At minimum, make a reminder to mention the bombing at your next major family, religious or other gathering. Talk about the event in terms of how it affected you and what you now feel thankful for. Another strategy is to find a way to express your thoughts and feelings about the event though a creative modality that you repeat even months after the disturbing event. For example, if you dabble in acrylic art, create a series of paintings over time which serve as an expression of your inner experience of the incident.

4) Crowdsourcing is a weapon against terror.

Yes, social media (and the media in general) spread hatred, false beliefs and dangerous calls to action faster than the world as ever known. How little it takes for an individual to incite violence on the web is scary, but various forms media can also (obviously) be used to spread good and inform people of important developments. Case in point: the capture of Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the Chelsea bomber. Harry Bains had been watching CNN, which allowed him to recognize Rahimi who was sleeping next to Bain’s bar in Linden, New Jersey. This is loosely an example of how crowdsourcing can aid in spreading valuable information to combat terror.

Who knows what the next incident will be? Use the internet as a way to inform people if something suspicious is happening in front of you. You have the loudest megaphone ever created in the form of Twitter and Facebook.

There’s much more to say here, but it’s time to digest and return to this topic soon. This essentially reflects the optimal strategy. Ponder the horrible events that occurred. Learn from it. Vow to appreciate life more at least in the short term. Move on but return to it at a later date. Just don’t forget.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my lessons learned from the Chelsea bombing.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

Asking the Earth

Asking the Earth

The need to produce food without the destructive chemical horrors of much modern farming, for an intelligent use of dwindling natural resources and for humane forms of production is universal, the practice is limited. This book is an account of one, large, instance of success in practice. Twenty-five years ago, Winin Pereira, a nuclear physicist abandoned academia to start a co-operative farm at Alonde in a tribal area north of Bombay. The group experienced, and finally discarded, all the false hopes and promises of Western originated forms of development: ploughs that ploughed too deep, irrigation systems that lowered water tables, fertilizers and pesticides which managed the earth and became so expensive that poorer farmers were dispossessed. Instead they learnt from the adivasai, or tribal people, who have nurtured or been nurtured by foresets for millennia, ways of applying popular knowledge to contemporary problems. This book is a combination of Pereira’s record of achievement of sustainable livelihoods and an account of the farm and its effect on the India around it by a leading British journalist. Taking a Stand on Social Security: Clinton’s Bold Proposal vs. Trump’s Hidden Agenda

AARP has asked all candidates to take a stand on the vital issue of Social Security. In fact, Hillary Clinton and the 2016 Democratic Party Platform have taken a powerful pro-Social Security stand. For that matter, Donald Trump and the Republican Party have taken a Social Security stand, too, though a disturbing one, which they seem to want to keep hidden from view. Their stand, once understood, should concern every Social Security beneficiary now and in the future.

Clinton and the Democrats recognize what most Americans know: Social Security is more important than ever. It is Americans’ most important, and often only, source of retirement income, life insurance, and disability insurance.

She and her fellow Democrats understand that our nation is facing a looming retirement income crisis, where traditional pensions are disappearing and too many Americans fear they will never be able to retire with dignity and independence. They recognize that our Social Security system is the nation’s most efficient, universal, secure, and fair source of retirement income, as well as pre-retirement income in the event of disability or premature death, leaving dependent children.

That is why Clinton and her fellow Democrats are committed to fighting to expand Social Security. It is why Clinton and the Democratic Party oppose all cuts, which would only exacerbate the looming crisis. They understand that expanding Social Security is a solution.

In addition to expanding Social Security’s cash benefits, Clinton and her fellow Democrats are fighting to restore an invaluable Social Security benefit that has been weakened for most Americans and lost altogether for many. That is the benefit of security, peace of mind.

Americans should be confident and secure in the knowledge that, if tragedy should strike in the form of premature death, leaving dependent children, or in the form of a serious disabling illness or accident, which makes work impossible, their incomes will be replaced, thanks to the Social Security benefits they have earned. They should be secure in the knowledge that if they are fortunate to live to old age, Social Security will be there, providing guaranteed and timely benefits, month after month for the remainder of their lives.

Americans used to have confidence in the future of Social Security. In their recently released book Stronger Together, Clinton and her running mate, Tim Kaine, astutely identify the culprit that has stolen the invaluable benefit of security. Clinton and Kaine spotlight the “years of mythmaking claiming we cannot afford Social Security and that the only solution is to cut the benefits on which 90 percent of American seniors rely.”

Clinton and her fellow Democrats know what should be obvious to everyone: As the wealthiest nation in the world at the wealthiest moment in our history, the United States can not only afford our current Social Security system, but an expanded one. The debate over whether to expand or cut Social Security’s modest but vital benefits is a debate about values and what kind of nation we want to leave those who follow. The false claim that Social Security is unaffordable is, as Clinton and Kaine state, a destructive myth.

Rather than having an honest debate over values, however, Donald Trump’s Republican Party continues to spread the destructive myth of unaffordability. Trump and his fellow Republicans state in their 2016 Platform that Social Security’s “current course” [i.e., keeping our promises and paying the Social Security benefits that hard working Americans have earned and deserve] “will lead to a financial and social disaster.”

What thin reed are they relying on to spread this image of disaster? When pension plans, private or public, project far into the future, unanticipated surpluses or deficits sometimes appear. Indeed, Social Security is projecting a modest shortfall, around two decades away. How modest is the shortfall? Very. Social Security is close to fully funded for the next century and beyond! Precisely, according to the latest projections, Social Security is one hundred percent funded for the next ten years, 95 percent funded for the next 25 years, 87 percent funded for the next 50 years, and 84 percent funded for the next three-quarters of a century. These projections are unsurprising, unremarkable, and unalarming. Hardly a cause for panic! Not a reason for the frightening “disaster” language of the Republicans.

Hillary Clinton and her Democrats responsibly and wisely plan to pay for every penny of their proposed expansions while also restoring Social Security to long-range balance by requiring millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share for Social Security. About a dozen Social Security expansion bills in Congress doing just that – expanding Social Security while restoring the program to balance – have been carefully reviewed and analyzed by the actuaries at the Social Security Administration. The analyses are available for all to review on the Office of the Chief Actuary’s website, at ssa.gov/oact.

Clinton and the Democratic Party recognize that expanding Social Security while requiring the wealthiest to pay more is a solution to income and wealth inequality.
They are committed to reversing the perilous and immoral rise in income and wealth inequality, where millionaires and billionaires continue to see their vast fortunes grow to unimaginable heights while the vast majority of Americans have seen their income and wealth stagnate or, worse, decline. Expanding benefits and requiring millionaires and billionaires, who have gained so much from our Commonwealth (i.e. common wealth), to pay their fair share for Social Security is not too much to ask. It is an important step in reversing inequality and reducing the squeeze on working families, while putting retirement in closer reach.

So that is where Hillary and the Democratic Party stand: In support of expanding benefits, opposed to making our looming retirement income crisis worse by cutting benefits, and paying for every penny of benefits by requiring millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share.

What do Donald Trump and his Republican Party propose? In contrast to Hillary Clinton’s and the Democratic Party’s clear stand, Donald Trump’s Republican Party disingenuously pretends to take no stand. The 2016 Republican Platform meekly and unhelpfully, states, “Of the many reforms being proposed, all options should be on the table.” Keep reading, though, and it becomes clear that Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans do take a stand, just one that they want to hide.

The statement about being open to all options is contradicted by another, more honest, though opaque, statement: “As Republicans, we oppose tax increases and believe in the power of markets….” With coded language and process of elimination, Donald Trump’s Republican Party is stating that it desires to cut and privatize our Social Security system. They prefer to shield millionaires and billionaires from an additional penny of tax. Instead, they want to restore Social Security to balance by slashing the hard earned benefits of working Americans, instead. And why refer to the power of markets, except to implicitly express a desire to gamble Social Security’s guaranteed, secure benefits, exposing them to the ups and downs of Wall Street?

It is no wonder that Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans are trying to hide their true position. Cutting and privatizing Social Security are extreme, radical, irresponsible positions, totally out of step with the American people. Poll after poll show the American people overwhelmingly reject their position, and embrace the position of Clinton and her Democratic Party. A recent poll, completed September 16-18, 2016 of swing state voters, is typical of the results:

2016-09-23-1474658588-484924-poll.png

Instead of having the courage to clearly state their honest, though wildly unpopular, convictions, Donald Trump and his Republican colleagues seek to stoke fear. They eagerly and loudly trumpet the supposed “financial and social disaster” they claim Social Security will cause. In sharp contrast, they never talk about the financial and social disaster that already has been caused by Wall Street, a disaster from which so many Americans are still struggling to recover. Instead, Donald Trump and the Republicans seek to shield Wall Street from paying their fair share to Social Security. Indeed, they want to reward that very same Wall Street, allowing them to earn huge fees as they gamble American Workers’ hard earned Social Security.

Voters should not be fooled by candidates who speak of “saving” Social Security. Nor should they be fooled by Donald Trump’s assertions, which he made during the primaries, that he would not cut Social Security. As just discussed, his Party’s Platform reveals the truth. Trump’s own running mate and his closest campaign advisers all are on record for wanting to cut and privatize Social Security. Behind closed doors,

Revealingly, before Donald Trump started running for President, he was not so concerned about hiding his desire to cut and privatize Social Security. Then, he used a false, derogatory slur, “Ponzi scheme,” to refer to our Social Security system and its earned benefits. He said that “privatization would be good for all of us.” And he called for raising the retirement age to age 70 because, as he remarked, not worrying about hiding from view the elite billionaire that he is, “how many times will you really want to take that trailer to the Grand Canyon?”

Hillary Clinton, and the Democratic Party which created Social Security, will fight to expand benefits while requiring millionaires and billionaires to pay more. Donald Trump and the Republican Party will probably not tell you, but they appear eager to drastically cut, and indeed, dismantle our Social Security system, brick by brick, by handing it over to their Wall Street friends.

Seniors and others who care about Social Security should be keenly aware of this sharp difference when they go to vote on November 8. Their and their family’s economic security will likely rest on the outcome.

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

Creating Meaning From Madness

2016-09-22-1474579514-773511-imgres.jpgIt seems timely, somehow, that I update and reprint an article that I wrote in the aftermath of 9/11, not so much because it was recently the 15th anniversary of the tragedy, but because this kind of display of heartlessness seems to be with us like an undertow. Seaside Park, New Jersey and Chelsea, New York City are only the most recent occurrences. The following is my way of putting this state of affairs in a kind of perspective.

Infertility in a Time of Tragedy – (original title, text updated September, 2016)

I’ve been an infertility counselor for 38 years, a mother for 47 and a grandmother for 13. My heart has been in all three of these aspects of myself. The joy of being a mother, grandmother and guide for those who seek parenthood are absolutely integral to my being and are noisily alive within me. I feel privileged to have experienced these things. When a patient conceives, gives birth or adopts, my off-key self feels as if I could sing. It comes just as easily, naturally and authentically for me to share in the joy of a patient’s hard-won victories as it had been to experience my own good fortune.

Humanity has been devastated by the few, on whom the miracle of conception and birth – the wonder of experiencing nature at its most profound – has been obliterated, or they could never have committed such heinous crimes.

Words do little justice in explaining the horror of what was felt then and continues to be felt. It would be a shame to fail to remember the past or fail to respond to present horror by becoming hardened to it. As our leaders have said, we win by metabolizing our grief and moving on from each ground zero.

Fifteen years ago, I watched myself struggle to stay balanced: present one minute, disappearing the next, coming back to myself and functioning well one minute, not knowing left from right the next. One of my patients summed up the normalcy of these kinds of reactions when she said, “It wasn’t until after I was out of the shower that I realized that I hadn’t rinsed off the soap.”

At times, back then, I needed to weep and wasn’t able to find the release valve. And so, I was relieved when a friend took me into her confidence and told me that she was pregnant. I burst out crying, not only with relief but also a kind of joy that surprised me. The thought that almost 3,000 people had been vaporized, but we were going to get new life seemed like the most important thing in the world. Unspeakable evil can’t hold a candle to the miracle of life.

Soon after that I spent some time with a new mother. She was profoundly and poignantly grateful to have her five week old daughter, even more so since the tragedy. She said she thanks God for the chance to be reminded, because of how much care a newborn needs, of what is truly beautiful in this world. Loving a baby is one antidote to evil.

Infertility is a personal tragedy. Those in the challenge want nothing more than to have their longing for new life – their next generation – resolved so they can give and receive love, our greatest gift.

Donald Trump Presidency Would Mean The ‘Decimation Of Public Education,’ Says Top Teachers Union Leader

WASHINGTON ― Randi Weingarten has been an outspoken surrogate for Hillary Clinton. She spoke at the Democratic National Convention in August, and her American Federation of Teachers was the first national labor union to make a presidential endorsement in the 2016 cycle.

The reason she’s so worried about Donald Trump, she told a small gathering of reporters Wednesday, goes far beyond what he would do to schools in this country. Think launching a war based on a bruised ego and fundamentally changing what it means to be president of the United States.

“The guy’s narcissism makes him so dangerous,” Weingarten said. “You have no idea sitting here whether he would get us into a war simply because he’s mad at someone. There’s not someone who’s been elected as president who is as mercurial, who is as dangerous, as what this guy says any day of the week.”

Weingarten has already heard from teachers around the country who are worried about what effect Trump’s rhetoric is having on students. A teacher in Dearborn, Michigan, for example, told her she had a student come up and ask whether she and her family will be deported.

In March, The Washington Post reported that third-grade students in Fairfax County, Virginia, told a child with darker skin that he would have to leave if Trump becomes president. And at a high school basketball game in Indiana, students from a predominantly white school chanted “Build the wall!” ― a Trump refrain ― when playing a predominantly Latino school.

“If the guy running for president mocks a disabled reporter the way he did, what do you do if you are a schoolteacher now after that? … When we try in schools to stop bullying, to increase tolerance, to celebrate diversity, how do you have the president of the United States doing exactly the opposite? How do you create an environment that respects each other, that teaches people if that happens?” she asked.

Weingarten said AFT is considering having town hall meetings allowing teachers to step forward and testify about this “Trump effect” and what is happening in schools.

The labor leader has also spoken out about Trump’s $ 20 billion voucher proposal, which would use federal funds to create state-run block grants allowing students to enroll in private and charter schools. Weingarten said it would take away federal funds for low-income students, students with disabilities and other public school resources, as well as Pell Grants used to attend college.

“It’s the decimation of public education,” she said, “and no one should pretend it’s anything other than that.”

The Trump campaign did not return a request for comment.

Weingarten has already been talked about as a possible education secretary in a Clinton administration, but she said she wasn’t focused on that prospect and said it was “ridiculous” to speculate about it right now.

“My focus right now is on doing everything in our power to save our country and save civilization,” she said, “which means to get Hillary Clinton elected.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly serial liar, birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

How Discipline Creates Confidence

In 1974 a French man by the name of Philippe Petit walked on a wire across the Twi Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. While most people would have felt ill just looking off the top of the towers, he was able to walk on the wire with confidence and grace.

To some degree, this was because of his dare-devil nature. He was a rock climber, bullfighter, and loved slacklining (all of which can be dangerous pursuits). For the most part, Petit was confident in his walk across the wire because of his discipline. By pursuing his passion with vigor from a young age, he was able to better understand both the process and his own capabilities when it came to wire walking.

On that fateful day when people saw Petit confidently walking across the wire at the Twin Towers, they really were seeing a lifetime of practice manifesting in a single moment.

Turning Discipline into Confidence

At times we all face internal doubt and negative beliefs. Our biggest challenge is to face these problems head on rather than listen to the doubt as it talks us out of our biggest dreams. There are a few things to keep in mind when you are turning discipline into confidence.

1. Negative talk isn’t bad – just because you have negative self-talk doesn’t mean you have to consider it a bad thing. Instead, you can use this kind of self-talk in order to get an advantage. The self doubt is what keeps you awake at night. It is what makes you question whether you have done something in the right way. All of this doubt and anxiety might seem harmful, but you can utilize it to take action.

Using the self doubt to create disciplines will set you up for success. You may wake up early in the morning in order to do your best work or you may avoid alcohol so that your brain is always sharp. One motorcycle accident lawyer named Chris Stoy recounts “when I stopped drinking so often and started preparing for my legal work, we started winning large $ 10 million cases.” That’s where some negative self talk became a real asset.

2. Trust discipline, not motivation – even though motivation often feels good, it isn’t useful for the purpose of solving your most important problems. Whether it is a professional or personal challenge, discipline is going to be your savior, not motivation. The feeling of motivation is often fleeting and discipline is far more reliable.

Famed Navy Seal Jocko Willink is known for his discourses on discipline and motivation, which might ring true for you. “Discipline equals freedom.”

3. Prepare for failure – if you utilize discipline to prepare yourself as well as you possibly can, then you will have complete confidence with humility in your task. This is the best combination as you will be humble enough to take a closer look at where you could make mistakes. You will realize you aren’t infallible.

At the same time, you will have prepared enough that it will be nearly inconceivable for you to have a problem you haven’t already thought of. In preparing for failure with your disciplines, you can gain a whole new sense of confidence in both yourself and whatever project you are working on.

Mantras For The Fall Season

Well, it’s official. Today marks the first day of fall.

For some of us, fall is our favorite season. It brings the promise of things to look forward to like apple picking, Halloween, and pumpkin spice lattes.

For some of us though, transitioning out of the summer and into the fall can be difficult. Fall means the holidays are right around the corner and it also means it’s time to get some of the things we’ve been delaying done before the year is over.

We feel the clock counting down and panic ensues. We yearn for balance, calm and certainty and pray that the end of this year will be the smoothest we’ve experienced yet.

We hope this will be the year we get our to-do list done ahead of time, the one where we do not stress over the holiday season and the one where we enter a new year with grace and ease.

We vow to create balance, to continue working on our goals and not get off track. We hope for the time to do it all while still doing what most fills our souls.

But the thing is our day to day lives don’t always allow us the time for balance and pursuing our passions.

After all, there are responsibilities to tend to, hayrides to be had, jack-o-lanterns to be made, turkeys to be carved, shopping to be done, gifts to wrap, cookies to bake, and so naturally we sometimes feel like we have no time to focus on all the other things we’d like to be doing too.

I’ve already noticed myself struggling with that balance, and the season is only just beginning!

In an effort to shift that energy, these past couple of weeks I have been practicing mantras to help me focus on the things that matter most–the things that fulfill my spirit, help me maintain a healthy mindset and help me work towards my goals and dreams.

Because I know the more I can maintain that happiness within me, the more productive and happy I will be all around.

I thought I would share these affirmations in the hopes they might inspire you if you find yourself struggling to focus on keeping your dreams and goals at the forefront.

1. On making time: “I make time for the things that matter most to me.”

2. On creating balance: “I easily balance my priorities, my responsibilities and my dreams.”

3. On giving ourselves what we need: “I create the space I need to fulfill my dreams.”

4. On paying attention to things that keep us off track: “I easily shut out what distracts me.”

5. On keeping our dreams front and center: “I focus on my dreams and my dreams are my focus.”

Being focused on what will bring us the ultimate wellness and happiness can be a day to day challenge, but it’s a challenge that is well worth facing head on because none of us want to start a new year feeling we have lost of our center or our joy in the midst of the holiday mayhem.

The more we recognize when it’s time to reset our focus, the more we won’t feel so frazzled or like we are zooming through the days like a superhero. When we listen to what we need to maintain balance, and follow through on that calling, we won’t burnout–at least not as easily.

Once we reclaim our focus, bit by bit and day by day, things become a little easier to manage. When we keep reminding ourselves of our ultimate goal–how we want to feel and what we want to be doing–it’s easier to honor the time we need to rest and recharge.

The truth is, when we feel energized and happy, we are more easily able to enjoy the hectic times that come during this time of year. And when we are happier, the people around us are happier too.

Because it all comes down to this one simple truth:

When we strive to make time for our joy, we will enjoy our lives more.

Trump and Donald Jr: Like Father, Like Son

Hillary Clinton recently stated, “To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables.”

Donald Trump responded, “She divides people into baskets as though they were objects, not human beings.”

Hmmm. Very interesting. Then Monday Donald Trump Jr. posted this asinine Tweet:

2016-09-21-1474484143-1242079-TrumpJr.jpg

Apparently the Junior Donald prefers the sweet taste of that silver spoon in his mouth to the flavor of Skittles.

The Trump camp did not chastise him for dividing people into bowls “as though they were objects, not human beings.”

In fact, yesterday Trump’s Senior Communications Adviser Jason Miller called Donald Trump Jr. a “tremendous asset.” Personally, I think Miller went too far–exactly two letters too far.

With Donald and Donald Jr., it seems that the rotten apple doesn’t fall far from the rotten tree.

Learn Mindfulness: Practice 6 — Mindfulness Of Sounds

2016-09-07-1473253789-9852272-TCPBookCover.png

Let go of your mind and then be mindful. Close your ears and listen!
Rumi

INVITATION:

In my morning meditation I am sometimes joined by Ty (a large labrador) who tries all his tricks to get my attention.

I close my eyes, he nuzzles my ears. I centre myself, he licks my face. I focus on my breath, he rams a toy in my hand. I ignore him, he sits squarely on my lap.

Now sometimes I acquiesce and we play together on the floor. In those moments I try to be fully present with him and the game becomes something of a meditation itself.

Other times, he gives up his nuzzling and sits quietly at my side. We then both journey inward, he to sleep, and me into meditation.

Ty has taught me that an authentic mindfulness practice cannot be overly rigid and must include space for the spontaneous and the unexpected.

MINDFUL TIP:

In this practice, listen to the sounds around you and pay vivid attention, as if you were hearing birdsong for the very first time.

PRACTICE:

Begin by finding a comfortable posture and by bringing your attention to the breath. Take a few moments to let yourself arrive and allow the breath to draw you gently into internal awareness. Allow the gaze to soften, the eyes to close.

1) Wait.

2) Listen.

3) What can you hear?

4) Silently name three specific sounds: e.g.

The hum of electrical equipment

The sounds of traffic

Distant birdsong

5) Now bring your focus to a single sound. Pay full attention to it. Describe it silently to yourself using five single words. If listening to the ocean your words might be:

Wave, Crash, Smooth, Wash, Sweep.

6) Take five breaths here and fully explore the sound.

7) If the mind wanders, gently bring it back to the sound by finding something new about it. Take five further breaths here as you listen closely.

8) Next, repeat instructions 5-7 for your second and third sounds.

9) Return to wakefulness in your own way.

Record your experience and your chosen sounds and words in your Mindfulness Journal.

If practising with others, take turns sharing your discoveries.

This practice is an extract from 100 Mindfulness Meditations: The Ultimate Collection of Inspiring Daily Practices by Neil Seligman published by Conscious House and available on Amazon priced £12.99.

10 Mindfulness Meditations is an album of audio meditations to accompany the book and is now available on iTunes priced £7.99

Burn Your Homesickness Away With These State-Specific Candles

Sometimes life asks us to live far from our hometown. And when you pick up and move across the country or world, it’s normal to feel that pang for home.

But now there’s a cure for feeling homesick. Homesick Candles is a line of 100 percent soy wax candles, infused with a blend of scents unique to each state. Each candle is made with real ingredients, like sage, honeysuckle and carnation.

Folks from Nashville can burn a candle with hints of magnolia and Tennessee single malt whiskey. Detroit transplants can experience the Great Lakes State with cherries, chocolate and the rich scents of Indian summers.

The candles, which are currently on sale for $ 29.95 each, are expected to burn anywhere from 60–80 hours. Thirty states are available now, and you can sign up for a notification alert once your state’s candle is developed.

Why buy? Research shows that smell is one of the most powerful senses. Odor-evoked biographical memory occurs when a certain smell is processed by your brain. Suddenly, you’re brought right back to a specific time and place, memory or emotion.

So go ahead – light a match and inhale deeply! Home is where the scent is, anyway.

Celebrating Culinary Culture: Food Rituals in Contemporary American Short Story Writing

Celebrating Culinary Culture: Food Rituals in Contemporary American Short Story Writing

Essay from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies – Comparative Literature, grade: B, , language: English, abstract: The short stories in Brooklyn author Jhumpa Lahiri’s anthology Interpreter of Maladies all share a plotline revolving around immigration, conforming to a typical theme in the contemporary American short story. In this context, food is used as a means to express the crossing of boundaries, whether they are political, religious or psychological. Rituals, beliefs, customs and morals attached to the preparation, consumption and celebration of meals by characters in the stories depict the negotiation of a hyphenated identity as it pertains to gender, sexuality, family, friendship, war and love. Lahiri’s stories tell the reader about the Indian – American experience in particular, but her narratives transcend national concerns, because the food archetype is universal. In her fictional accounts, Lahiri works out her characters’ efforts to maintain their Indian tradition while struggling to assimilate to the United States and the ambivalence that is involved in the process. This is achieved by a literal feed into socio-cultural gaps creating a great deal of irony and humor. Lahiri appeals to the reader’s senses through the detailed description of taste, smell, visual or texture of food and the atmosphere surrounding it. A vivid idea of a component of the characters’ heritage is evoked as a result in the reader, so he / she develops a concrete awareness for certain culturally based idiosyncracies and differences likely to clash with American mores.

The Politics Of Responsibility

One glaring blind spot liberals have is the issue of personal responsibility. And it features prominently in this election. We tend to blame society, culture and other abstractions for a range of problems, from the gun violence in our inner cities to inequality. Usually Republicans win on this issue because they keep it simple. They castigate liberal apprehensions about racial and ethnic stereotypes when they invoke the need for people to be held accountable for their actions.

This presidential election, the nation faces a vastly unprepared candidate in Republican Donald Trump who also happens to be the least responsible candidate of our time. Trump emphasized this last week when he shifted the blame for his birtherism to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, which multiple news outlets recognized was a bald-faced lie.

Trump refuses responsibility for his morass of false statements and likely won’t follow through on many of the promises he is making on the campaign trail, such as building a wall on our southern border and forcing Mexico to pay for it. How would he fare as a president? The last president with such a distaste for the truth lied us into war. There are signs that Trump would do worse, from his seriously asking advisers why we can’t use nuclear weapons to his pandering to an often racist and unhinged base.

With Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, we hear that she is simply not trustworthy enough to hold the position. Her critics on the left decry her lack of progressive bona fides and are actually considering a protest vote for a third-party candidate. They would derail the American experiment in democracy because Clinton doesn’t speak to them. How have we gotten to this point?

I’d argue a lot of it has to do with the way we on the left think of responsibility. Because we lead with our hearts so much, we are too quick to blame amorphous eminences like “society” for individual failing. And we don’t take the responsibility of voting seriously enough. A vote for anyone but Clinton would be a disaster.

Trump can actually sound like the more responsible candidate to some because the right has often taken up issues such as individualism and a disdain for cultural explanations for personal problems. Because he wraps himself in such language, to many who don’t scrutinize his words he seems more presidential.

But Clinton, a seasoned politician who also cares about issues affecting the powerless in society, will prove to be much more responsible than Trump. Clinton is the perfect embodiment of a practical politician. She hasn’t always said the right things over her long career but she is willing to listen to others and compromise for the good of the country. She realizes that you have to have actual policy positions, not just one-liners and zingers, and you have to do your homework to be able to lead a nation of more than 300 million people.

Nick Kristof has written that society is responsible for the choices you have and you are responsible for the choices you make. I know that when pushed to the brink, even the most responsible people can make bad decisions. Without help from others, we can fail to realize what is the best path forward. But make no mistake, each person has a choice in how he or she will act. I had a professor who once asked my class if we really thought that people in poverty didn’t have at least some say in the lives they led. We found ourselves unable to disagree. In a democracy, each person’s choice of actions affects others greatly, and not just on election day. We liberals need to embrace responsibility again because always demurring on the issue is only helping Trump and his followers.

Mercury Retrograde Ends On Sept 22nd — 5 Ways To Make People Very Happy!

2016-09-20-1474385592-5607165-Borat.jpg
It’s time to strike up the band and break out the champagne because on September 22nd Mercury retrograde is officially over. Say hallelujah! The planet Mercury goes “direct,” and your life officially returns back to normal. You can start humming the lyrics from Bobby McFerrin’s song, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”

Just like Paul Revere, the famous American patriot, who on his midnight ride, warned everyone, “The British are coming!”–I warned you “Mercury retrograde was coming from August 30 to September 22.” In my recent Mercury retrograde article I explained that this cosmic event was taking place over the past three weeks. During the retrograde period, the world went haywire, weird things happened, and your life was probably filled with communication problems you don’t usually encounter.

In the cosmos, the planet Mercury rules all types of communications. This Mercury retrograde brought out more then its share of crazy news stories that typified the communication problems both people and politicians experienced. Here are a few examples of people who did not do well under the influence of this retrograde.

Mercury Retrograde News Stories

Rio de Janeiro, Aug. 30 (USA TODAY Sports) Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte has been pilloried for his exaggerated tale of robbery in Rio.

Mexico City, Sept. 1 Mexican President and Donald Trump have Twitter War over “Mexico not paying for the wall.”

New York, Sept 6 (Huffington Post) Matt Lauer Lets Donald Trump Get Away With Iraq War Lie.

Yahoo News, Sept. 7 Pilot accidentally flies to the entirely wrong country in colossal stuff-up.

New York, Sept 9 (NY Daily News) Hillary Clinton says that 50% of Trump’s supporters are “deplorable.”

Regardless of the problems you encountered during this retrograde, if you do some simple things when Mercury goes direct, you’ll derive huge benefit and make yourself (or someone else) very happy.

Five Ways to Make People Very Happy!

1. You made your mother happy when you listened to her advice. Aren’t you glad you declined that job as Head Organizer for “Latinos & Muslims for Trump!” Now you can accept a job opportunity with a real future.

During the retrograde, you may have had some confusion about whether to accept a promotional opportunity or a new job offer. However, when Mercury goes direct those doubts will be gone. The fog lifts and your vision is 20/20. You’re now able to evaluate the good, bad and the ugly of any employment opportunity and chose the one that’s right for you. It’s also a positive time to begin a new position because you’ll be communicating clearly without the confusion that causes misunderstandings or bad first impressions.

2. Be grateful you weren’t fired after placing either of these two crazy ideas in the company suggestion box: the one for “Flavored bullets so people can commit suicide with one of five tasty choices.” Or your new event idea for the annual company picnic: “Having a Xanax scavenger hunt where everything on the list must be stolen.”

Admit to co-workers that your recent ideas were pretty dumb. Let them know that you understand why they burned your picture in effigy in the company lunchroom as a throng of employees loudly cheered, clapped, and chanted, “What a doofus.”

3. Immediately schedule an appointment to see your hair stylist. . .Please! During the retrograde, you changed your hairdo. What a mistake! It’s clear now that the Donald Trump “comb-over” look wasn’t right for you. Now that Mercury is direct, it’s time to have your hair stylist do a make over and undo the damage, and stop the ridicule you’ve endured from your family and friends. It’s time to “make this face great again.”

Before the retrograde began, you may have been evaluating areas of your life where you needed to make decisions. Perhaps, it was inconvenient to delay making those decisions, waiting for the three weeks of the retrograde to pass. (That’s why you decided to change your hairstyle during the retrograde. Bad move!) But as the direct period begins, you’ll discover mistakes you might have made and learn some useful information you didn’t know. With these facts in hand, you’ll be ready to make the right buying decision to purchase that expensive car or home, begin a new project with greater confidence of success, more competently select a new attorney for estate planning or a plastic surgeon for your cosmetic surgery.

4. Return your girlfriend’s talking-parrot, Freddy (who you swore flew out the window during the week you were house-sitting for her). Now is an excellent time to find items you’ve lost (even a parrot, who screams, “Loser” each time he sees you.)

The direct period is a time to find those things that were lost (or, that you had a hand in losing). Keep in mind, that we all lose things of value, even when Mercury is not retrograde. However, during the retrograde, when people are especially careless and mistake-prone, there is a higher propensity to lose important items such as money, clothes, rings or other valuables (or, even a parrot). The direct period is a very fortunate time to find, not only items that you’ve lost during the retrograde, but valuables you’ve lost over the years.

Make a list of any items you’ve lost recently, or even months, or years ago. Think back to when and where you lost them. Mentally, your mind is especially sharp now, allowing you to recall details you had long forgotten. You’ll think of a new place you’ve never looked before and magically, your lost item will be there. Or, you may suddenly remember someone you should contact who could help you recover what you’ve lost.

5. Apologize for what you said about your mother-in-law. Let your wife know that you mis-spoke when you referred to her as, “That nosy b*tch!”

Resolve misunderstandings that have occurred. We all make mistakes in the way we communicate with others. Unfortunately, we tend to make a lot of them during the retrograde period. But what separates the men from the boys and the girls from the women are the way we clean them up, when we make them. If you’ve had an argument at work with a colleague or boss, or had a big fight with a loved one, or called a loved one’s mother a harsh name, Mercury direct is the ideal time to discuss what’s upset you, apologize or forgive someone. You’ll have the mental clarity to express yourself appropriately and reach a new understanding that will resolve your upset and create a more harmonious relationship.

Mercury retrograde is a time to slow down, reflect and re-evaluate all your plans and projects. Re-consider your ideas and what you’ve learned. If you’ve consciously done this–you’re now more conscious of changes you can make to improve it. To help you with this task, make a list of people you’ve had questions about, projects you considered undertaking, and activities you were contemplating. Ask yourself: what have you learned about them that you didn’t know three weeks ago? This new knowledge will help you make needed changes and more successful decisions.

Take advantage of this period of sanity when the world is no longer quite as crazy, that is, until December 19, 2016 when the next Mercury retrograde begins. Until then, get busy; you have things to do to make some people very happy.

Hmm, There May Be A Link Between Vaccines And Political Pandering

You’d think that between the two major-party candidates for president, plus the two third-party candidates drawing significant support in the polls, there would be at least one person with an unblemished record of support for mandatory public vaccination ― one of the greatest public health achievements in history ― against the bogus idea that vaccines cause autism.

You’d be wrong. While Republican nominee Donald Trump is the only proponent of the autism theory among those four, each of the other candidates has flirted with it at one point or another. The Huffington Post has rated their vaccine views on a booster shot scale:

We award Donald Trump zero out of five possible Booster Shots.

The Republican nominee is a full-blown proponent of the notion that vaccines cause autism, a theory that researchers have studied and rejected over and over after a medical journal helped launch the notion with a 1998 article since retracted.

“Autism has become an epidemic,” Trump said during a Republican primary debate last fall, referring to the rise in the incidence of autism in recent decades. He then relayed the story of an unidentified employee whose child, he said, “went to have the vaccine and came back and a week later got a tremendous fever, got very, very sick, now is autistic.”

Trump said that he is “totally in favor” of vaccines but that he wants “smaller doses over a longer period of time.”

Delaying vaccine doses for small children is not a safe choice, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has explained on its website: “Some vaccine-preventable diseases remain common in the United States, and children may be exposed to these diseases during the time they are not protected by vaccines, placing them at risk for a serious case of the disease that might cause hospitalization or death.”

Most of the measles cases in the U.S. since 2000, when the disease was officially found to have been eliminated from this country, have been among people who weren’t vaccinated, according to the CDC.

In 2011, then-Rep. Michele Bachmann tanked in the Republican presidential primary after suggesting an unfounded link between the HPV vaccine and mental retardation. For some reason, pushing risky views about vaccines hasn’t had the same effect on Trump’s candidacy.

Jill Stein gets two Booster Shots.

Stein recently said that she is “not aware” of evidence linking vaccines to autism and that it’s false to call her anti-vax. The Green Party nominee made those comments after people criticized her for suggesting there may be vaccine dangers in a July interview with The Washington Post.

“As a medical doctor, there was a time where I looked very closely at those issues, and not all those issues were completely resolved,” Stein told the Post. “There were concerns among physicians about what the vaccination schedule meant, the toxic substances like mercury which used to be rampant in vaccines. There were real questions that needed to be addressed. I think some of them at least have been addressed. I don’t know if all of them have been addressed.”

Stein’s campaign argued that she wasn’t pandering to anti-vaxxers in that interview and that she was just trying to say Americans have legitimate concerns “that the pharmaceutical industry exerts undue influence in our regulatory institutions.”

Several public health experts said Stein’s remarks still amounted to throwing shade on vaccination. “My definition of anti-vaccine is that you put out information about vaccines that’s misleading, that you put out bad information,” Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center in Philadelphia, told Salon. “She’s done that.”

Gary Johnson gets three Booster Shots.

He tweeted in 2011 “no to mandatory vaccines,” but the Libertarian Party nominee came around this August in an interview with NPR.

“You know, since I’ve said that … I’ve come to find out that without mandatory vaccines, the vaccines that would in fact be issued would not be effective,” he said. “So … it’s dependent that you have mandatory vaccines so that every child is immune. Otherwise, not all children will be immune even though they receive a vaccine.”

Hillary Clinton gets four Booster Shots.

In 2015, Clinton made a forceful statement in favor of mandatory vaccination, saying on Twitter “the science is clear” that vaccines are good. She sent the tweet in the aftermath of a measles outbreak that had prompted less reassuring statements from other politicians.

The Democratic nominee’s only demerit is a statement on a 2008 questionnaire that expressed uncertainty about the autism claim, contrary to the medical establishment.

“We don’t know what, if any, kind of link there is between vaccines and autism ― but we should find out,” Clinton wrote. Then-Sen. Barack Obama also said more research needed to be done.

Crime Will Likely Stay At Near-Historic Lows In 2016, Despite What Donald Trump Says

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump claims that crime is out of control.” As with most of what Trump says, the evidence isn’t really there.

A preliminary analysis released Monday by New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice projects that crime rates will remain near an all-time low in 2016. The rates are expected to hover around last year’s numbers, increasing only slightly by 1.3 percent.

“These findings undercut media reports referring to crime as ‘out of control,’ or heralding a new nationwide crime wave,” the report says.

Trump, who bills himself as the “law and order candidate,” has sought since the beginning of his campaign to depict the U.S. as a violent, lawless country, teeming with murderers and Mexican rapists. The idea is to paint America as such a wretched place that voters will have no choice but to turn to Trump, with his promises of “I alone can fix it.”

The BCJ report comes just days after an analysis by The New York Times showing that murder rates increased in 25 of the nation’s 100 largest cities last year. Both the Brennan Center and the Times analysis note that there’s a lot of nuance to crime statistics ― especially homicide rates. Even if there have been localized increases of the kind seen in the Times report, it doesn’t necessarily mean crime is surging nationwide.

Trump, however, isn’t famous for his sensitivity to nuance. He repeatedly pushes “tough-on-crime” policies even though most Americans don’t support the methods.

Being harsher on crime can cause complaints of police harassment to rise. Poor and black people are disproportionately arrested and tend to serve extended sentences for minor offenses. And in any case, locking more people up does not cause crime rates to drop.

But there’s an audience for Trump’s claims, however misleading they might be. Sixty-one percent of Americans believe crime has increased nationwide in the past decade, according to an August poll conducted by The Huffington Post and YouGov. It hasn’t.

Much of the belief that crime is surging can probably be attributed to the ubiquity of mass media and social media in our lives ― something that wasn’t as much the case a decade ago. Individual crimes tend to receive massive amounts of attention on these platforms, which can have the effect of making America seem like a more dangerous and violent place than it really is.

There’s also the idea of a so-called “Ferguson effect” ― the theory that crime is up in some places because cops are hesitant to do their jobs now that police brutality has come under national scrutiny.

There’s not much reason to believe the “Ferguson effect” is real. And the Brennan Center found no uniform trend toward increases in crime. In fact, its researchers expect that some cities where crime rose last year will become safer in 2016.

Baltimore and Washington, two cities where a jump in homicides caused the national murder rate to rise in 2015, are projected to see murder rates decrease by 9.9 percent and 10.9 percent, respectively.

Some cities, like San Diego, will see an increased murder rate while overall crime drops, the BCJ predicts. Others, like Charlotte, North Carolina, will see an increase in overall crime while murder rates remain stable.

And like last year, some cities will most likely experience elevated rates of violent crime that will, in turn, bring the national rate up. Los Angeles and Chicago are expected to account for half of the 5.5 percent nationwide increase in violent crime. Chicago is projected to make up half of the 13.1 percent murder rate increase.

This, however, is not evidence of a national crime wave, since there may be certain factors causing crime to surge in these cities ― such as poverty, unemployment and segregated neighborhoods.

“Warnings of a coming crime wave may be provocative,” the report says, “but they are not supported by the evidence.”

Series: Reaching Your Goals

By Hunter Glenn

______________________________________________________________________

Once, alchemists sought the secret formula for turning lead into gold. Nowadays, we seek things that are rather more unattainable. The perfect job. The perfect relationship. The perfect family life. Perfect health. Perfect everything!

Our Automatic Approach

Sam, for instance, tries to get the perfect body. His diet is whatever TV says is the latest “right way.” He exercises however his Facebook feed says is “the best way it’s done” (which is it again: cardio or strength?).

However, it’s hard to keep good habits; mostly Sam just tries until he fails (which is often).

When Sam was a student, he studied the one way he knew how. He picked his major, his profession, his job based on advice from his parents, with just a few moments reflecting on his own desires or how to do the most good with his career. Medical treatment? He gets whatever he hears is best according to hearsay and best friends.

You probably don’t need me to tell you how that’s working for Sam. Sometimes things go well, sometimes they don’t, more or less at random. Things just…happen to Sam; he rarely feels in control.

Sam lives his life on autopilot. And he sometimes wonders if this is really the best he can do.

For that, I admire Sam. He has a sense that there’s a better way, that he himself can do better. He’s self-aware, seeing that his “any ole’ way” strategy isn’t working for him. Realizing that if you’re lacking results, you must be lacking…something important… is the first great key.

A golden life needs a silver bullet. Without it, for all his admirable drive to improve his life, all his energy, I fear Sam will just move from one not-very-impressive strategy to another. Life often fails to reward our effort, if that effort is not properly directed.

What approach can make us powerful, succeeding in every area of life? You might have heard it before:
Seek the truth all the days of your life
And “the truth will set you free.”

The Rational Approach

Unlike Sam, Sally seeks the truth. She looks on a mess of a thousand lies and plucks the one nugget of truth out of it. She grows more powerful as the years pass; the diamonds in the rough inevitably end up in her hands; others may be satisfied by fool’s gold, but her kind want the genuine article, and they get it.

Results. Sally’s work is rewarded with results. She sifts through diet advice and finds what really works. Changing habits isn’t easy for anybody, but Sally figured out how to make that work for her, too. Her exercise plan works. She has a feeling of control in her life. She knows exactly why she chose what to study and the work she wants to do. The truth has served her well.

The star’s natural state is to shine surrounded by darkness on every side. Truth’s natural state is to shine amid frustrated, useless lies on every side. The truth-seeker’s natural state is to succeed on every side, while others ask “What’s your secret?” Sally’s secret is not assuming that she holds the truth, but to keep checking whether what she believes is true, and how well her beliefs enable her to accomplish her goals.

It’s so tempting to believe that we have the truth, isn’t it? Who would admit otherwise? Indeed, anyone you ask will be willing to tell you the way to success.

Fake Answers

If we want to get to New York, which is worse, having no map, or following a map to Congo? The answer is even more obvious when maps to New York are right there for the taking, but we’re not taking them because we “already have our map.”

2016-09-02-1472782045-662474-pic2.jpg
Caption: “New York City, just like I pictured it!” (image credit)

This is why seeking the truth is only a first step. What if we just fall for the most convincing fake “truth” on the market?

Nate Silver, enjoying incredible success in his work of predicting the future, wrote a book called The Signal and the Noise¸ all about how to find the true “signal” (the truth) when it’s cut up in a thousand pieces and hidden, scattered in “The Noise” (fake answers). This is our second great key, finding the answer. Not just finding an answer, finding the answer, the truth.

These are the two great trials in life, the two gates on the road to success. First, asking the question, and second, finding the (right) answer. Finding our ignorance, then finding its cure. Starting a quest for truth, then resisting the siren call of fake answers.

Rationality is Results

What will happen when Sam learns to find the signal, the lighthouse in the distance, the guiding star, instead of going from one noise to the next?

He will succeed. He will move from one area of his life to the next, finding the useful tricks out of the useless, each adding to his chest of knowledge like precious gemstones. One area of his life after another will shine like the sun, as Sam himself begins to, one struggle after another defeated and trophied, a victory to be rightly proud of.

This is called rationality, of the real kind. Rationality is about results. And results come from finding the one path that leads upwards out of a thousand confused paths going nowhere.

Why rationality? Why not just be satisfied with what we’ve got, never looking for a better way to study, to work, to make decisions, to parent, or date, or get in shape, or get our life in shape? Why not be be satisfied with whatever answer we picked up along the way, and be satisfied with the results our efforts give us?

Then again, why shouldn’t you succeed? Don’t you want to stride through life, growing stronger by the day? Why shouldn’t you go from one area of life to the next, becoming healthier, happier, more capable, more successful, more anything you want?

There is a way. But there is also a cost.

2016-09-02-1472785714-6878237-pic3.jpg
Caption: Person holding flashlight shining at the stars (image credit)

The Cost

Can you lift your head up and search the stars? Can you admit that you have to look if you’re going to succeed?

Even if you pass this test, there is a second. Can you admit that if you didn’t spy the right answer the first time, you might not spy it the second? That you need to learn how to judge truth from error? Can you accept it if the truth isn’t what you thought it was, what you hoped it was?

If so…Then I repeat, there are answers.

Conclusion

Remember, the first great trial is realizing you have to look for answers. The obvious thing is to look for answers where you have none. But far more subtle (and difficult) is the need to look for answers where you already have some, but need to ask, “Am I letting a made-up map keep me from looking for a genuine one?”

I highly recommend How To Actually Change Your Mind to escape the chains of false knowledge.

And the second great trial is to become discerning, to get the right answer. To see a palace of glass and find the diamonds hidden in plain sight. To view the waving, warping kaleidoscope of fanciful ideas and see through their distraction to the truth. The signal amid the noise. Nate Silver’s The Signal and the Noise and other books like it are here.

Seek truth all the days of your life, and the truth will give you power to set yourself free. Be rational. Those who seek the stars for a lifetime, one day become stars themselves.

Questions for Consideration:

  • Why don’t we always feel in control of our lives?
  • What happened the last times you tried to improve your life?
  • Why do people say “knowledge is power?”
  • Why do we sometimes feel certain about things, only to later find out we were mistaken?

Tearjerking Video Shows Kids With Cancer Ringing ‘End-Of-Treatment’ Bell

Kids with cancer can spend weeks, months and even years undergoing chemotherapy. That’s why finishing chemo treatment is so amazing.

At the Aflac Cancer Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), there’s a special tradition to celebrate this milestone. Patients ring the “end-of-treatment bell” to signal that they’ve completed their chemo treatments. As the above video shows, this moment can be incredibly emotional.

“For kids enduring treatment, chemo means things like needle pricks, nausea, vomiting, a loss of strength and hair that falls out,” a CHOA representative told The Huffington Post. “To mark the closing of a difficult chapter in their lives, our courageous cancer warriors have the opportunity to ring the bell and celebrate this hard-fought milestone.”

So powerful.

Pat McCrory’s Staff Plants Softball Questions For Governor At Event

Taylor Batten, the editorial page editor for The Charlotte Observer, wanted to ask North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) a question at an event Thursday. But when he tried to do so, he was told that there were already three questions in the queue from his outlet, so he was out of luck.

Ends up those questions weren’t from The Charlotte Observer at all. They were questions planted by McCrory’s own staff. Batten said speakers at the Hood Hargett Breakfast Club regularly take questions from the audience, but this time, McCrory would take only written questions submitted in advance.

More from his column:

Ricky Diaz, a campaign spokesman, on Friday acknowledged the campaign provided questions for the governor, but said “we were asked to in order to keep the conversation format going.”

Jenn Snyder, executive director of the Hood Hargett Breakfast Club, said that’s not true. She said she had expected the governor to take live questions from the audience but the campaign insisted on this other format and wanted to include questions of their own along with ones from the audience. All the questions were portrayed as coming from the audience and the Observer, and the crowd was never told that many of them actually came from McCrory’s campaign.

The questions planted by the staff were about what the governor wants to do in his next term, how he will reduce the rape kit backlog in the state and how North Carolina’s crime lab performed under his Democratic opponent, Roy Cooper, the state’s attorney general.

Batten wanted to ask McCrory about the controversial law known as HB2, which bars cities and localities from enacting anti-discrimination policies that protect people on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. It became known as the “bathroom bill” because it also prevents schools from allowing transgender students to use the restroom that correspondents with their gender identity, rather than the gender assigned to them at birth.

Since its passage this spring, the state ― and McCrory ― have suffered intense backlash. PayPal scrapped plans to expand its business to Charlotte, resulting in a loss of 400 jobs for the city and state. Various musicians and entertainers canceled planned concerts

Last week, the NCAA announced it would withdraw all its championship events from the state for the 2016-17 academic year because of HB2.

“Fairness is about more than the opportunity to participate in college sports, or even compete for championships,” NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a statement. “We believe in providing a safe and respectful environment at our events and are committed to providing the best experience possible for college athletes, fans and everyone taking part in our championships.”

McCrory ended up calling Batten shortly after the event, and the journalist was able to ask him about HB2. McCrory said he believes it’s Congress’ job to pass protections for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. But when Batten asked him if that meant he believes those rights should be in place, McCrory replied, “I wish the federal government would have this discussion.”

There currently is a bill in Congress called the Equality Act, which would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of already protected classes (race, color, sex, religion and national origin). It hasn’t gone anywhere in the GOP-controlled Congress.

McCrory is running for re-election against Cooper. Polls show a tight race, with Cooper slightly ahead.

Stephen Burlingham Going Beyond Art for Youth with Cancer

Cancer. The word that terrifies us, at any age. But when a young person is struck by it, it seems all the more tragic. To help cope with this harsh reality, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who joined together to form WHO Cares and created The Lounge at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). This is a place that allows teenagers to feel like teenagers and immerse in an atmosphere far unlike a hospital’s (program).

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Teen and Young Adult (TYA@MSK) Program offers special services to MSK’s teen and young adult population.

The Lounge is a space designed especially for this unique age group that was made possible by a $ 1 million donation from Teen Cancer America. The nonprofit organization, co-founded by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, partners with hospitals throughout the U.S. to develop specialized facilities for teens and young adults with cancer.

Inspired to go beyond art to create a space for healing, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center turned to a new friend of mine, the extraordinary thinker and doer Stephen Burlingham. Stephen, speaking to our foundation’s young global leaders this summer, explained his recent piece “Whisper” featured in the MSK Lounge for Teens and Young Adults:

I wanted to go beyond art. “Whisper,” for me, is hope for the patients, the family and friends of children living with cancer. My work springs directly from envisioning humanity’s cumulative knowledge and belief encapsulated within an ever-expanding membrane that emanates from the Elements themselves.

My work stands for the universal Membrane and involves my search to find the spiritual, the mindful passage, to allow one to break through our restrains and to see what lies beyond our sensory world. To perceive the Intangible – that which is unable to be touched or grasped, that lacks a physical presence.

Stephen is no stranger when it comes with working with children in needs. The grand-grandson of the renowned designer Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stephen was commissioned for designing the award for the Save the Children’s 75th Anniversary Benefit in 2007. Three visionary leaders were honored at that benefit with Save the Children’s Global Humanitarian Awards — former President George H. W. Bush, former President Bill Clinton, and Melinda Gates.

Unlike any other artist I have met, Stephen is charismatic, spiritual, intelligent – and deeply philosophical. If you didn’t know he was an artist, you might think he is a humanitarian.

One of his works, a permanent stone sculpture entitled “The Crossing,” was erected in the ancient port of Bodrum, Turkey, on the Mediterranean. He told me the piece now bears witness to the eternal laws that are constant over time, language and culture – and the great civilizations which unite humanity.

Another of his work in progress, “The Gateway,” is an installation project that explores the frontier between the tangible and the intangible. “Traversing this universal Membrane is at the core of my work,’ he said, “and the search to find the spiritual, the mindful passage, to allow one to break through our restraints and see what lies beyond our sensory world. To perceive the Intangible.”

Cancer can sometimes feel like that, intangible and out of one’s grasp. The artist speaks of his piece as a way to “look through and beyond.” I took this as a nod to those battling cancer. The Lounge at MSK provides an escape for teenagers who want to be able to live their lives as if they are somewhere else other than a hospital.

“I believe it is up to each patient and family member to choose to see and to take from your piece what you intended to offer them,” Stephen told us.

His work “Whisper,” I believe, is aptly named. Whisper surround hospitals. In Stephen’s whispers, we see something else – a different way to speak up. Among the whispers are the intangible possibility that things can get better, and that people may truly heal.

Meera Gandhi, an activist and CEO of The Giving Back Foundation, is a good friend of us both. Meera helped me gain some insight into Stephen’s life and work:

When I walked into Sloan Kettering and got to the lounge, the yellow art piece “Whisper” by Stephen Burlingham reminded me of the sun. I assumed Stephen was thinking of sunlight and energy to heal when he designed that.

The Lounge has great energy and is so comfortable and has the guitar from The Who hanging on the wall. Stephen shared that he had such joy creating the piece and hoped many teens would be healed of cancer and enjoy great downtime in the relaxed lounge created at MSK.

Meera received our foundation’s Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2015.

Jeremy Hu, gallerist and global adviser to our foundation, agrees:

When you step into The Lounge at Sloan Kettering, the first thing you notice is the vibrancy of Stephen’s work brightening up the walls, signaling a hopeful tomorrow, one that is cancer-free. There is such peace in Burlingham’s pieces. The main element blends seamlessly with the world around it. It lifts you up.

A challenge we have as a foundation and young global leadership program is to try to relate to our readers the breadth and scope of those thought leaders and global citizens whom we meet during the course of our activities. Stephen Burlingham is perhaps the most intellectually engaging and challenging individual we have encountered. One piece on his hospital installation does not begin to unravel his myriad mysteries.

With this in mind, we have determined to create a series about his artistic achievements. Stephen’s world revolves around CoAu – the iconic markers of the paradigm shift of Humanity’s Consciousness, The Gateway, the physical portal of the new consciousness, and 0M1.org, a community forming around this new consciousness.

As we sat around our dining table, we discussed with Stephen his vision. In short, the artist sees three current parts: Joining the idea/vision, a shared curiosity in Humanity’s future and the cosmos; Collaborating in the realization of the Gateway; and Bringing together thought leaders and interested parties (people, universities, think tanks, etc.). Our young team seemed anxiously eager to absorb his ideas.

A creative life force such as Stephen Burlingham is difficult to encapsulate and even harder to pigeonhole. Young patients living with cancer who find themselves in The Lounge at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center don’t care – they simply find enormous comfort in his piece “Whisper.”

Our foundation is actively discussing how best we might engage him in the future. Should he be Artist-in-Residence, Humanitarian of the Year, or simply honorary chair of our Global Advisory Board? Whatever role he may one day assume with us, it is clear that Stephen Burlingham is going to change the world.

The Art of Mindful Baking: Returning the Heart to the Hearth

The Art of Mindful Baking: Returning the Heart to the Hearth

The Art of Mindful Baking is a delightful insight into how the act of baking is, by its very nature, a practical meditation that provides a wealth of physical, mental and social benefits. Julia Ponsonby (author of the best-selling Gaia’s Kitchen, Green Books) looks at what it means to use our hands and how kneading promotes wellbeing. This book explores the true and enduring value of eating real food – from the mental focus instilled when judging proportions and cooking time, through to the sense of accomplishment felt when taking the finished bake from the oven and sharing amongst friends. Eighteen delicious recipes are woven into the text, each with a story of their own; simple spelt bread, brown rolls and scones lead the reader onto more complex bakes, such as stollen, sourdough and soufflé. By the end of the book, you’ll feel reconnected with one of life’s most basic, sustaining elements.

The Writing Life: Hugs, Peace, and Pray

Some of my media friends in the United States are saying that they will now listen more carefully to what Donald J. Trump on the US Presidential campaign trail. Really? Why this sudden conversion on the “Road to Damascus”? (“Road to Damascus,” according to Wikipedia, refers to a sudden turning point in one’s life. It’s in reference to the conversion to Christianity of the apostle Paul while literally on the road to Damascus from Jerusalem. Prior to that moment, he had been called Saul, and was a Pharisee who persecuted followers of Jesus.)

My view is that, with a few exceptions, it’s unlikely the US media will extensively scrutinize The Donald. He’s been around a long time, and he’s gotten away with lies, more lies and still more lies. Scarcely any challenges for him in the media; challenges involve digging and a significant amount of insolence directed at political targets who, like Mr. Trump, are used to media antics. If he can’t bully media types, then he buys them with flattery

Meanwhile, Hillary Rodham Clinton – self-inflicted wounds, stumbles and all – continues as the Cruella de Vil (a slimy character who kidnaps puppies for their furs in “The Hundred and One Dalmatians,” the 1956 novel by Dodie Smith).

After all, many — if not most — media persons and pollsters seem convinced that he will be the next American president. So why antagonize him? After all, there will be lots of communications jobs to be handed out in a Trump Administration, no?

I hope I’m wrong. I hope The Donald is called out for what he is – an inveterate charlatan posing as a “savior” of America. Savior? Oh my!

My good friend Alexis White, as shrewd a political observer as any, emails me the following from Mexico: “Is the media thinking that the Fourth Estate will be treated with respect and a laissez faire hand in a Trump presidency? He taunts, he scams, and he uses the media — as he did yesterday with his hotel promo-disguised-as-a-news-conference/announcement. And then (!) he tweets (go read) that he scammed them.

“What will happen to the media, (be it print, online or broadcast) that we respect? Ivanka [Trump] walked out (“Apologies, but I have to run”) on Cosmopolitan when Cosmo asked some normal questions (not gotcha ones) about her father’s childcare policy/plan for which she was the spokesperson and ostensibly the crafter. Cosmo? She tells them that she expected them to be kind. They were, but this was not a photo shoot. So Ivanka left and her dad stood behind her decision. (And we all know about dad and WaPo and the rest of his growing laundry list of media non grata.)

“The point is that I truly believe the Fourth Estate, (those entities and persons we respect for their journalism, their integrity), better wake up to the reality that once he is in (God forbid) all bets are off. He is in charge. And with the getting-motlier-by-the-day band of inner circle members — many of whom have for decades been Swiftboating and Paula Jones promoting (Kelleyanne Conway’s husband, George T. Conway III, in the latter group) and positively lying and trolling even before Yelp et al were created – well there are many ways to get at your enemies and unravel that freedom of the press tenet.

“J. Edgar Hoover may be dead, but Trump can take his lead from some of his favorite foreign strongmen about how to deal with media and media types who don’t fawn.”

Hoover, who was named Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation when he was only 29 years old by then President Calvin Coolidge in 1924, maintained incriminating dossiers on those media types, and politicians he didn’t like. Few dared to defy him for alleged blackmail of suspected Communists and sexual deviants, according to Curt Gentry’s scathing biography, “J. Edgar Hoover: The Man and The Secrets.” It was whispered that Hoover, a lifelong bachelor, engaged in peculiar deviancies of his own: these did not involve women.

The Donald need not necessarily open his history books – that is, if he possesses any – to learn from Hoover.

(There’s a joke that made the rounds when Ronald Reagan was president: A radio bulletin broke into regular programming to say that Reagan’s library at his Santa Barbara, California, ranch had burned down: “Both books were destroyed, but the president had had time to color only one of them.” Perish the thought that a fire would consume The Donald’s library at his home-cum-headquarters in the 68-floor Trump Tower on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue – although he might not be that distraught if his copies of GQ Magazine, whose British edition carried nude pictures of Slovenia-born Melania Knauss some 15 years ago; Melania and The Donald were wed in 2005 in what his third marriage.)

More contemporaneously than J. Edgar Hoover, The Donald can emulate a man he openly admires, President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin of Russia. The Putin modus operandi is really very simple: Opponents in business and politics are issued one-way tickets to pecuniary oblivion and/or premature obituaries.

But this is America, you may protest. Of course it is. Just ask Jimmy Hoffa, the head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. That is, if you can locate him.

He reputedly had strong links to organized crime. One humid day in July 1975, after dining at the Machus Red Fox restaurant in suburban Detroit, he walked out and was never seen again. His body was never found, and in the books of the FBI the case still remains open.

I’m not suggesting that The Donald, once elected 45th President of the United States on November 8, will act thuggish. But he can, if he wants to. After all, who’s going to challenge him? The American media?

What All Frustrated Managers Need To Hear

Before LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner became such a vocal proponent of “compassionate management,” he once sat in a series of fateful meetings where an uncomfortable scene would play out. It’s a scenario many workers will recognize: a manager expresses his or her staffing frustrations by undermining the employee in question and making passive-aggressive comments at the employee’s expense.

Sharing his story with Oprah about one such meeting, Weiner says that the frustrations of this particular manager were getting to him ― and, likely, the entire team. So, knowing how damaging the situation could be for morale, Weiner took the opportunity to speak with the manager privately.

“We would have one-on-ones every now and again, and I said, ‘Hey, I’ve got to give you some feedback,’” Weiner says. “I said, ‘The next time you feel like making a joke at this person’s expense or you get frustrated and let them know in front of all of us, you should go find a mirror and express that frustration to yourself. Because you’re the reason they’re in the role.’”

What Weiner then suggested to the manager is something that anyone in charge of a staff could benefit from keeping in mind.

“If you don’t like the way they’re doing the job, take the time to coach them. If they’re not capable of doing the job the way you believe they should be able to do the job, find another role for them. And if that’s not going to work out, then transition them, and do it in a way that’s compassionate and constructive,” he says.

After that talk, the manager ended up thanking Weiner, whose advice had helped tremendously. That’s when Weiner had an epiphany of his own.

“I realized I was doing the exact same thing to someone on my team,” Weiner admits. “The exact same thing.”

In that moment, the executive made himself a promise that has led to his deep devotion to compassionate management.

“I kind of vowed that for as long as I was going to be responsible for managing other people, I was going to aspire to manage compassionately, where I wasn’t necessarily trying to have them do things the way I did them,” he says. “I was putting myself in their shoes, understanding what motivated them ― their hopes, their dreams, their fears ― and try to lead as effectively as possible.”

Jeff Weiner’s full interview airs this weekend’s “SuperSoul Sunday,” Sept. 18, at 11 a.m. ET on OWN. You can also watch the most recent full episodes for a limited time on SuperSoul.tv, or catch up on past full episodes on demand via the Watch OWN app.

Teacher’s Guide To Coping With Stress Is The Reading We All Need

All students literally everyone could use a list like this.

Alina Ramirez, a high school senior in Oxnard, California, tweeted a photo showing a list of “101 ways to cope with stress” on Sept 2., writing that her psychology teacher handed out the guide to his class.

It includes specific tips like getting up 15 minutes earlier, saying something nice to someone and petting “a friendly dog/cat,” as well as broader advice like “know your limitations and let others know them, too.”

The teacher, Brett Phillips, told BuzzFeed he’s been handing out the list for the past 10 years.

“I give students the list and then I have them pick five things that they need to start doing to lower their stress levels,” he said.

Since Ramirez posted the list online, its advice is reaching people far beyond Phillips’ classroom. As of Saturday afternoon it had more than 22,000 retweets and an extensive collection of replies thanking her for sharing it.

While not every tip on the list is going to help everyone (some of us are definitely not going to be getting up any earlier) there’s likely at least one or two things on the list that any person could find helpful. And a lot of them have some real basis in science. Interacting with pets, having plants around and even just smiling are all acts that have demonstrated stress-lowering powers.

Now get out there and pet a cat!
